I just wanted to thank you for making this video. I'm nearly 50 years old and brand new to kart racing (aside from the arrive & drive businesses). I bought myself a 125cc TaG kart and learned that I needed a different brand of tires to race in my region. After purchasing a second set of wheels and a bunch of tires, I tuned into KZbin for some tire changing tips. I kept finding videos of guys doing it by hand and making it look so easy, so I dove in armed with a bowl of soapy water and my tired, beat up, nearly 50 year old hands. Miraculously, I got my first tire changed, but I think the planets may have all been aligned for that brief moment that the second bead popped on because no matter how much pushing, pulling, prying, and twisting... and countless four letter words, I couldn't recreate my first success. I went back to KZbin to do more tip finding, and that's when I came across your video, and had my first exposure to tire scissor tongs. You were not kidding when you said it is the best tool in a kart racer's collection. I absolutely love those things. So much that I was a little disappointed once I had finished mounting my race and practice wheels sets, and had no more tires to mount. So thank you for introducing me to that ingenious tool and for doing a tutorial of how to use it in your video. It was a life (and hand) saver for me. Happy karting!

@PowerRepublic one of the reasons it's so popular is every tire change I'm going back to look at it again and again.... don't take this personally but the moment my Mrs hears your voice if she enters the garage she leaves immediately.... the cue that I'm frustrated that things aren't going well 😂😂

First time I did it myself, and what you do in 5 minutes it takes me 5 hours literally. I didn’t grease the wheels and bead of the tire and when I inflate it the bead get stuck and don’t pass to the end of the wheel. I learned it is very important to follow every single instruction from those who know.

Great video mate. I started karting a few months ago and changing tyres was probably the most daunting thing at first. It took 6 hours to do it the first time. Hello There are many identical videos but all of them use old tires for reassembly which are much more flexible and therefore very easy to fit… You are the first to use new rear tyres. I tried a scissor for the first time: removing and refitting the front tires: very easy, removing the rear tires very easy. Reassembly of the rear tires: impossible. I will try the "trick" you give: press on the center of the tire to facilitate the insertion of the cleats on the rim. I think that's the solution. But since you're rather "sturdy" and seem to force a lot. I made an extension for the scissor arms (simple 20mm*20mm square tube that fits over the scissor arms - I think 35cm would be enough). Next time I'll try your technique. It's nice to find an honest video on the subject.. With thanks

I heard those scissor things can hurt your rim, so it's better to do it by hand if you can. I just changed all four of my slicks and put 4 rain tires on new rims by hand. Then I promptly bought the tire changing scissors for next time because hell if I'm going through THAT again. I'll just buy new rims when the time comes.

My son has a Rotax Micro MAX so trying to learn how to tune it, he is 8 years old and I have the feeling the kart is not doing its best, got it almost new second hand 1 and a half years ago. I think It can be tuned for better or worst performance, correct? thanks again for sharing your knowledge, really appreciate from Spain. Regards.
@PowerRepublic
@PowerRepublic 5 жыл бұрын
Hola David. Thanks for the positive vibes. The Micro Max are excellent for the young drivers. Do you get many drivers over in Spain with the Rotax? When the drivers are so young it's hard to tell if the kart and engine are really holding the driver back, because we all learn how to do things at different speeds. In my experience, the more times you go to the track and practise, the faster your driver will progress. More so than the latest and greatest chassis with all the changes to it's set up. If you're overwhelmed by the technical side of the sport, relax. That is totally normal feeling. Just remember , karting is a fun thing to do with your children, especially when they are under 10 years old.
@davidsaez8691
@davidsaez8691 5 жыл бұрын
@@PowerRepublic yes, there are quite a few children driving Rotax. In the current place we are racing now there are more Pumas 85 c.c., which seem to be faster than the Rotax Micro. You are right, the best thing is to let the children enjoy, some parents are very strict with their children since 6, 7, 8 and put a lot of pressure on them, really sad.

Hi guys, absolutely love your videos, I've learnt a heap of stuff, thank you !!! I'm having a fair bit of trouble seating the bead of the new tire on the rim. I've used proper tire bead wax and warm water with dishwashing detergent. I inflate the tires (Maxxis) to about 60-70 psi and I am worried about going any higher. One side will usually pop but the other side either doesn't go on at all or only partially goes on. I've tried taking the valve out of the stem as well but nothing seems to work! Any tricks or tips? Should i go higher pressure? or just keep perservering with the current technique? You guys make it seem so easy lol. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I should also say they're the Rookie Maxxis tires going onto OTK AXJ rims - it's my son's kart.

Hey RC, thanks heaps for tuning in, hope to see you one day at a track in your POWER REPUBLIC tee shirt ;) with the the tyres, I pump them up to about 50-55 psi. normally one side of the tyre will be up and the other stuck down. put the pumped tyre under the bead breaker again, with the up side under the blade, and use some pressure to push it half way down. that should make the other side pop up. then release the pressure and your golden!!!

Maybe try tyre lube on the bead of the tyre and on the rim? it might help your compressor. We have a workshop size 240V compressor that has 3 pistons and about 270litres a minute of CFM if that helps. But i have a small compressor 12V in my go kart trailer and it works fine too. I would try the lube first. Hope that helps.

Watch everyone doing tires. Everyone has their own technique. Take bits and pieces to what is most efficient for you. I watched someone fold tires by hand and they were quick. Problem is I could not fold an envinco blue by hand due to the raw strength, I could however mimic it by using my knees to fold the tire in the same place. There is never any tire lube in the pits so I use foaming glass cleaner on the bead being careful not to get it inside of the tire (basically spray it on your hand and wipe around the tire bead only).

Derek...I have lots of problems getting new rear mojo D5 tyres to seal and initially build air pressure due to the excessive leakage from the gap between the bead area and rim. I have tried inflating with the valve core removed but a lot of air pressure still escapes. Any tips to get them to seal initially... Thanks Brian from Ireland.
@PowerRepublic
@PowerRepublic 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, I think from memory the D2's were a mission as well to get going on the bead. I think that you put the air gun on the valve, pull the trigger to get the air flowing and then.....punch the tyre in the centre of the tread hard and fast ( like a fast jab punch but with the hammer fist style) and that is sometimes enough to get them started. Also too, try not to stack the tyres on top of each other during storage cause it make the tyres compress a bit more and then its harder to get them started with the air.
@p.c.h.6721
@p.c.h.6721 5 жыл бұрын
When that happens, just put you knee on the tyre and at the same time give it air, that way always works. Good luck.

yeah its if you are running high grip sticky tyres with really low pressures. probably a bit of overkill these days for most classes, in my opinion.

States " if you have not got a set of tyres scissors you must get them as it makes changing tyres so easy ". Then proceeds to get the wheel out of the tyre using his hands. You need to use the tyre scissors to pop the wheel out of the tyre.

It's not actually that difficult to take a tyre off the rim using your bear hands. You just need to know the technique)) My mechanic showed me how to do that, and I didn't get it the first couple of times. But now I change my tyres all the times.

This doesn't work with Evinco Blue. I spent days trying the get the tyre of and on the rim. Using the scissors is easy, "popping the tyre" in and out does not.
