You have to applaud how with virtually little to no dev tools. In a world where concepts like UI/UX are still in their infancy. They came up with these games with pretty deep mechanics and systems. Clumsily deliveried at times. But they still damn tried. Now devs have all the tools, and UI/UX examples of countless genres. And yet we dont seem to see this complexity as often in games.

Spent a bunch of time tracking this game down, as I could not remember it's name. Then I stumbled across bullfrog and knew I was on the right track. I just showed it to my teenage kids as I was celebrating gleefully. They were laughing their heads off asking if I played it on a potatoe Hahaha. I told them we suffered with these games so they have games like overwatch and pubg. I remember my older brother soldering ram to the motherboard of our pc so it could play ultima underworld. Not sure but it was like a whopping 16 bytes or some tiny amount compared to today's standards. Good memories!

Its the first title to use a full model of the "command and conquer" engine. You click on a troop and tell them where to go, you get a verbal response and you caan choose from a menu what they are supposed to do, you "farm" people and food insteaad of berium or Spice, you invent things and you gain ground and more houses to finally rock over the opponent.

I beat it many times.. 7 total armies at once.. hundreds of soldiers. with maxed weaponry.. the key is zooming out to slow the game speed down.. and zooming in to speed it up as in during inventing processes. you need the game fast... but most of the time during battles you want the game slowed way down so you can colorize use of aggression stances. so as to force taking over armies not slay them off. especially the enemy generals. you want him on your side. :)
@adroharv92136 жыл бұрын
there's something you just can't convey when showing a more modern gamer these games. I guess it ties into less being more with your imagination solidifying the experience in a way in fact that you can't get these days. It's why reading a good book is always so rich and why people that played these games will always know something over the new kids of today. I wouldn't trade my experiences of old with the new of today despite some obvious gems in modern gaming

When I first played Populous, I had no luck at all following the tutorial in the manual, using the tutorial game option. With Powermonger, I just found it overwhelming.

I loved this game. I rented it a lot on Sega Genesis back in the 90's (so much so I shoulda bought it). I always thought some of the noises it made were funny. like WTF is that noise it makes while you sit there not doing anything? Like a winding scraping noise lol. And when you command your army to do something it always says "GET" ... what's up with that? lol great game anyway.
@doteaters9 жыл бұрын
Bruce Wrigleys Gumchewz I'll assume that the Genesis version was similar in this way as the Amiga version (which was what I played), where your commander would say "Yeah" with various amounts of excitement depending on what you ordered your army to do. He would whisper "Yeah" if he didn't like your order, and shout "YEAH!" if he really liked it. So if you told him just to go slaughter a sheep nearby he'd respond quietly, and when you ordered him to attack a village with maximum aggressiveness he'd shout excitedly. To me it always sounded like a loud belch when he was happy. As you say, the sound was excellent in Powermonger. It's one of my favourite things about the game.
@brucewrigleysgumchewz46679 жыл бұрын
It sounds more like GET than a Yeah. A Get.. with part of the G sound missing. I watched this video and the sounds are very similar though the pitch is a little higher here. Its more muffled in the Sega version tho. Typical Genesis 8 bit audio sampling
@doteaters9 жыл бұрын
Bruce Wrigleys Gumchewz It wasn't very clear in the Amiga version either, so it might have been some snippet of code that was transported fairly verbatim from platform to platform. It didn't really sound like "Yeah" either, but I think that's what the instruction manual says he says. Although when he's quiet I think you can hear the word more clearly. As I said, when he barks it it just sounds like a belch or a grunt.
@brucewrigleysgumchewz46679 жыл бұрын
The Genesis manual didnt even mention that part. EA was the dev who ported it over. Now if I could only figure out what in the world that sfx was that played just after your army slaughters a sheep and is sitting there camped out. Sounds like beating or something lol. It stops playing once you move to a new spot.
@sloubry8 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Wrigleys Gumchewz I think you are talking about the sound made by the fire - when they are all sitting around it. Also, he does not say "get" but "yeah" with different tone of voice, depending on the moral of his troups.

Populous 2 had good controls, but it lacked the feeling of risk that Power Monger gave us. Populous (1) ruled because it was 999 levels with varying degrees of difficulty. but none of them could beat Power Monger because of the raw strategy required to beat it. I got huge rushes out of forcing 6 generals to work for me. huge rushes when i could force an entire army to work for me, maybe killing only one of them just before they cave in to my might! walking in to battle with maxed weaponry...

This game used to puzzle me..some maps were really good and engaging. While others were a big pile of 💩 I found a lot commands didn't work and there was no context or direction..and you could absolutely tell the game developers got p##ed of naming the population when you select on a random person and they were called arghh or fhjuu or something to that effect lol 😂
