Prannoy Roy's Analysis Of Karnataka Election Results

The Karnataka election ended in a cliffhanger today. The BJP emerged the single largest party but short of an outright majority. The party's BS Yeddyurappa met the governor and asked for a chance to prove his majority. The Janata Dal Secular (JDS), which finished third, also told the governor it would form the government with Congress support. What happens next depends entirely on the governor who was appointed by the Centre four years ago.

Why can't a Guv have a one on one with the legislators and make them fill up a relevant format under their signature and seal which may be turned into a legal undertaking while the bandobust is under way for the swearing in. They should adhere to a cooling off period before they can switch sides.

Regarding karnataka polls it seems Honorable Governor has made a tactical error which wud be detrimental to the BRILLIANT STRATEGIST OF BJP. Had the governor revoked his own order and invited the post alliance of Congress and JDS to prove its majority in the floor test ,may be there were chances to sabotage that move by the Hook or Crook strategy but atleast it would HAVE STALLED THE PROPOSED DEVIOUS STRATEGY OF CONGRESS IN MANIPUR,MAEGHALYA AND GOA,WHICH OPTION WILL BE AVAILABLE TO THEM EVEN IF IT WINS OR LOSES IN kARNATAKA.

@Pranoy Roy...Sir I am not a lawyer nor an expert on constitution. But I have some questions. 1. How on earth is we are looking at 51% majority in a multi faced election. 2. I heard a gentleman calling defections unethical and spares post poll collation as ethical means. 3. I hear you even stating the largest party is one getting largest share of votes. Are we citizens directly electing our CM/PM. No we elect out repsentatives who in turn elect their leader in the house. How is that the percentile of votes for a party is a factor to ponder upon. This number is just a number and not any indicator. Why we keep are taking about it. 4. Finally I strongly feel as a voter I am reduced to a head count in this process of election. I feel it is high time election commission think in terms of showcasing the undestorted view and opinion of voter and avoid elections become a platform where polticians show their abilities of mix and match to suit their plans. 5. I feel the more rigid it is to maneuver for the politicians the more the will work towards acceptability of people.

Minority governments are formed every day. The Liberal party under Mr. LB Pearson formed a minority government in Ottawa and became a very successful government. In Provinces in Canada, minority governments are formed as well and with success ratio very high. If this can be done in Canada, why not in India? Let BJP from the government in Karnataka.

Why you guys are putting a morality spin on it? Its the prerogative of the governor to choose whichever he wishes to - single largest party or coalition that is most likely to form government. Whichever he wishes to choose, by doing so he won't be going against the constitution book and therefore he is entitled to either of the two choice. Now coming to reality which these guys just don't talk about- he has been chosen by the centre and therefore most likely he will give them an advantage here. You may call that "morally" wrong but its not against the law and therefore governor is entitled to take any of the two call.

JDS has more or less remained at level where they were.Biggest gainer is BJP.This clearly suggests that people of Karnataka wants BJP to rule the state.
