A really interesting discussion, though I have to admit that I had to rewind a couple of times and relisten to certain things.

Worth every single minute and just in time for me...I have been so tired of technique and skill learning as I have grown past any "norm" or rule of technique. I have been learning what works for me and this discussion has tied in well for me and may help moving forward. Thanks Mike, Merci Julien

This is truly a landmark moment. I've been following Julien since his Barbell Shrugged Podcast and been closely following you since RPE became more used in Starting Strength community from Jordan and Austin (about a year before they split). There's a lot of juicy ideas in both, the most important/radical being IT vs ET and developing a system for determining your training parameters. I think there's a lot of potential for applying your systematic methodology in leveraging/testing Julien's concepts. Interpreting ideas, challenging them, and applying/testing them, is all part of the process of improving (for both sides). I look forward to future insights!

Mike this is fantastic. I've been thinking about these and sharing them and developing with people for about a year now - the cues of external rotation and such never worked for bench squat or deadlift. When I thought of an internal torque, as Julien puts it as something that my external rotation can now drive off of, so to speak, that's when the joint becomes tight, stable and can be loaded maximally. Made a huge difference.

Hey Mike. Thanks so much for all of the free content, especially the free tracking app. I don’t think I’m a dumb guy. I’m a lawyer. I was recruited and worked for a large law firm in New York, blah blah back pat for myself. That said, I have no idea what this guy is saying. Tbh, it sounded a lot like taking a simple concept and obscuring it with technical jargon. This happens all the time in law, and in my experience, it is a sign that you don’t really understand what you are saying in a deep way. To be fair, I had the same reaction when listening to James Smith, and he is highly regarded in the professional sports world, so maybe I am just not understanding how technical jargon is absolutely necessary to explain certain physiological concepts. Just my 2 cents.

Dustin, I am a lawyer too, but with the advantage of having seen nearly all videos from Julien, participated in a week end seminar and applying it to my training, which is free of hurting myself since then. I admit that I still have a at least ten thousand questions, but sometimes I see the light at the end and think: Fuck, that shit is amazing, it really works. I understand that it sounds like chinese even though he speaks well english. So it is not the language, it is a new concept which needs to be understood. Search in KZbin for "Strongfit" and you find a shit load of great videos. And when I do not understand Julien or Richard, I check for "strongfit - sara salomon" and often Sara finds better words to describe Strongfit stuff.

So, I've listened to this twice now. Really great stuff, Thanks. My overarching question though, which I may have just missed, is how to apply this to powerlifting training specifically? Or is it already baked in to our training subconsciously? for example, pause or low pin squats for low stick point, should we be focusing on the weak point of switching torque chains? i.e. driving knees out from the hole? Putting emphasis on the jump pattern (speed work)? Or just focus on muscle stimulation, making the muscles strong enough to transition naturally? Thoughts?

I'm really not sure. For now, I think it applies from a technical standpoint. I'm sure there are some logical next steps that would arise if I understood Julien's position better (which will come in time I hope). I know he likes things like more structural balancing, etc.

Can you tell us your experience after applying what you learned in the deadlift(internal torque) and the other lifts please ?

It's been mostly the IT/ET thing. I have a couple tests now that I'm messing with but it will be longer to see if there's transfer.

Hey Mike loved the podcast mate and really seemed to explain a lot of things I couldn't myself with my anatomy background as a physio. Kinda works well with some of Kelly starretts ideas of torque although he uses it in different way slightly. But I always found myself somewhere in between how he describes things and how starting strength does (which is how I found you) and this is kinda bridging that gap. Something to experiment with...... I only have 1 really burning question...... Does that application of the internal torque in the loading / landing (eccentric) phase of a jump mean that the femoral I.R, knee Add, foot pronation moment that we have been taught and has been loosely researched to correlate with increased risk of ACL injury is actually not a big deal? Or is it that we still need neutral mechanics alignment but with the intention of loading by sitting back and in? Having coached 100's-1000's of athletes on jumping they all naturally fall to this position originally and following best evidence available I have coached them out of it with cues like breaking the floor apart; on landing and transition (external torque) etc but maybe that's not needed and instead just to achieve a safe alignment but allow that internal torque intention when creating tension? How that made sense
