Thank you! Heads up before you do this on your own everyone: Paul mentions this and if you watch the edits you can see some changes in the video. You CAN NOT remove the PS pump from under the battery box... unless your cylinder head is off. It does give you some more clearance to reach the banjo fitting, and it makes it safer. But the pump will need to come out the passenger side wheel well. Another note- you can wiggle the pump out without dropping the crossmember. I had to remove the passenger tie rod to get enough room, but that is far easier than the crossmember per the Toyota manual.

Just did this job. A few things - Thank you for the guide. Very helpful! - This is a huge pain in the butt to do. - Best way to remove that I found is steer all the way to the right, then disconnect the outer tie rod. You'll have enough room to remove with wheel and low pressure hose attached. - It will be messy. Get a catch pan underneath. - Small hands required.

For those who want to do this without taking the head off the motor, if you remove the motor mount on the passenger side you can raise the motor up all the way and create a big enough of a hole to slide the pump out underneath but you will have to get the pulley off first. Just did it and was not fun but doable. Didn't want to take the head off just for a power steering pump :P

Really a big shout out and nany thanks again for your video efforts. Your videos, have been well received and extremely helpful to me, as I had to let the RAV sit for a month, before putting it together. I did everything exact in this video. Plugged the lines I was supposed to, and I'm pretty sure everything was installed correctly. I even went to your fluids video to see how you did the power steering change. No matter what I do I still have no power steering and it's stiff as can be. I've been turning this wheel all night.

Still waiting for my mountain wrench. Managed to complete the belt change anyway. Didn’t remove anything, not even the wheel. Do I recommend it? Hell no. I busted almost every knuckle on my left hand and still have to go back and add tension again once I go drive it. Thank you lord Paul for your help, you are my champion of rav4 repairs. In my case of squeal I think the belt might have had too much tension, the screech could have been the ps shaft(?)crying for help. No leaks but the pump itself might be on its last legs. It also wasn’t wobbling like crazy at idle, maybe that’s good? Time to drive after I cool off

The belts are almost impossible without the mountain wrench. Congratulations on getting it done. The best way to test pulleys is with the belt off. With the belt off and engine off turn the power steering pulley by hand. It should be smooth with no grinding.

@@LabCoatPaul it spins smoothly. Didn’t feel any grinding. Pretty hard to tension the belt. After retentioning just now, it chirps and squeals a bit at full steer and I can feel a bit of shuddering or struggle toward the max steer, like it’s not smooth. Just because I haven’t changed the fluid yet I’m gonna do that today as well.

@@bendavis8090 I think attacking it by removing drivers side wheel well and snaking it out is the best way. It is a pain but after you do it once, you'll know how to rotate it on exit and entry. I still have mine out because I found a second leak (one leak was at the seal (common), the second was at the return line into the rack (rusted).

@@MrButtonMonkey yeah you're right. I dropped the crossmember because I was replacing the poorly designed engine mount in that area while I did the rack and pinion. Yes you CAN for sure get the rack and pinion out without dropping the crossmember.. Lots of angles, busted fingers, and curse words. What was surprisingly hard for me was not getting the rack out, but getting the intermediate shaft back into place correctly once back in.

Paul, instead of draining the reservoir, as I have seen on several power steering pump videos, can I just disconnect the lowest hose that connects to the power steering pump, and let the fluid drain into a pan? My car is a 2004 Corolla, and the power steering pump is at the bottom of the engine. Thank you for the video! I admire the careful, methodical way you work. 🚙 😃 You fixed the power steering pump, but something else is still leaking. What do you think it is?

On the steering pump belt, Is it possible to remove that 3rd bolt with a regular 14mm wrench? Or do we need that mountain double box wrench for the job? Do you remember how you done it?

Watch the video at 3:08 Plug the big hose on the throttle body, and the 1/4" fitting on the right side of the intake manifold. You only need 2 plugs.

The O-ring came with the new power steering pump. I don't know what size it is. Hi Paul. The 5/8 hose you placed at the power steering cup to the steering pump didn't leak? Mine was recently replaced and mechanic placed it with a kink for the hose don't have the same shape as the original. Now the 5/8 hose has some steering fluid, but no leak where the cup and hose are connected. Could the replacement hose has some tiny holes already due to the kink? I thinking o just replacing like that of the 5/8 hose you used. Thanks for the tip.

Just make the hose a bit longer and bend the metal a little like I did so you don't get a kink. It's at 5:32 in the video.

Hi, just one question, how did you connect both air hoses to the steel pipe, the one from the California emissions and the Iddle valve? I need to do exactly the same

I did not connect them. I replaced my cylinder head with a federal emissions head so it didn't have the port in between the injectors, and I deleted the power steering idle up. I plugged both ports on the throttle body. You can see it at 23:01 in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaTZamuAq6ekjtU

I have a 99 , when I press the brakes , they're hard , car idles down , and then turns off, could it be the brake booster?, it just installed a new torque converter, so I know it's not that anymore

Yes, it sounds like you might have a brake booster problem. Try disconnecting the big vacuum hose from the booster and plugging it. If your idle is better, the booster may be leaking. You can also try applying vacuum to the booster. If it doesn't hold a vacuum, it needs to be replaced. Also, just check the vacuum hoses on the engine.

In hindsight was a new pump a better decision then just getting a seal kit and rebuilding yours

The pump I used still works fine and it was a lot less work. A remanufactured pump if done correctly could be better quality than a new Chinese pump, because it would have been an Aisin part that was rebuilt by someone in a factory. I've had many problems with Autozone parts so I would probably recommend buying your parts from Toyota, or buying the rebuild kit and fixing the old pump.

QUESTION? Regarding removal of the (Idle air hoses). HOW DO I KNOW what head I have? Federal emmissions ?? I have a Calif 1998 Rav4... It would be nice to clean up engine bay. SO BASICALLY. 1.) Can I remove this system? on a Calif Rav-4 2.) Did you ever have any issues with the idle, I want to avoid any irratic idle or fail a emmissions test. Thanks!!

I used engine spray paint from the auto parts store. It's OK, but chips easily. I still haven't found any spray paint in a can that I would consider to be good.

Where did your cylinderhead go? I changed out one of these pumps years before and never took the cylinder head off. lots of cussing if I remember correctly. "The resevoirs job is to spew oil over the belts!" LoL

I was already replacing the cylinder head, so I took care of the power steering pump at the same time. It made the job much easier.
