I’ve seen many videos on this subject, and I think I enjoyed yours the most. Clear, concise explanations with just enough information to get a good snapshot on the topic.

Terry, you do a GREAT job explaining things! Here are three unanswered questions for you. 1) While surfing the web, and eBay in particular, I've never seen pie-shaped pieces of a Spanish milled dollar for sale. I've only seen parts of a cob. Why is this? I thought milled dollars were also cut to make change. 2) The Spanish in the new world made cobs which were shipped back to Spain to be made into more completed currency, like Milled Dollars. Why did they expend the time and effort to make cobs prior to shipment, when they could have simply shipped bars of silver back to Spain? 3) Pieces of 8 were meant to be divided when change was needed. What tool did the average person use to cut a thick Piece of 8? I dare someone to use a jackknife to do this task? If a specialized tool was used, how come I've never seen one for sale on the Internet? Thanks for your help!

All Great Questions IMO, Now I got to try looking for a answer for it myself. Just how the hell did they cut them? a hammer and Cold chisel..

@@stemtostern7611 The Spanish apparently created cobs before sailing back to Spain so they could purchase things along the long trip home. Some of the ships stopped six or more times en route and used the cobs to buy food, and other items they could possibly resell in Spain. The cobs were much easier to use to pay for these things than bars of silver.

Thanks for the info on the 1715 fleet. I am looking for some specific literature on the subject of cob coins from the Americas. I grew up in the keys and lived there most of my life so the Atocha and the Margarita, i have a coin from each, were real popular. I also have an additional 4 reale origin mexico. but I want to get more into the collecting and understanding the history of these coins Id like to know more about the assayers from the three mints and any bit more history that might be told. Thank you for any info you may be able to pass. Regards,

Ebay is good, just have to watch out for fakes. And some are extremely good. Otherwise Sedwick coins is very reputable. Or shops in Florida, but most of those are very overpriced for tourists.

The singular of "reales" is just "real", without an "e" at the end. Spanish uses "-es" to pluralize words that end in consonants. Not sure why so many American collectors seem to get that wrong.

These days, you can buy a one Reale for about $50. 2 Reale for $60-$200, 4 Reale for $200+, and 8Reales for $250-$1,000+. Most 8 Reales I get are in the $300-400 range. But if you want ones from the famous wrecks, like the 1715 he mentioned, they cost significantly more. From the Atocha wreck?! They start around $1,000....
