Rita's robot form was explained, Billy was trying to resurrect Zordon but instead the particles from his energy tube that he died from that had Rita's body, were scattered across the lab destroying Alpha and then it turned him into Rita.

Robot Rita was explained, even though the person was purified by the Z wave the evil Rita particles were spread across the universe so in Billy search for zordons waves he accidentally retrived Rita's waves which she then took over alpha 8 attacks Billy, which leads to the first scene when Billy is fighting her and Trini dies. Which is why Ming blamed Billy for Trini's death

People already said it but they really explained that she why Rita's was back, maybe it was a bit odd but we have the explanation from it clearly when Billy was trying to reach out Zordon... I honestly absolutely loved, 9/10. Trini's daughter was a cool character and she had some development on it and that was nice. David Yost and Walter Jones absolutely did it amazing, they're the core of the special and loved entirely that they have the center role. Kat and Rocky did it good. So damn good all the callbacks (Billy saying is like a second nature, Rocky joking with Alpha to make him short circuit as Kimberly did on the first ep, the Shellshock mention on the end, etc). I liked when Kat mentioned her son with Tommy (i don't know if he was from the comics or something but was nice) I bet all of this was recorded before of JDF death and that's why it was way more centered on Thuy Trang homage (not complaining, just describing) Dude... I couldn't hold the tears on the end... They used a great scene to remember Thuy and JDF, RIP to them 🥺🥺🥺. And point out to the remade MMPR opening, that was amazing as heaven (although they used Turbo footage for Kat XD)

yes tommy and JJ is a comics character who eventually becomes a power ranger now i dont know if he joins the SPD Rangers but it looks simular to their ranger costumes and he did appear once in the MMPR series in season 3 during a christmas episode tommy and kat were old and JJ walked in they didnt show his face and then he left after his watch beep like theres did in the first 5 seasons please let me know what you think

@Will N i love thuy trang and i like that they focus on her because besides the episode of power rangers time force circuit unsure and the in memory of thuy trang at the end of the episode we didnt really honored her since her car accident in september 2001 but i just think since i am a big JDF fan to have his daughter jenna take the mantle for the final fight would have been awesome its just my opinion but i really loved the special though

I’m honestly happy they used archival audio when Tommy and Kimberly were fighting because otherwise it would’ve sounded weird like the transition period from Jason, Zack, and Trini to Rocky, Adam, and Aisha in season 2. That being said, it didn’t sound like they did the same for Jason which was weird

The one thing I wonder is if you listen closely while they are fighting it's not jdf or Austin St John's archival voices. They are different. Kim and Trini were all the way but when it comes to just the fighting it isn't. The morphs were I just wonder why they didn't use the other.

Speaking of that though it would’ve been fun for them to do the whole “oh the charachters totally here their just in this other area” shenanigans that saban pulled during that time just as a fun joke the halloween episode will always be the modt hillarious to me. I like the fact that they actually used their original weapons. It was a little bit more gritty than the original. Characters were disintegrated, blasted and stabbed without all of the sparks and instead of saying "destroys" they actually say "kill". I'm hoping this is what they're talkin about doing with cosmic fury. 👍

I really thought I ran out of tears for JDF and Thuy… until the end of this special. Aside from that, they made a few references to JJ, Tommy Oliver’s son, which I really liked. I hope we get an actor for him at some point. I was also really surprised how they didn’t shy away from the concept of death. They used words like’killed’ and ‘dead’. I like it, they understood who the audience was going to be and stepped it up a bit.

I loved that they used a cold open: first shot is Billy on the ground, mid-fight. Straight to business. Loved it. 30 seconds in, and the six rangers all running straight to the camera, huge explosions in the background, blasting the sickest guitar riff of the 90s, and the MMPR logo comes in. It's as if the creators said "We know you've been waiting for this for 30 years. We're not gonna make you wait any longer." I absolutely loved this. There were a couple issues, sure, but it was overall a great special and you could tell that everyone involved actually *cared* about what they were doing.

Billy was pretty bad ass in this special. They did a great job keeping the same feel of the original series, but making it more mature. Truth be told Robo Rita was pretty great. Way more deadly than her flesh and blood predecessor. Both Zack and Billy gave the best acting. It would have been great if all of the original MMPR cast was able to return for this but what we got was great, and story line wise, it was great to see Black and Blue shine the most.

She has some fighting skills. Imo I didn't like Robo Rita; she looks so goofy as a robot. I would've been more satisfied if the Netflix special had a live action version of Lord Drakkon as the big bad villain as well as his army of ranger sentries.

This was awesome!! Seeing the Black and Blue ranger get the spotlight on them was a long time coming. And the tributes to the Yellow and Green ranger were amazing. I honestly love seeing that last clip of all the Original Rangers together. I hope one day they can get the Original Rangers together on the big or little screen but now minus David Frank unfortunately for us fans. I heard someone say maybe his daughter would like to play the New Green Ranger, and I thought that would be Amazing!

The Rita that appeared in this episode wasn't the Good!Rita who was purified in In Space -- she was the evil energies that got expunged from her by the Z-Wave, reconstructed when Billy tried to resurrect Zordon, which then possessed Alpha 8 to become Robo Rita. Presumably, the Mystic Mother is still out there somewhere doing Good. (Similar to Lord Zedd in PRDF -- not the purified Zedd, but a reconstruction of his most Evil self.)

Just watched it with my 2-year-old son. It's something special that I get to share this with him. A couple of things stood out to me. One was the use of the word kill or killed. As they never used those words or mention death in the cartoons. The other thing that stood out was when Billy stabbed Rita. Showing Rita being stabbed through me off and then Rocky finishing off the furry monster. They even said that was a little hardcore. They understood that their audience is much older now and can handle this. Wish we could have gotta Bulk and Skull or other power ranger characters. I like the call back to the other Rangers.

I was so giddy with excitement with the remade classic morphing sequence. The Robo was explained. Billy was trying to bring zordon back but accidentally gathered Rita's energy and her energy took over alphas 8 body

I have to say. Every time the original Power Rangers made appearances in later shows, they always had Adam return as the Black Ranger and Jason as the Red Ranger. It was really good to see Zack back in Black, and Rocky rocking Red again. And also for the first time, Kat actually got to call out "Pterodactyl," instead of "Pink Ranger Power."

Other positives: -The characters retaining their personalities, along with developing them - Minh's hero's journey - The Rangers getting a decent amount of time to shine, which I feel was long overdue - the little touches of Trini's home. I kind of laughed at all the yellow that was in there. - The winks and nods and Easter eggs. My favorite positive was them using archived audio clips for Ranger actors who couldn't show, Trini included. This movie did a better job at using Trini's old audio clips than the show did In the episodes leading to the first cast departure.

However, when Zordon did this it also dispersed the evil energy of all the purified villains. When Billy fought he found Zordon it was actually Evil Ritas Spirit. Rita's spirit possessed Alpha 8 and turned into Robo Rita. Ngl not sure how you missed such an important scene but it happens.

Not sure how you missed the flashback. Know how when you “purify” something, the bad stuff doesn’t go away, it’s just removed. That’s what the Z Wave did. The bad part of Rita was washed away. When Billy tried to reconstitute Zordon from the remnants of the Z Wave, that part of Rita was reconstituted. It just happened to come across a suitable body, toon Alpha 8 and molded it into what you see.

In the flashback Billy was trying to find traces of Zordons (z-wave energy) to revive him. But there was traces of all the evil ( i think all) that was purged during countdown to destruction not just Rita. How I understand it. Reta and Zedds beings were slit the good we saw and the evil sweeped away. The evil side of Rita was revived by mistake. Taking over Alpha 8 and reshaping it to look more like her.

I think people aren't understanding Once and Always was a last-minute thing so of course it wasn't going to feel a bit rushed and not have much as people wanted like cameos and absolutely perfect CGI. Personally I thought the CGI was fine for what this was.

I enjoyed it! The only thing I think they really dropped the ball with was the final blow to RoboRita. Instead of Zack shooting her, They all should have combined their weapons and did the iconic team blast to defeat her.

Similar to what a lot of people have already echoed, how RoboRita was created was addressed in the Billy flashback scene. When the Z-Wave dispersed throughout the galaxy wiping evil and purifying Zed & Rita, the evil from them was interspersed with the Z-Wave which was floating on an atomic level in the universe. Billy's project/machine which was trying to collect the Z-Wave particles to bring back Zordon, also gathered the evil particles which then took over Alpha-8's body (the rest of the movie is Alpha-9), and upon fusing, assumed the form of RoboRita. Other than that, good review, enjoyed a lot of it!

It was awesome! Felt like an extended episode from start to finish. I cried when when it showed the gravestone of Trini and the memorial in the home. The mentions of Kim and Jason was a nice touch, and JJ as well. Overall, it was a great special and hopefully there are more like this in the future.

The robot part is from alpha 8. Rita took control of alpha's body and morphed it into her image. She literally went inside of alpha 8 and just transformed right on screen.

Rita coming back was addressed. She told Billy that when she was purified, he negative energy went elsewhere. Just like Zordon’s positive energy did. It’s all there in the Morphin Grid. This special gave me Flash vibes. The Morphin Grid is similar to the Speed Force.

I thought that this was an alright 30th anniversary power ranger special, but it had its problems, particularly the CGI zords, the zord battle, and the morphing sequence looked like it was on a fan film budget. Not to mention that some of these power rangers got captured too easily by robo Rita. Speaking of Rita, the special explained how Robo Rita came to be. This special also did a good memorial for Jason David Frank and Trini's actress.

If I recall it was mentioned at some point that the original desire was to make this a multiparty miniseries. I think the bits that seem like they are missing can be attributed to the company's choice to make it a 1 hour special instead. The inclusion of more rangers could have been spread across several episodes as we see bounce around watching robo Rita take out those crews and the MMPR showing up either too late or in time to help the remaining rangers drive back the robo monsters

Only one issue I had with it which I understand the did their best at. they got rid of Jason, tommy, Kimberley during the entire film for obvious reasons, but still...having the green ranger in it at the beginning and not hearing him run his mouth was very strange. Oh!! ALSO, Billy being this super genius but doesn't think to warn all the other rangers around the world about the powers of that snake bot was a massive plot hole. You know, seing as Rita's plan entirely depended on capturing rangers lol. Also, they did explain how Rita came back, it's not Rita lol, it's her evil essence, good Rita still exists.

Why Rita was back was like a huge plot point of the movie. The Evil that was expelled during the Z wave was recollected while Billy was looking for Zordon, that evil went into Alpha 8. Evil Rita + Robot = RoboRita.

I basically thought the same thing: I really wish we'd have gotten to see a few other Rangers like right there at the end when they freed the ones Rita had captured. I get that it's the MMPR special, but it would have been awesome to see the Dino Thunder Rangers interact with Kat since they were so close with Tommy, too. Or the In Space Rangers, since we saw Ashley and Carlos among the captured ones. It was only an hour long, they could have easily added in another 15-30 minutes and kept the special a manageable length. I believe Rita being back was addressed. Billy & Alpha were trying to see if they could find Zordon or some remnants of his energy. They discovered a powerful source. Unfortunately, it was the evil that was banished from Rita. Ill need to rewatch it, but i believe Rita says the evil in her wasn't destroyed but purged from her body. So the energy they Billy and Alpha detected was Rita's evil and it inhabited Alpha 8 and turned into Metal Rita

Sooooo Rita’s robot form was explained. After the purification her evil energy was sent into the deep trenches of space or time wherever they were hunting for Zordon. She then frees herself through that portal/time warp and uses Alpha 8’s body as a host to then change herself into a robot. The JDF voice I thought was good as they didn’t try to pass on his powers you clearly know he’s still around but they don’t try to pass the mantle on. Minh was sensational can’t wait to see what the future holds 😊

It was explained. When the Z-wave that purified her washed over the universe, it stripped Rita’s dark energy and sent it into the universe. Billy was hunting for similar energy, in the form of Zordon. He mistakenly assumed the energy he had found was Zordon, but it was Rita’s dark energy - and it used Alpha 8 to retake a physical form. You obviously didn’t pay attention as well as you think you did. It’s not “Rita,” bc as you said, she was helping Mystic Force rangers. It was her dark energy subverting the body of Alpha 8, sorta like how Ivan Ooze used the body of his ectomorphicon to become part machine. Not even 2 minutes in and I’m not finishing it.

I loved the CGI of the morphs. How the blue hue and static just envelopes them into their Ranger form. Very cool look. The Zord CGI was great in some instances and not so great in others. Overall I was happy. Walter did an amazing job being a surrogate father. Zack, Billy and Minh really were the emotional heart of this special. The Trini tribute really touched me with those flashbacks. Thuy Trang was so beautiful. I would have liked to have seen a bit more pain & regret exhibited from Billy. Trini was probably his closest friend who understood him most and could match his intelligence. Even Zack couldn’t understand what he was saying half the time 😂. I think if there was at least 30 mins added to the show, I think they could of given even more dramatic and emotional weight to the characters through more scenes giving further back story. I really hope this special does well so Netflix and Hasbro can greenlight a whole series with the MMPR original cast.

I'm glad they didn't try to re shoot anything since jdf passed after they finished filming. For me, I'd rather see him get a real tribute episode or something down the line rather than having them tack something on here. The old clip at the end was a nice touch and it didn't compromise the special as a whole.

I gave it a solid 7 out of 10 , the acting felt off in the 1st half of the special but got better as i watched. You could tell a lot these actors haven't worked in a while. Tommy , Kimberly and Jason getting captured so easily was also hard for me to believe , i felt they could have done that better. Especially for Tommy considering his battle experience as multiple rangers at this point , Also them rarely having lines felt off and out of character. Netflix should have definitely hired some voice actors for a few lines just to not have them be mute. However I do think this special was a good set up for a Netflix exclusive series with the OG cast if they ever decided to do that.

*SPOILER WARNING* From what I understand of the whole “why is Rita evil again” situation, it is somewhat explained in the scene explaining why Zordons tube is cracked. It seemed to be that the aspect of Rita that came through the crack was the evil part of Rita that had been separated from her andsomehow survived the purge. With the robot body being because she took control of the Alpha unit in the base at the time and altered it to a more familiar form to her old one.

You are correct. To elaborate, when Rita was purified by the Zordon Wave the evil in her soul didn't just cease to exist, it was separated from her and scattered. Billy and Alpha 8 caused this evil to coalesce which allowed it to take over Alpha 8.

My 4 year old woke me up this morning with this playing on his phone. I thought I was dreaming it at first. I had forgotten they were doing something for the 30th, i thought it was just a documentary. I watched it tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was very nicely done and it was good to see focus on Billy and Zach. Trini and Billy always had a unique, close friendship in the original show and it was good to see them show that throughout. It was funny they made a few references to Zach being a former congressman. I honestly think Billy should be the new Zordon. He's created so many workarounds through the Morphing Grid, rebuilt the Zords and various Alpha units.

Nice review but, Robo Rita’s origins was explained through a flashback. Zordon’s energy wave purified Rita but scattered her evil essence. Billy was trying to revive Zordon but Rita’s essence possessed alpha 5’s body. That is how she became robo Rita. Billy’s time on aquatar was briefly explained. Minh’s looking into Trinies memories was a real tear jerker. I loved how we saw the growth of Billy and Zach. Great review for a good movie.
