Mutilate gives 2 combo points, while ambush gives 1. The source of our damage is from poisons and rupture for more energy. Basicly, 2 points instead of 1 will give you a better opener so you can get that rupture and slice up faster.

I'd like to add that pooling energy before envenom is a good idea. Get 4/5 CP then pool ~70 energy before envenoming. That way you can spam 2/3 Mutilates in the time it takes envenom to elapse. Then pool ~70 energy and repeat. It gives a slight dps increase.

Ive been doing a lot of PvP as a Warrior, Paladin, & Death Knight. Got full Malv gear, and from experience, Rogues do a lot more dps than I thought. They hit hard.

Wow.. the idea that I don't need to be obsessed about getting 5CP Rupture's up meant that my DPS went through the roof - as this was easily what I was having the most trouble with, as I tried to always have 5CP finishers and this meant that sometimes Rupture fell off which is BAD ofc. the reason you want to open with mut is because of Blindside. Blindside is a free dispatch proc that comes from mut crits. therefore using a mut as an opener and when leaving vanish will have a chance to give you a free dispatch. and disptach > ambush

when you open, its ok to use mutilate. what you want to do to start is free mutilate (if you have shadow focus talent), and then a second mutilate. that will give you 4 points, and hopefully, if you crit once to give you a fifth, or you get blindside proc to use dispatch for your fifth. then use 5 combo point rupture. you could then do a cheap SnD and just refresh it with 5 star envenom. then just keep mut and dispatch maintaining SnD and rutpture

Ambush actually is the better opener in terms of raw DPS, but the difference between mutilate and ambush is very minor. If you can open with ambush, go ahead but there are times when you don't have the time to position yourself for an ambush and this is when you definately want to start with mutilate instead of wasting time when going behind the target. Hopefully I were able to help. :)

as long as you can't use Dispatch, either via Blindside procs, or when execute kicks in (meaning the target has equal or less than 35%).

If you have enough ruptures up you should Envenom instead of CT. The increased poison proc rate on your FoK spam will outdamage the CT damage. Also, you should just cycle through your targets often enough to warrant not having to FoK to keep up the poisons on your target.

I noticed something recently, if your envenom misses/ get's dodged/parried you still get the envenom buff and your combo points don't get used. Just thought It'd be good to know. :)

Muti has two seperate hits and with seal fate when you crit you get an extra combo point. So muti is more reliable to proc an extra cp

it gives you an extra mutilate if you are talent built right, shadow focus. ambush crits pretty good and does nice dmg but for getting max dps you want that free mutilate at the start, on trash single target ambush would be fine cause it is going to die really fast anyways

I think the reason their burst isn't as high is because of their ridiculous amount of CC. Just kidney shot alone is close to being OP if you have quick enough energy regen

Multilate has a chance to proc Blindslide, Ambush does not. With this in mind a Multilate+Dispatch proc does more damage per energy then Ambush does. Add to this with Shadow Focus, the fact that Multilate is 1 energy less, this pushes up its DPE aswell - it's very minor but it's 1 energy less you need to worry about and have a chance at a proc.

since 1. garrote ticks every 3 seconds, while rupture ticks every 2, and they don't stack, so energy wise rupture>garrote. 2. mutilate gives 2 combo points and you attack twice, so you get twice the chance to proc poisons and get an extra cp via Seal Fate. and 3. garrote damage is weak as fcuk.

It depends. If there is a fight with a lot of adds I would take marked for death. If it's just a single target dps fight on boss, I would take anticipation.

There are various errors in this guide. 1. You should ALWAYS use 5 CP Envenoms unless SnD is about to drop. 2. You should NEVER use Crimson Tempest, unless you have 5 CP on a mob that just died and Redirect on CD. No amount of mobs justifies CT. 3. Expertise capping is NOT optimal, and other secondary stats like haste and crit outperform Expertise well before the cap. 4. If you are rupture cleaving you need to keep all the targets poisoned for VW to work. Also, you should still Rupture cleave.

All that is just weird/wrong. Ambush gives two combo points, does more damage. The only reason you wanna use mutilate is be cause it will possibly give you the free dispatch proc, which will help make up for the less damage mutilate does over time.

It sucks, man, and we're all pissed that we're not DPS machines anymore. But rogues aren't just DPSers, you're a utility knife too. Redirect, ToT, Sap and Blind, Weakness, etc. You've got more to offer a raid than just DPS.

Really? So that's why when there are 5+ mobs and I run a 5 combo point Crimson Tempest, my DPS actually goes up about 1k/s from what it is when I am rupture cleaving. Another note if you are rupture cleaving; use fan of knives every now and then to keep poisons ticking on all your targets.

ambush hits like a wet noodle, especially as mut (low AP). if you don't steal aggro with mut crit+poison procs, you won't steal it with ambush. besides, use tricks before the pull and it's all irrelevant.

Nope, Ambush hits TOO hard, therefor it has alot of Aggro behind it, you don't wanna start off with Ambush, purely because it's incredibly easy to steal aggro from the tank on the pull.

The dps from rogues are way too low, they need to improve the damage from ambush/backstab really more to make rogue more make fun in pvp bgs. But still the abilitys are cool like shadow blades / crimson tempest , but they should really make the cooldown timer to 1 min for shadow blades.
