Powerball is played by selecting six numbers, five between 1 and 69 … and one “powerball” between 1 and 26.
Let’s start by figuring out how many combinations there are for the first five balls. For the first ball, there are 69 possible picks. The second ball, only 68 numbers are left because the same number can’t be drawn twice. For the third - 67 numbers are in the pot - and so on.
That gives us: 69 x 68 x 67 x 66 x 65... and that equals 1,348,621,560 possible white ball combinations.
We also need an extra step to account for the number of possible orders that the 5 numbers can be drawn. The equation looks like this.
Plug it all in and you get: 11,238,513.
But we’re not done yet. We still need factor in the probability of hitting the powerball!
Since the red ball is drawn separately from a pool of 26 numbers, you have a 1 in 26 chance to match it.
So, we take our 11,238,513 and divide it by 1/26.
This gives you a 1 in 292,201,338 chance for that grand prize powerball ticket.
To put 1 in 292 million into perspective - that’s 1 person out of the population of Indonesia … 292 million people would fill more than 21 million airplanes… and more than 4,200 NFL stadiums!
