I feel that Elkjær gets unfairly forgotten nowadays despite being one of the best footballers of the 80's - he finished in top-3 for Ballon d'Or in 3 consecutive years and performed one of the most miraculous feats in history of Italian football, leading a small provincial club Hellas Verona to their first (and, until this day, the only one) scudetto - in the time when every Serie A club had at least one world-class star and Platini's Juventus was dominating Europe.
Elkjær was also instrumental for Denmark during their greatest ever spell - the Danish side, nicknamed "Danish Dynamite" were genuinely one of the greatest international teams in the world, seriously competing for 1984 Euros and 1986 World Cup. In a team filled with stars - experienced Morton Olsen, tireless Søren Lerby, enigmatic young prodigy Michael Laudrup, but Preben Elkjær Larsen was their brightest star throughout those years.

True story. Elkjær were shown a picture of him and Maradona by a tvjournalist. And asked is that the best player in the world? Elkjær responded "no doubt but the little guy is good to" 😂

I fell in love with Piontek's boys in the 80s: Michael Laudrup, the Olsens, Frankie Arnesen, Preben Elkjaer. It was pure delight to watch that kind of football. Sadly, that does not exist anymore. Notice how Preben does not protest or complain, does not beg the referee to get something, does not try to cheat, does not flop and roll on ground theatrically, does not cry after defeat. He wants to stay on his feet after he is fouled. He scores shoeless. There is no one like him anymore these days...

Elkjær loved a good old handwave to the ref to be fair, but it was always justified.

He always get votes to become mayor of verona. Still last election in 2019 he got 635 votes to become mayor, even though he was never on the ballot, they just write his name.

It still makes no sense how the 86 Denmark team managed to fall apart in the 2nd half against a very average Spain side, they had been the best team in the tournament by some distance until that point. Laudrup and Elkjaer were simply fire!

Overtraining and lack of water in the excess heat of Mexico in the middle of the day. The spaniards and the germans were more accustomed to big tournaments.

One of the last generation of strikers that only had one thing in mind when they got the ball. Direct line towards goal and finish! A class forward of the 80s.

I am older than Noah, and I had never heard of Mr. Preben Elkjær Larsen, which doesn't surprise me living in Australia, where English is a second language. New readers (and I use the term very lightly) would have taken one look at his name, and said "forget about it, WHAT"S NEXT?". I have never seen anyone with ball skills like this guy, that he executed with such ease. He seemed to play with the confidence you would expect of an 18-year-old going up against a team of 12-year-olds. Good stuff indeed. like/subscribe brother

Preben Elkjærn, surnommé le bison, quel magnifique joueur... C'était mon joueur préféré... J'avais 16 ans à l'époque de ce Championnat d'Europe qui se déroulait à la maison, en France et j'avoue que cette équipe du Danemark était ma préférée, elle était exceptionnelle à voir jouer, un jeu porté sur l'attaque... et les fameuses chevauchées folles d'Elkjærn.

As a Dane I heard of him first time in 1978 and have heard his voice ever since 😂 So grateful to have witnessed his climb to rise, his pinnacle career not to speak of post career subsequent sharp analysis and always lovingly embracing lightheartedness witty self-deprecating and cheeky-as-a-butcher's-dog attitude that you can only crush if you're a living human being. Long live rock and roll. Long live Preben Elkjær ❤

Some may not know of him today, but he was very highly regarded in his time. From 1984 to 1986, he finished 3rd, 2nd and 4th in the Ballon d'Or voting. He was a major star for the fantastic Danish Dynamite team of the mid 80s. And at least here in Denmark, as well as in Verona, he definitely isn't forgotten.

I know about him of course, anybody grown up in the 80s would remember him. After the first round in 1986 Denmark was a hot favourite to win in Mexico, and then they have their worse game ever against Spain.

As a young Danish boy I was such a fan of Michael Laudrup, that I resented Elkjær a little for being the bigger 'star' at the time. Later I have really come to see how great Preben Elkjær was. He should have won the Ballon D'or in 1985. He was such a striker.

Elkjær have been a commentator on Danish TV2 at the semifinal in 92 when it was going to penality there was the following conversation the other commentator "we don't have good experinence with penalities" Elkjær replys "don't worry I am sitting right here"
