Went on a Parie Dog hunt WAY BACK(I was 20, I am now 65) I used a 22-250 Savage and I STILL prefer that Caliber to this day for the ground Squirrels!

I mostly use a 17HMR. Prairie dogs are like the fishing of hunting. Just sit and wait, plenty of nibbles, a lot of catches.

Nice choice of bingbangs. I use 22LR on prairie poodles a lot just for the challenge. If you have an accurate enough gun, 300 yards is very doable if you can dope the wind and drop. I've also used big bores when I'm mad at my shoulder or just feel like staying in practice with 'em. (Fun fact; 458 WinMag doesn't care if there's a foot of dirt between the muzzle and 'dog!)

For me the 223 is at the bottom of those 3. I like them all but the 204 is my favorite. Recently acquired a 204 upper with an ER Shaw bull barrel. Just shot it today, put an Athlon Talos BTR 4-14x44 FFP on it. Reticle a bit busy for me. Sighted it in at 50 yards and then put two in a 1" circle at 171 yards. As far as I shoot safely. Love the 204 but any of the 3 will get it done.

I like the 22/250 myself, but also like the savage A-17 in automatic, so you can chase them if miss a shot. 204 burns up barrels to quick, and the 223 is tried and true, but for me, it’s the 22/250 for me. I have an old Remington 700, and I reload with 40 gr v-max. That’s what my gun likes the best. Has 1-10 twist. 1-9 twist would probably like a little higher grain. Sorry for being so long, but figured you liked the input. Only wish I was going along. Have great time, and what state are you going to??? Neighbor from Kentucky.

For varmints, my go-to is a Remington 700 Varmint Synthetic in .22-250, followed by my Ruger M77 in .223. For closer work I enjoy using a Ruger 77/17 in .17 HMR, and for bigger annoyances like coyotes I prefer my Browning Micro Hunter in .243 (very lightweight and handy).

I use .223 handloads only, not commercial for prairie dogs and small game. Never had to venture into .204 or 22-250 which are just as awesome as the .223. Good hunting Who-Tee- Who!

22-250 and 17WSM are my go to calibers for hunting lil dogs. I only use the 22-250 when it's pretty windy since the little 20gr 17 doesn't handle wind that well.

I was just talking with my grandson about prairie dog hunting, he lives in Cheyenne. Was going to use my AR, my 25-06, and maybe even my Garand with some 125s. Wife still recovering from spine surgery, so it may be next year. Have fun. You really should take your hand painted mod 700 in 223. Just put your ears on.

.204 ruger is good, .22-250 is better. But call me old school all you want😂 I prefer the old .220 swift with a tighter twist rate barrel and handloads!. I also like the near extinct ..223 short magnum . Haven't tried the .224 Wylde yet its on the list! Good luck on the hunting trip !

When I lived in SD, my .204 and .17 HMR were my go to's. I experimented with many .223 lightweight varmint rounds and none of them were worth it. AR's are not known for exceptional accuracy to start with, and sub 55gr bullets are even less accurate in modern twist rate barrels. I would also take my hunting setups out to practice on them for wind holds for when it was time to load the freezer. I had buddies that ran 22-250's, and one that ran a .220 Swift.

I have taken to also using my deer rifles on varmints. I my main varmint rifle is my 220 swift, and I use a 223 for walking round, but I always bring my 300 win mag and take a few shots for practice. If you can take the tiny critters at 200-300 yards, deer are going to be easy.

They are all an awful lot of power for prairie dogs. I would likely take my 17 WSM. It is the most accurate rifle I own. I really wish that it had have been a 20 WSM though. That would have been perfect.

We had some prairie dogs out in NE when I lived there. A friend of mine had a friend who was friends with a rancher who had issues with them, so I was asked if I wanted to go, which I couldn't resist. I didn't have my AR's or 243 at that time, so I used my Mosin. My buddy had his 204 Ruger with reloads. I only shot two praire dogs that I was within 200 yards of using irons and that was tough with a mosin, but the shots that connected, it blew them apart. The 204 Ruger my buddy had was a laser beam and he was easily getting them at 300 yards. Next weekend my dad and I are going to help a friend who has a problem with woodchucks, so I'm not sure what bang bang I wanna use, but I'm thinking for sure my 243.

Any idea what kind of ranges you're expecting for the prairie dogs? Years back, I was at my local Cabelas. A guy in front of me in line had a cart completely filled with .223 ammo they had on sale. He said he was going out west with a couple friends to another friend's property, where they were going to spend the week prairie dog hunting, and he was given the task of picking up ammo for everyone. He had, I think, a couple hundred boxes of ammo. And it was on sale for $6 per box. Ammo was cheap and plentiful back then.

you can usually find those small square bullet hole patches for paper targets on reels pretty cheap in some gunshops.. i know you like making paperplate targets, but i think those would be alot faster than using markers to make a bullseye on the paperplate..prolly cheaper too... fyi

If the prairie dogs where you're going haven't been hunted to much a fun thing to do is start with a shotgun and walk through the town. This is a lot of fun until the dogs get spooked. You can also take a couple of heavy fishing poles. Place a loop of line around the entrance to a whole. If a dog sticks its head out jerk the line and have fun. Keep that line tight and make sure you practice nice clean catch and release.

I have shot hundreds of PDs with .223 55VMAX bullets. It is really all you need. Typical ranges will be 50-300m. If you are consistently encountering shots over 300m, something is wrong. You need to move or try another day. I have a 22-250 that I rarely shoot because the extra power and report are really not worth it in my opinion.
