This game clearly shows that Anand's age has caught up with him. There is no way he would have missed this tactical win in his prime. A tad disappointing for us fans but that is the way it goes - all tigers age.

The major point is rather that the "tiger" gets more wise, and less "wild", and mostly tends to avoid uncalculable and exhausting risks. - "Playing it safe", and mostly technical, however can often cost half a point against best defense.

Winning a won endgame - one of the toughest things to do in chess. 30 Rc1 wasn't terribly hard to spot, though as GM King points out, you also have to see 32 e6. Perhaps Vishy simply thought he had the time to play 30 g3 and consolidate first, before an eventual Rc1. But, obviously not. Anish was too alert on the defense.

Vishy really does like his Knights in his endgames - he's had N v B in most of the games you've shown of his, DK

A ha, that's why whenever I watch Anand's games I can't help thinking knight is better than bishop, and try to preserve knights pair :)

I love how you give your own insight into the moves, instead of just reading of the moves like some other channels which shall not be named cough* agadmator cough.

Daniel, at 15:23 I think you might have forgotten your prep. The point is not that the king has to stay next to the bishop (after all, e8 is available) - the point is that the king can't defend the bishop effectively because on e7 it's still subject to the knight fork on g6. Great analysis as usual - thank you.

I'm just an amateur player, but I really don't get why this 20. c3, Q.d3 and B.e3 approach looks more appealing than the direct 20. N3d4 and Q.g4. It centralizes the knight, it gives more options to the queen, presents black with threats to g7 and the knight on b4. What's not to like?

I'm really surprised Vishi didn't see 32.e6 and 33.Ne5 as he is such a good player with Knights and it wasn't that hard to find. 30.Rac1 looks so natural I would have played it without even thinking much about it. Would I then have found 32.e6! Possibly, because it's not that much further ahead in thinking and I like endgames and this is quite a typical trick with the Knight.

But he's still putting players in their prime almost half his age on the back foot with practical middlegame chess... I'm still impressed.

@@ivololmay be but it is a fact that human chess's greatest advantage is to put ur opponent under pressure by playing attacking chess when u hold the advantage and press for the win as ur opponent struggles to find the right answers; unlike a computer which has no emotions and just cuts thru to the perfect defense.
