People who think coming in second after a string of first place wins means anything at all has changed for a player (other than the usual ups and downs to be found in any athlete's career) don't understand chess, sports, the nature of competition and, I would suggest, life. My God! After Magnus' magnificent performance and strings of victories this year - and, btw, still no loses in classical games - how can anyone bemoan anything about how Magnus is doing? There's always been fairweather fans, trouble is now they get to pester us with their comments all over the KZbin. And lastly, just to note: every other top 10 to top 15 player has had much much poorer tournament performances this year (including Ding, Fabi, Levon, etc) than Magnus during this Sinquefield Cup. I guess it's true for a lot of people: "Your only as good as your last perfornance " and "What have you done for me lately?"

Shockprowl yep IMO Ding is next world champion. Carlsen always struggles against Ding. I used to think Carlsen >>> Ding in rapid and blitz due to the match in 2017 where Carlsen absolutely destroyed ding, but not anymore. Ding bear Carlsen 2-1 in sinquefield rapid/blitz tournament, and then he best Carlsen again in the rapid and blitz tiebreak 3-1. So if anything ding should be considered equal or even favourite in future rapid/blitz matchup. And in classical, Carlsen always struggles against ding, and manages to save it a lot of the time. But yeah, I think their head 2 head is even right now.

With all the draws is there a way to tweak classical chess with different time controls or maybe a point structure for more incentives for a win? The games are interesting but with how long they take and then most of the time they end up in a draw it seems the rapid and blitz tourneys are more interesting.

this has been discussed for decades. one idea was implemented recently in a top tournament where if there's a draw you play a round of armageddon blitz. there is no perfect solution though.

The only way that you can discourage draws is adding a monetary incentive to win. For a Swiss system tournament if the first player had four wins and a loss and the second player had three wins and two draws the first player would get 4/7 of the combined prize fund. If there was a third player who also had four wins and one loss then 4/11, 4/11 and 3/11. For a round-robin like the current one in sinquefeld take a good chunk of the price fund and allocate it the same way between players with wins. I may be old school, but seeing the world championship decided by speed chess rubs me the wrong way. Forcing the Challenger to win at least one game seems to be a fair advantage for the champion. Aside from the championship match it doesn't bother me if they add speed chess tiebreaks to make it more interesting.

I've seen 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw proposed. Ultimately the only solution is Fischerrandom, opening theory is so deep, up to 20 moves, there's no life left in the positions that remain and chess really is experiencing draw death at the top level.

I for one don't want to change the rules of classical chess. how could we appreciate all of the great games the past if the rules were changed? Just change the price funds to reward winning. pinch their purses hard enough and sooner or later the grandmasters are going to squeak.

Ding is a better tactician than Carlsen this is why it likely didn't work, Carlsen usually wins in strategic middle game or endgames.

This is plausible, but I'm not so sure. A lot of Magnus' calculation is hidden because he's using tactics to advance positional goals instead of winning material. Credit to Sam Shankland for bringing this to my attention.

Ding is nowhere near the great player Magnus is. He wins a single tournament and the "experts" are out in force now proclaiming him king. Laughable. He may one day be among the greats like Kasparov, Fischer, Carlsen... But he's got a long way to go. Lol!

Magnus has lost the superiority in the opening stage he has enjoyed through most of the year - that simple. Ding played fantastic. Magnus needs a haircut. I worked plenty of "real honest" jobs in my 7 decades. I was a medium strength club level player. 1900 to 2100 and I remember 5-round weekend tournaments being exhausting. I am sure Magnus will appreciate the advice about his hair. I know I would.

Nothing is more gruelling than playing chess at this level. It's pure mental toughness that gets you through. Chances are, Magnus Carlsen works a hell of a lot harder for his money than you.
