Power Feed Shaft Repair

In my last video I replaced the nylon gear in my Align AL200S milling machine power feed. Thankfully, my viewers pointed out that the wobbly gear wasn't normal. So in this video I show you how I fixed the problem.

I was hoping you would fix that. Nice calibrated hammer hits! That runout is probably why the previous gear failed. I have a similar version of this power feed but it drives a bevel gear on a regular milling machine. So the motor stands vertically instead of horizontal. This version is for a low headroom, so it hangs off the table horizontally. That whole shaft is a disengage clutch to the final gear. I installed three of these on my mill. Also one on my drill press, which can't drive the quill feed gear without a gear box, as one revolution is 4 inches of quill travel so it needs more torque to operate as a power feed while drilling. I got a 10:1 gear box for stepper motors to make that work. Also installed one on my 10x24 lathe tailstock which is slick for nice power feed drilling. That smooth feed prevents drill breakage. And I can put a pretty large drill in that won't grab with a constant slow feed, that my hands can't do as well.

@@LetsRogerThat The tailstock power feed is extremely handy, the drill press, not so much, but the 10:1 gear box on it is very handy, as I made a 6" crank to enable the manual drill press down feed. The lathe tailstock, I made a longer quill bolt on to the rear of the tail stock, and a longer quill for deep drilling, as the original had only a 3 inch travel. I also machined the new quill to hold a MT#2 tang, as part of fixing spinning tools. The error on my part that precipitated all this was I was trying to hold something between centers, this was just a bit longer then 24", and the tail stock fell off to the floor and bent the crank handle. My eyes were on the headstock taper. This is a Jet brand lathe, and there was no provision of a tail stock travel limit, so off the end it went.

That shaft is very soft. Next time you need to take that gear off, use two screwdrivers 180° apart. Given that the gear didn't break when you used only 1, a puller grabbing the outside at 2 or 3 points should work too - provided that you can get one whose legs open wide enough.

Gilles, that's much better than it was. It had to have been either damaged at the factory or a previous purchaser messed it up and returned it where it was then sold to you as new.

You might want to invest in a soft blow or brass hammer or soft jaws for your vise. Ball pein hammers and round shafts really don't like each other.
