I left a 24 year psychologically abusive marriage. I often tell a story or say something and the facial expression of the other person tells me, "that's not normal." It takes a long time to reprocess everything. All the best to you all.

I am very proud of you women for speaking up. It is right to break the silence. We don’t want the younger generation to go through this.

My husband worked for Elmer Fernandez in the Spanish department of Providence College. I seriously am so traumatized by everything that went on during that portion of my life. We had three young children, my youngest under a year old. We only stayed there for a year in Chicago but we were associated with the IFB for several years. I seriously can’t even explain it to some people.

There is so, so much of this that is parallel to the 2x2 Church that I was born and raised in. (Also known as no name church/friends and workers/ The Truth/The Way) They also just got their first documentary on Hulu. Thanks for sharing! The more the word gets out about these abusive churches, the better!

Northern Michigan was my home for the first 15 years of my life and the IFB scene was my entire world. I was familiar in some way with every single church that was mentioned in this video, plus several more. I am so proud of these women for speaking up! The area where I live now was a Hyles hotspot Bible Belt 20-30 years ago and I cannot tell you how many horror stories my husband and I have heard as we’ve connected with people in our age demographic. We are doing what we can to support victims and survivors of the IFB movement in our local area. Thank you for the work that you all do: it is so important!

Sarah restating "Great is the harvest, but the workers are few." Suggestion: Maybe look into the peer support specialist/peer counselor area of training (training for this is usually about 40 hours). That might be a more cost-effective way to help the healing of others; they would be working with counselors with social work and related degrees who may not have extensive experience in religious trauma or IFB specifically, but once the community of counselors know that is your area of speciality, they can partner with you and refer clients to work with you and hire you to consult with/educate them.

Great suggestion - peer support groups can be so beneficial

Let's let all of the ladies speak, please.

I can assure you everyone was free to speak as much or as little as they were inclined to!

I would love to know how you were able to come to a point of accepting that it happened to you. it’s definitely a struggle for me even with all the therapy that I’ve went through including EMDR and flashbacks. Maybe because it was family members. But I still have issues believing myself.

It is a very long process and ongoing challenge to build trust in our self and claim a sense of self that is differentiated from the abusers and toxic system.

So, look. I'd love to buy one of your coffee mugs, but apparently, you only have the teaspoon size. Please consider offering a larger size!
