As a pagan I can tell ya. Christians are the only one bothered by this. Everytime I get a “merry Christmas” i respond with a “joyful solstice!” And 9/10 times they freak out and stare or yell at me as if I had personally ripped their crosses off of their walls. Conservative Christian’s are the biggest babies of all time during the holidays. In my own friend group we have me who celebrates solstice, someone who celebrates Christmas, someone who celebrates yule, and someone who celebrates a secular Christmas like holiday (atheist). When we see each other we all wish each other a happy holidays or sometimes we shout all of the sayings at once becuase it’s fun and it’s never ever been an issue. Having hot cocoa with friends is so much more important than the “correct” words to say at these events haha

Didn't they literally change Jesus' birthday to Christmas? It used to be around Easter or something wasn't it? A lot of traditions we still have today of holidays such as Christmas/Yule, Easter, and of course Halloween, are taken from Paganism/Celtic culture. Eg, bringing a tree in, wreaths, (I'm not sure of the mistletoe if that's from paganism or a strange adaption from Norse legend or?), the association of certain plants such as the oak tree and pine, holly, etc. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, correct me if I'm wrong on anything or missing anything, I find this stuff interesting.
@jenblack98
@jenblack98 Жыл бұрын
@@starsiadraws Yeah this isn't true. The reality is that most of the people who converted to Christianity in European society were previously pagan and so they kept their traditions after converting. In fact, missionaries were told not to stop people from practising traditions that did not conflict with Christian teachings. It is a myth that Christianity appropriated paganism and more so that pagans became Christians and kept their practices.
@DrDinoNuggies
@DrDinoNuggies Жыл бұрын
@@jenblack98 kinda but not really. It is pretty debated as to why we celebrate Christmas on December 25th, we know that Sol Invictus was celebrated by Romans on that same day until their switch to Christianity and that there were other pagan holidays during this time. So while we don’t know for sure, it is extremely likely that the date was adopted as a direct replacement for those holidays.

As a former Christian I can say this: my favorite camp game to play as a kid was called underground church. It was based on Roman times when Christian’s were being killed. You had to be a Christian in secret and try not to get caught or you were out. The way I was taught was that Christian’s are still that oppressed today and we always have to be ready to defend our beliefs against the whole world who was supposedly against us. They love that narrative, it takes out all of the horrific things they have done in the name of conversion to their religion.

I've gotten into the habit of figuring out exactly which holiday is what day in December to counter the "It's MERRY CHRISTMAS" with the greeting for the exact holiday the day is, people started to backpedal really fast when I started doing that and I get to learn about holidays I didn't really know about before: a win-win situation in my opinion.

As Annamarie said most people with real problems don’t give a damn about this lol and i too always thought that “happy holidays” was just a way to be concise and include everythingg

Working in retail, I can tell you Christmas is alive and well. I personally don't wish customers any thing other than have a nice day. I can also say that some of my worst customers where a cross around their neck.

Y'know what this video (Pragerman) made me wanna do? Make it so that EVERYONE has to properly guess my religion and gimme a gift on the proper day for my religious holiday. Otherwise I'm gonna be so offended I'm gonna post it on every social media, then unfriend, then make a video. I'll fill my echo chamber with trashtalk about anyone who doesn't! And I won't tell them what religion I am.. just to fuck with them that much more. Let's *all* be so petty as Mr. Pragerman! ------ P.S. although I live in USA, where I'm originally from - Bosnia & Herzegovina - saying "Happy Holidays" means: - Happy Catholic Christmas on Dec. 25th - Happy New Years (it's BIG! often 3 days party. Basically, it connects the 2 Christmases around it so you don't get sober from Dec 24 to Jan 7-8 or thereabouts.. with very little memory of what transpired but 20lbs heavier) - Happy Orthodox Christmas on Jan. 6th + - if Muslim Bajram/Eid falls in Dec/Jan then it includes that as well (Bajram/Eid are 2 moving holidays. Mr. Pragerman is gonna love this game ☺️).

I had a very similar experience with my mom the past few weeks. As u probably don’t know, my mom is very religious (Christian) and she said something about her manager complaining about having to say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”. I reassured her that she doesn’t HAVE to do or say anything but it would be more accepting but she went on about it for weeks. AND WERE ONLY IN THE SECOND WEEK OF DECEMBER! It’s kinda sad about how parents are so intolerant that they try to teach kids to be like them too.

I think it really boils down to they think that including others makes them have less of a thing. Including other holiday somehow makes Christmas less important. They do this with so many subjects and it is all the same though process. Also I was surprised at the list you had of December holidays because I didn't realize how many different Catholic and Christian holidays were in December. I know of several other holidays from other religions and beliefs but I hadn't heard of a lot of those.

Conservatives really say shit like "asking me to respect trans people's pronouns is you trying to control my thoughts and speech!! Telling me what to say is un-American!" but then someone wishes them a happy holidays and they start whining and crying like "YOU need to wish ME a MERRY CHRISTMAS!! YOU HAVE TO! How dare you tell ME happy holidays!!"

As an Australian our 'Christmas Holidays' are also our 'Summer Holidays' and there's literally no confusion, we just call it the Holidays, idk why Americans have such a weird Christmas fit. I'm sure there's also right leaning Aussies like this too tho
