Boosted power is different then big cam power. The set up they showed can be used as a daily driver, impervious to heat and atmosphere. The old school cam set ups, load up, they don't like the heat, the power sucks down in the low rpm's, they buck with a stick shift at low speeds, etc. So hate on this all you want but it's not a bad deal.

Travis, didn’t say anything about 1,000 hp daily here. Just sayin if I put the amount of money they put in it, 518 seems fairly low since a typical 350 with decent heads and cam can put you north of 450. This is hardly more bang for your buck.

The block prep work is a good idea, but a few tips. -Leave the decks alone until after the block has been bored or decked. Your detailing might end up being removed by the machining. -You should chase all your threads twice - once before going to the machine shop to verify they are all good, and once after all of your machine work and detail work is done as part of your final cleaning to remove machining swarf. Thread chaser work best, but an old dull tap will also work. -when cleaning out blind bolt holes, turn the block on its side so the hole is parallel to the ground and use brake cleaner with the plastic tube to blow the crap out. Use a cloth over it unless you want to wear it. You will get a lot more crap out of blind holes this way than just using air, and the brake clean is also a degreaser than doesn't leave any residue. -Run a flat file over the deck to knock off any burrs caused by your detailing. You are not trying to remove metal, so just a few swipes in each direction will do. -Using a rat tail file, carefully remove any raised area from the original staking of the front oil galley plugs to hold them in. Again you want to just remove the raised part. This will make tapping it much easier. -When chamfering the bolt holes on the decks, put the head gasket on first and see if the holes are blocked or are open. Some engines have unused bolt holes. You don't have the chamfer them. Also, don't chamfer the water passages larger than the gasket. You are removing sealing surface, and many head gaskets have smaller holes in the water jacket passages than the block because they are acting as a restrictor to force water to go to the back of the block. Don't open up these holes. You have to understand that the reason you chamfer the holes is because the bolts will pull up the metal adjacent to the threads creating a small raised area around the bolt holes. Most factory original blocks will have a small chamfer, but if the block has ever been decked, it will probably be gone. The chamfering adds a little bit or crack resistance also, since it is much harder for a crack to form on the chamfer than a sharp edge. There is no downside to doing it.

You can't mention worldwide V8 technology without mentioning Edelbrock. When Vic created his company way back in 1938 he had no clue that he was creating an American legacy. What he did for the automotive performance world is unequivocal. I can't tell you how awesome it is to know that his entire family kept Edelbrock progressing after Otis Vic Sr passed. @ViperSRTnACR5 жыл бұрын
To everyone complaining about the low numbers, here's a few things to keep in mind. The setup is running on essentially the stock tune which is made very conservative for longevity purposes. If they did a bit of tuning and rejetting, you'd probably see another 25-35hp alone. Next is the stock 10psi pulley. A 12 or more psi pulley (with proper tuning) is obviously going to jump the numbers up quite a bit especially with bigger carbs. Lastly, head choice plays a really big factor in any forced induction application. I set of higher flowing heads would also increase hp/tq numbers without changing anything else.
@hawkdsl5 жыл бұрын
Its fuel injected.. no re-jeting required. Depending on the injectors, may not need new injectors either. I believe this is a really solid motor. It can be a daily driver, get stuck in traffic, and run into 100k plus mileage wit no problems. Most of the comments are not taking into account real street use. This is a expensive set up though... nice, but very pricey.
@ViperSRTnACR5 жыл бұрын
@@hawkdsl Didn't catch the fuel injection part. Either way, you have a good point of this being tuned for longevity. Once you get into the 8 and 900+ hp range, it becomes harder to maintain the smooth "daily driver" aspect of a build like this.

I think this build is more a tribute to Vic edelbrock. That engine is nearly 100% edelbrock. Just the basic dimensions are Chevy. Years ago, I think Hot Rod wanted to do a budget performance street engine. Their choice was the 350. So they went to the junkyard and bought a 350. Well, it was a 2 bolt main. Couldn’t find a 4 bolt main in the wild. Chunked the block and bought an aftermarket 4 bolt block. Had a cast crank. Chunked that and bought a steel crank. Ported the heads and cut it for larger valves. Aftermarket aluminum intake, lumpy crane cam (don’t recall about the connecting rods) and voila a really decent street engine for it’s day. But sounds like they couldn’t do what they set out to do. Not bad mouthing the 350 just the mentality of the builders.

I'd like to see this engine at 15 lbs of boost, however, the limiting factor will be those hypereutectic pistons, so you'd want to make sure you have some methanol injection to cool the pistons further than a heat exchanger.

you can make 500+ with a 350 and no boost. and id be taking an LS apart anyways to gap the rings for boost so maybe a little cheaper. maybe but those blow up too and around here people figured that out so LS arent as cheap in the northwest anymore

That’s funny! I know of several people who have 530hp+ mopar small blocks without a blower and on a stock rotating assembly!! Check Simpson speed shop for his 68 dart for build specs. That’s so cute, it needs a four bolt main to handle that power 😂😅🤣🤣 a mopar small block can handle 600-800hp on a stock rotating assembly 😂 oh chevy 😂 must be nice to finally have a real small block that can keep up with a mopar from 50 years ago. (Referring to the LS of course)

@WC_Beer_Reviews5 жыл бұрын
I think you should do a SBC build where you replicate the Z28 DZ motor, but then put a six pack Holley set up! You could take it a step further and make it a full roller set up to REALLY make the RPMs scream!
@WC_Beer_Reviews5 жыл бұрын
@@Bozemanjustin good to know! I'm most curious about how a six pack works with I high revving, small displacement motor? Will it unlock the best of both worlds?

i use to have a 327 that we built it like the 302 dz same stroke and i would run it against this engine any day with just a 4 barrel
@WC_Beer_Reviews5 жыл бұрын
@@jeffrey4547 my theory goes as such, small displacement dz setup would run on center 2 barrel around town, possibly fair fuel economy (for a carb V8) but then on the highway you lay into it and use all 6 barrels! Seems like the perfect scenario! They used to run these things will dual quads stock! So I know they can handle the CFMs
@jeffrey45475 жыл бұрын
@@WC_Beer_Reviews my pro built 327 for drag racing built by bell automotive running over 1200 hp the blue prints required 2 485 carbs . any more i would lose power by putting to much fuel in it and i'm running a tunnel ram a bit different then fuel injection or just a six pack but runs pump gas the best .

I would have been disappointed for the amount of money they spent! LOL My Paw Paw quit racing (bracket and index 1/8 mile stuff)in 2003 when I was 13 but has always helped me with my old LT1 Formula sbe nitrous setup that I started grudge racing and playing on the street when I was 17 and still helping me with my turbo small tire 99 Z28 he has taught me almost everything and always been there so in 2017 me and my uncle and mine and his buddies started getting his old 81 Camaro together he bracket raced so he was more worried about being consistent than fast so it went 7.50 (1/8 mile) almost every pass with a very mild 400 SBC so we basically just went over the whole car put some street car stuff in it like carpet and a passenger seat new leaf springs caltracs a 4.10 gear still has the spool in it lol we ditched the ugly hood scoop he bolted to the stock hood and got him a 4" cowl hood a 600$ white paint job from Maco and had the windows tinted my uncle had a 355 with good rods and pistons I bought a set of edelbrock e tec 200cc heads same ones they used in this vid but had sent them to CHF for port work and valve job and a port matched vic jr and a old Holley 850cfm double pumper and nitrous outlet plate a healthy hydraulic roller setup msd billet distributor and digital 7AL billet electric water pump new ceramic coated headers had the powerglide rebuilt and new billet fti valve body and trans brake and PTC converter it took us a year to finish it in 2018 he found out about it earlier than we wanted but I'm pretty sure that's the first time iv seen him cry then we all cried he loves it drives it to church some (he's also a preacher) takes nanny out to eat takes it to test and tune nights at the track to play and does what 73Yo dudes do lol it runs pretty good it goes 6.90s all day on motor and been 6.15 on the bottle. I know we got alot less money in that 355 and I know it makes around the same hp or more without the bottle and 675 or 700 on it, I dont know anybody that would be happy with 13,000 dollar 518hp SBC...!!
