This tournament is crazy. It shows what can happen if the players don't have to worry about rating.

What an amazing game, Aronian went all in! Excellent analysis GM King and THANK YOU x 100 for adding in arrows showing the last move... this makes your videos much more accessible and easy to follow for a patzer such as myself

I don't consider the arrows necessary myself - if you asked me, I'd say they're only unneeded clutter. However, I admit I hadn't considered those new to the game... If it helps these wonderful videos reach a broader audience, then I don't mind at all. GM Daniel King is doing a tremendously good job with his reporting, analysis and overall presentation, and certainly deserves more attention!

Yes, the interface is better, pieces no longer jump and skip around; it's much smoother overall. And I like arrows, I do it even alone when I do puzzles , it just helps to visualize the intended square(s).

Congrats Mr. King for your sustained work on this channel, which I've been following since the beginning, with your videos on the 2012 WCh match Anand-Gelfand. So many tournaments, already even several Candidates...fantastic job, Sir! Chess is a cruel game, and the story 'Aronian and the Candidates' is already one for the books. Permanent pre-tournament fav, although in this occasion his collapse was allready expected even by him. Too ingrained a habit. That 1.e4 against Kramnik. And after that, the dissappointment, the sensation of déjà-vu, the casual moves, and in this game, the frustration, that g4 which gets coldly refuted by the iceman Caruana. In Wijk he's shone many a time like a 21st Century Alekhine, twisted, unique. In this event he's starting to look tired, like an old Marshall with a bag full of tricks. It's sad because there are still seven rounds left, and I'm afraid that he's going down in flames... like he's meant to do, mercurial as he is! Best regards

Aronian threw everything but the kitchen sink at Fabi. Great job by Fabi showing nerves of steel!!!

Aronian was my favourite before the tournament began, having had a great 2017. Think he is suffering from nerves and pressure of expectations. Once he was playing catch up, he felt he had to push the boat out today and go for pawn g4. Caruana was very calm and just picked him off. I expect the winner will be between Caruana and Mamedyarov now. Good analysis as always from DK. Many thanks from a humble 1900 looking up at the Gods playing.

Aronian has had a lot of opportunities in previous games to collect points. He hasn't managed to grab his chance and is getting desperate. At least he's trying, but Caruana played well and more sharp. Caruana - Carlsen is getting closer.

There must be great satisfaction in winning by resignation with black against a player of Aronian's stature.

What an interesting game, full of rich content.....the Kh3 move made me cringe. I liked the comment at 8:50 where 'white was on the wrong end of a draw'. It may now be that Levon has blown his chances, meanwhile Fabi powers on..........

I'd never expect 16.g4 from a Super-GM. The attack is VERY speculative, in a position where White is comfortable otherwise. Usually they try to create threats elsewhere, THEN maybe consider an attack.

Aronian was just trying to mix things up, he is having a very bad tournament.

Having a bad tournament, he saw no point in keeping things solid and drawish. I actually appreciate his desire to shake things up and creating himself chances to win. Great chess.

Tals attacks were not speculative, they were usually to resolve a positional advantage. In other words Tal was a positional player who chose to finish in spectacle... Aronian did not have a positional advantage he was just trying his luck.

I wonder why black pawn on d4 was not taken in the beginning when it could.

Well Peter Svidler thought in the live broadcast it must be preparation.

Yes, it was preparation. The game did not turn out well for Levon, but do not underestimate the difficulty of facing a move like g4 at the board. On better form, Levon might have been successful: if he had played more quickly, he could have put more pressure on Fabi. Even in the game he missed a draw at the end.

I was really hoping he'd challenge Magnus. Alas, maybe it could be Fabi. Go USA... No disrespect to Caruana...but damn Levon. :\

Hallo Daniel, What about Aronion 39. Bc4 ???? threatening 40. Rg8x check and forking the Queen. and the move 39 Rxh6 from Black will not work , because the Queen can take the Rook and even if the black Bishop takes the white Queen h6 still white Rg8 will take the black queen. and if the black Queen want scape from the 8th rank then the black rook can be taken from white Queen. and the game can ends to a draw with the two Bishops. or may be Aronian can win with his beautiful Bishop on c4

The person that wins this tournament will be the one that plays the fewest reckless moves. This was verging on insanity. How often do you get a chance to become the challenger for the world chess championship. These super GMs are just squandering their opportunity.
@contestator1225

They know well the strength of the opponents and understand the impossibility to win the tournament without taking some risk. Taking into account that it's only first place that counts in the candidate tournament, they simply have to play sometimes risky. Ding Liren plays solidly, and well, he has made all draws at the moment. Karjakin is also solid as usual, but he's out of form now.

Александр Конев I can appreciate that but Aronian can beat anyone on his day but he seems hellbent on throwing this opportunity away.

Most respectful way to say it, would be this... Imagine looking at the game not knowing who/where played it. Obviously, one would not esteem white's level of play highly. PC is not the only one with harsh opinion of white's blind aggression. (Black got gifts including some pawns, bishop pair, completely weakened opponent's king - for nothing whatsoever in return) Or, it is all just too high for me to understand.
@jasondoe2596

Well, super-GM Peter Svidler thought during the live broadcast that it _must_ have been preparation, and at a later point called Aronian "the mad genius of chess, in the most complimentary way possible" (I'm paraphrasing here). So even if the attack turned out overly ambitious, it certainly shows creativity, and poses problems for Black that aren't easy to solve on the spot. IMO you could criticize Levon's very risky approach to the tournament, especially against such a dangerous opponent, but not the attack itself. Us Caissa worshipers should applaud such games :D
