The revenant bear scene looks SO amazing! I can’t imagine it being done practically. Also I didn’t know Stranger Things used some practical effects! Cool video babe❤️

There is a balance to be had and you can achieve a good look intentionally utilizing both practical and VFX. And the OG Jurassic Park is the best example till this day. Great topic

@@Sasha.GreenVFX I saw it and I enjoyed it. I do believe it did just enough to justify make more of the same thing. The practicals were more in the environment and miniature models than the creatures themselves. There’s one creature that utilizes practical almost completely. And it looks great until it’s shown way too much. Other than that they struck a decent balance.

I agree , a fine mixture of both is the best you could do…I don’t like just practical effects myself .sometimes it works but man , they go through soooo much to try to make it look good..too much work..just do VFX 😂…thanks a for this video man ! Very insightful

2:52 It doesn't look bad, but I agree, organic creatures made with practical effects do have the tendency to look like puppets in revealing lighting.

Good points. However I disagree about the OG Planet of the Apes. The make-up may be cheesy compared to today, but the story and filmmaking is fantastic. It's a great movie. There are plenty of movies today with fantastic CGI that suck. Love your work!

@@willvazquez3218 Thank you so much! Yeah I see how that makes sense! I do think that nowadays it feels like a lot of movies just don’t have good story telling honestly and they just rely on how cool and good they can make it look. Thanks again I really appreciate it!!

6:00 I think practical effects works for this specific shot since it's very short but the prop looks way too stiff lol. Edit: 6:26 is def a better option tho

@@supercalifragilisticex Yeah I feel if they could figure out a better way to make them not seem so stiff it could be a big improvement!

With practical everything is real even when it looks bad. Humans accept practical effects more easily. You can entertain people with just sock puppets because suspension of disbelief. The art of good editing makes a big difference. With practical effects you have to plan well and show only minimum amount of anything. With 3D monsters usually the opposite happens and they always do that towards the camera roar that you demonstrate at 7:43. Someone build awesome rig for that creature and now they want to demonstrate everything it can do. Your actors also react differently to real things on your set or if they get fake blood to their faces vs VFX blood.

@@m.j.nilsson Great comment! That’s a very interesting point! I definitely agree, the power of editing has such a big role in how well practical effects can be perceived. I personally just don’t like the idea of feeling restricted when using practical effects for creatures, I like the flexibility 3D monster gives you! Do you have a preference for seeing either Practical creature effects or CG Creature effects? Did the practical effects in the new Alien Romulus Movie work for you? I still haven’t seen it so I can’t fully say yet 😅

My guess is that "we make everything practical" sounds more like hard work and people think that doing it on a computer is cheating and easy. Just look at the hype when someone says "it was done for real". And idk I have the feeling that showing the animatronics in BTS is a marketing thing and they replace or enhance it anyway in post
@Sasha.GreenVFX

Yes my thoughts exactly! I never really understood why some people feel that way. In my head whatever is gonna make the end result look the most convincing is the best option whether it’s practical or not, but I guess that comes down to personal preference🤷🏻‍♂️
