This is a very tough subject and I think you completly nailed it on the head: a year from now, these computer algorithms (please, don't call it intelligent) will have made a lot of strides and will be really powerful. To me, this means that any photo without a human angle or connection will be almost indistinguishable between a computer generated image and a human captured one. Landscape, food, advertising materials (even with people in it, because nowadays the photos are doctored and not really representative of reality) are some of the areas where professional photographers are more likely to suffer. On the other hand, pictures of important or unimportant moments in people's lives will never be able to be replaced by the computer generated images. Weddings, birthdays, family or friend reunion, a photo shoot because people feel like it (pregnancy, Christmas and other religious celebrations, milestones in one's life, or just because of no particular reason) will never be replaceable. For speciality photography, it is hard to guess where the pendulum will swing. Let's take photographing horses as an example. The computer generated images will be able to pass an image as real in more than 99% of the cases. But, for people that truly admire horses, they will probably go to additional lengths to ensure the animals are real, to be able to visit them and gawk at them. The question is if the market with these people for the pros is big enough, or if the computer generated horses are good enough to put the pros out of work. For me in particular, an amateur that will never pursue a pro business in photography, I couldn't care less about the endless talk on AI. My angle is to photograph my family, especially my two little daughters. There are not enough pictures online for the computers to train in their likeness and they are continually evolving - the better I can grow as a photographer, the more beautiful photos I can get of them growing up. As for videos, there are also pitfalls for pros and for the truth: the current name for the phenomenon is "deepfakes". My above points still stand for the "moving pictures". Finally, for me as the guy pressing the shutter, I get a lot more satisfaction from the photos I can take (with some light editing) than from photos I had no intervention. I marvel at the way light bends and give colours in the sky or the landscape or the smallest flower and, if I'm lucky enough, I get to make that into a photo. On my To Do list is to print the ones I like the most and see if they look good in my living room walls.

I just found your photography channel a few weeks back searching equestrian photography. You are a wise leader of a new revolution 😎 personally as history predicts through the ages.... the pendulum swings. We are going to go in reverse due to Ai ( my opinion). I was 6yo in 1968 when i got my 1st 126 camera. Before that I was drawing with pencils & watercolor. Before that, color crayons 🖍️ 😊This world is genuinely so beautiful & in order to truly create we need to embrace truth as you say. I remember doing negative retouch & print finish. The question is Why do we create? I create to Glorify Gods goodness, to share beauty & stellar scenes, I create to live my best life and to model freedom... its who I am & I will die if I cannot create. Ai is subtle security breach, it's invasive it's digital photography to the zillionth power. Photography poor girl doesn't deserve that. Im rethinking all I do & feeling like soon my capture of images will be more for my artistic uses such as back to penciling, watercoloring & limited numbered editions of artwork. I'm with you. Im already a rebel against cable television and all that jazz. Its a good time to have strong identity & purpose. 🙌🏽

I agree with you shootr, I feel the same way about modern photography. I've shelved my dslr's and am now using three old manual 35mm slr's and couple of 35mm point and shoots. I reckon I'll sell all my digital kit and invest in a nice medium format Rollieflex TLR (or not seeing as how pricey they are!) or maybe a Fujifilm 645 rangefinder and put some pennies towards a home darkroom. Digital photography, social media over saturation and the over editing and use of AI in digital photography is just depressing. I'm looking forward to your future content big fella.

You always make Great, Thoughtful Points, Drew, my Brother! 🙏🏾 I see it as potentially a wonderful tool for those who choose to use it as such, though it will never replace the more organic and natural forms of creating art. When situations become economically tough enough in the U.S. and worldwide, I see more and more people waking up faster than ever before and eventually relying less upon technology, corporations and government to varying degrees. I'm an Optimist while also a realist who understands that challenges face us as many of us begin to awaken and claim back our sovereign power. Much Love and Appreciation for you, man! same with music. but i believe it is simply shifting and throwing different light on the subject. division btw high quality man-made live acts and AI generated quick-consumer highly edited flashes will grow. and ppl will appreciate live acts even more in the future. so i believe who is really good at their craft will survive but in a close proximity to what makes us human. taking pics of food and objects for advertisement or ... concrete humans, pets, rituals, memories... making jinggles and techno music for huge numbing parties or music for theater areas, smaller venue, pubs... and actually playing and singing live without autotune. i believe it will be gold.

Hi Drew. As always thanks for sharing. I think that digital photography is still valid regardless of the new AI in photoshop and the other competitors that will follow. You can still take honest photography with any camera, digital or film. I like film too and have some nice medium format equipment. Even with film there is nothing stopping anyone scanning the film and then using AI in any of the apps that are available, or will come on the market. From my point of view nothing has really changed. A lot of what Photoshop will be offering is already available in Luminar Neo and ON1 Photo and now Affinity Photo. Honest photography was lost a long time ago where everyone was offered the ability to use software remove sections and replace skies and even add things that were never in the image in the first place. And I don't believe for one moment that even this new Adobe PS AI will be able to replicate some of the magnificent equine shots that you have taken with your digital cameras. Will be a shame to see you leave digital photography. Don't give up on it. Your work is much appreciated by many.

Myself: pro labs, one hour labs in the 80s, pro-photog - then the 35mm PHD cameras where everyone shot great pictures and Photoshop 1.0 came out. Ended photography and went digital on PS 2.0 for xx versions but went to IT instead late 90s giving up all photo. Knew the skill/art would go away. Then Smartphones and then AI.. another new future but left it long ago. Welcome to the next road travelled.

I guess we need to look at what we are trying to accomplish with our media. I shoot thousands of photographs for a non-profit organization that works with kids who have been severely burned. It is a strong organization that does amazing things for kids who are in desperate need. Their goal is to provide life changing opportunities for these kids, and I get to be on the media team as a volunteer for them! At the end of the day, all the kids and their families want is to see photographs and videos of the kids having fun, and the organization wants photos and video to show the public. I'm old school, and I fought digital when it came about many years ago. I'm not a fan of where editing software is going now, but the kids I photograph really don't care which camera or software I use. They just want to see themselves and their friends having fun together, they want it immediately, and they don't care if I use generative AI or sky replacements. Sorry for the rant, but I feel like I'm caught in the middle of a struggle. People are used to getting a picture on their cell phone and uploading it within seconds, and they don't understand why images from my 5D Mk III, that are shot in raw, can't be uploaded as fast as a cell phone. Anyway, thanks for posting this video!

I'll tested it the BETA of firefly not so impressive when trying to get some more reach into your cramped picture in amorph chaotic landscapes it does an acceptable screen useable job... (as long as you avoid to go to deep into details) but adding generated non existing items to the picture is more or less a failure!)... It's a hype sucking up tons of CPU Power and it only works with a stable internet connection and if working with very large landscapes it's a waste of time.

AI has definitely quashed my desire to dive into expanding my very near zero creative side. No point really. Happily plug along taking pictures of folks I know on their horses, photos of my dogs, the odd sunset and various 'moments in my history' to look back on as the years pass. Freezing a real moment in time for some will still be a thing, means nothing to the masses but it is the world to the individual. Most of the time I don't even think of myself as a photographer, I'm the guy that takes pictures. Certainly isn't going to pay the bills, it does keep me out of trouble. Been thinkin the same. First, as you say, to preserve truth. Second, because AI can already take the most mundane first draft and rewrite it in rhyming iambic pentameter. Imagine what it will do with music - new suites by ‘Bach’, new symphonies by ‘Mozart’ and ‘Beethoven’, new improvisations by ‘Miles’ and ‘Coltrane’. And in the movies, deus ex machina will have the sleight of hand of David Blaine. In short, if artists’ competition is with AI, it will be the death of the arts. It seems the rejection of AI for an unmediated analog experience of the world and the arts could be the path out of the siloed world of ‘influencers’ and ‘thought leaders’ and ‘content’ back to a world of real communication and soulful meaning.

Sorry to see you have been given that final push 😞. Honestly I don't believe AI would be able to truly replace the hands on photographer. Yes people can manipulate images until their hearts are content but the final images (in my opinion) are obviously doctored beyond the basic editing techniques which ruin the overall image. I think the whole process of taking a picture from location to preparation, pushing the shutter to printing is an art form we need to keep alive. People need to appreciate the effort photographers go to in capturing these images rather than purchase something that is an AI fallacy created by someone who can't be bothered to actually make the effort to find a real subject, to travel to a location, compose the image, use their knowledge of light and shadow etc etc. You cannot capture candid moments by using AI or show the true beauty of our world through a decision making bundle of microchips. You need to be there in the moment and freeze that moment forever. No amount of AI will ever have the emotion or mindfulness to replace that of a human with a camera. In your case, no AI could comment on the knowledge needed to photograph horses, talk about how it times the thud of hooves waiting for the perfect moment to take the shot as it runs along or understanding the horses body language in a way you can. Yeah AI can create a picture but it means fk all much the same as AI could do me a drawing like my 3 year old but it would never be a drawing "by" my 3 year old. Sorry bit of a rant but 🤷‍♂️

I'm finding myself using more film over the past 3 years of "2 weeks to flatten the curve" mostly because I'm a nostalgic old fart who enjoys the process as much as I enjoy taking pictures. As far as AI is concerned, I'm ok with SOME AI, such as DXO pure raw to mitigate noise from high iso. If I shot weddings for a living, AI assist could be helpful to cull burst shots for blur and closed eyes has the potential to speed up work flow. I'm not ok calling my picture a "picture" simply by just having AI software completely generating an image.

Photos have been altered before AI. Photos have been taken where the context is misleading. Truth is always going to be skewed. It still requires a will and a knowledge to alter photos. I think Photographers may end up in a role on educating the public on photos not representing the truth and how they are altered. AI is also heading for videos as well. I think we need to strongly emphasize knowing the source of the photo and emphasize whether it's an editorial or journalistic photo. I also think we need to come up with a rating system beyond G, PG, R, M, X, XX, XXX. that includes a scale for the truth. For instance, AI Hypothesis, AI Theory, AI Fiction, AI Fact, Fiction, Fact, etc... Fact would be a photo completely unedited in any way and if it was altered then it would be subject to prosecution and civil cases. This way people might be more cautionary on even labeling a Fact picture as unedited. The previous technologies needed this law because digital photography could be easily manipulated. Film even has some issues but can easily be identified because negatives are telling. Anyways that's my input and this issue is way past due. The second part of the rating system would be educating people on the new standard. I personally believe all education systems need to emphasize some critical thinking skills starting from elementary all the way through life. There's too many people vulnerable to misinformation and there's too many self-serving institutions out there using this volunerability. People must learn to question everything and only accept answers after deliberate and educated research.

My analogy for what digital photography has become is: it's like when guitarists is the 80s would try to play as fast as possible (after EVHs rise) and be technically stunning, but the "music" lacked soul and wasn't really enjoyable to listen too IMHO, like comparing Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani to David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Steve Howe, or Bert Jansch. That's what today's digital processing does to images compared to old school film.

"Video killed the radio star" - and video it was. AI will "kill" much more than video star...the shift is going to be huge, since it develops lighting fast... On one hand I've seen those tools are capable to remove tedious time and work which leads to more creativity. On the other those moments of work are beneficial for creative moments. Because of the energy of "contrast". Much like pain and relieve. But one strong impression made me anxious: because it's so easy and fast to use, it will make us forget how to get inspired. And make us tap into that more and more, because of instant results leading to quick gratification. Experiences will be replaced by the coziness of having an AI delivering us the spark. Technology is fascinating. But the more it advances, the more lazy and dull we become. And therefore dependent. And that is where the danger lies. When we become dependent, we become weak. And society is not a strong point...

Never surrender. I think photography can now become art. Art catches essence something AI can only reproduce. Photograph has had a long fight at being considered an Art Form. Now it has to become one. So what's going to happen photographers who already produce art will produce better art. Your equine photos are art. It might be time to take a challenge at beating AI. I think you're right about the videos though. I don't think photography can be separated from videography. Here's my predictions for what's coming. People are going to want photos in Video form. Homes are becoming smaller and the best display is the Oled TV's. Tuning photographs similar to Ansel Adams is going to become a thing again. Print will always remain the same in demand. Next will be the animation of photos, then integrating into video. Video is as sharp as photos now so this skill will be in higher demand. Story making and 3d Animation of Photo's and Video will be next. I think learning programs like blender will be the next level but it's not going to come as fast as everyone thinks. The average consumer just doesn't have the processing power to handle it at the level it requires. If a photographer doesn't have a reasonable skill level to draw, tell a story, produce videos and then create 3d videos and pictures they just won't be able to survive. AI will beat them or they will at be least puking out what will become boring and mundane for minimum wage. With these thoughts I've been gearing up my channel with all these considerations to beat AI. Trouble is it's tough doing it alone so progress is slow. I am starting the channel with a rough here's the basics and the videos to support it. I also have an idea how to form profitable teams. All the training is going to be done using as modern methods as are practical. I have some unique ones no one has thought of which encourages me on this less than profitable venture at this time. It's basically the simplification of a massive amount of information and techniques in art. I've seen you with a few when it comes to the horse. I've also decided on another technique. There's a lot of videos done well on every subject. Why redo them. Why can't I just include them in a formula via a playlist. Then apply the formula which includes their technique to take things a step forward for a finished project. When I say finished project I don't mean a post for Instagram. I mean a publication, poster, print, postcard, art card, and a video designed for oled type monitors. KZbin realizes everything related to information is on the computer. Videos being the primary source. KZbin's figuring out ways to increase it's profits and eventually is going to have creators working for minimum wage by charging for videos to be run and shown in their algorithm. They are already suggesting that and they are cutting out URL links. The only thing that will stop that is if a powerful competition emerges and my fingers are crossed for Microsoft, Adobe, or a better model for sharing videos is created.

I think a lot of photographers, amateur or professional, have just got their heads in the sand. The days of getting a contract to do some company shoot are already sinking swiftly down the plughole. As soon as AI manages to get eyes, limbs and joints looking realistic then that's the living and breathing photoshoot (probably within a year) down the pan. AI will also soon transfer to apps on phones which I think will even kill the 'have to be there' photoshoots like weddings. Photographer ..... soon to be in the same 'craft' artisan handmade wooden boat as blacksmith and willow basket maker. Never mind, it was good whilst it lasted. As soon as Technology realises the biggest threat to the planet is humans and Azimov's Three Laws of Robotics hold as much water as The Pirate Code then we'll all be hiding from the Arnie clones 🤖 I'll stay subscribed and hope you get down to some proper (film) photography soon.

I wouldn't worry as much about the AI, we're living in the days of smart phones and stupid people; to use technology - you need to roughly know how to do it, otherwise the technology will use you - and this to me will be the most likely outcome - if not a design feature of the AI systems. The creative process - whether it's digital or film - in photography will remain the same, you've got more ground to stand on, if you have your negatives. Another problem with digital photography - it took away the magic of darkroom processes, which I miss and would want to get back to it, at least to show my kids how an image develops - as this is pure witchcraft these days and amazing one at that. I think the process of developing both film and prints also adds to the healing properties of photography. I'd benefit myself from such therapy, as you're much more 'trigger happy' with digital, when you get instant gratification on your tiny LCD second after you pressed the shutter button and the fact it didn't cost you anything to do it, makes thinking about cropping, aperture etc. even less crucial. I would definitely shoot digital still, and I will - as it's more accessible - and a shot taken is better than one that got missed, never mind which way you do it.

I think this has the potential to destroy the photographic industry. Certain genres anyway. The line between professional and amateur has just narrowed.

likewise I do not want anypart of it at all, (AI reminds me of snake oil salesmen and used car sales, all hype and blah blah blah.) Sure some might be awesome but, nope.
