This was such an informative video! I love seeing more creators making cloth diaper content and spreading awareness. I’ve used prefolds during the day and fitteds at night with both of my children from birth to potty training and it’s been such a lovely experience. Another advantage to prefolds that I didn’t hear you mention is that they can be repurposed once you’re done having kids. They make great overnight menstrual pads and cleaning rags around the house.

Good morning, this was an amazing coverage of cloth diapers! How they work, materials, styles, etc, can be very daunting and throw people off of using them! I think people also are hesitant bc they don't know which ones they're going to like and figuring out which ones work best for their baby can be an expensive trial when needing to purchase different ones to figure this all out. Once that is decided though the investment is all up front and you'll be set for the rest of the diapering stages mostly. Disposable diapers are expensive too but I think people don't see/feel such a hit to their pocketbook all at once and therefore don't truly consider going cloth. Obviously the ease of disposables is a boost to new parents and having to wash cloth diapers is a bit scary, time consuming and messy sometimes so this deters many. On another note, if your child goes to daycare some of them won't consider doing cloth diapering either. HERE'S THE BOTTOM LINE FOR ME... Even if you only have 1 or 2 cloth diapers and you use those in repetition with disposables, you're helping the environment a load bc that's way fewer disposables in the long run. One doesn't have to be ALL OR NOTHING in this adventure of diapering! Every little bit helps! Just my opinions on this. Sorry, got a bit carried away! 😅

I’ve used pocket nappies for my little girl and been happy with them. She has just started to go potty now so now we are on a new journey. When I started with the cloth nappies I was so confused so really good video for anyone starter there cloth nappy journey😊

I’m just thinking of switching to pocket nappies for my 19mo as she’s developed allergies to disposables! Do you think it’s too late… what are you doing now that potty training? My girl is just starting some potty training

My mother used prefold nappies. Nappy pins and a liner were used to hold it all together. That was over 50 years ago in Sydney, Australia.

I cloth diapered all 3 of my girls. I had a wide variety, like you I've collected them along the way. AI2 was probably my favourite. Although I use pockets now in the carseat as "special car pants". I put them overtop of my youngest pants just to save the carseat from potential accidents! I used cloth wipes too and loved them. I tell everyone even if you don't use cloth diapers, cloth wipes work 100% better than disposables! I actually just listed my whole collection on marketplace. Another good thing about cloth diapers is their resale value!

I find velcro a nightmare as a pet owner, always gets gummed up with fur. Also, I never used liners with prefolds. I probably change baby more often than normal as I do some EC/baby led potty training, but I actually never had an issue with nappy rash etc without a stay-dry liner.

I'm going to be using Disana Tie Nappies for my son, since they are organic and can be used literally from birth through potty training. I'm pairing them with wool paints/shorts, which will double as his clothes. It is pretty much the cheapest solution I have found without using plastic covers. Loving these videos! Ty!

Brilliant, wish i had seen this earlier. I bought pocket cloth nappies before bub was born but only started using them at around 8mo because I felt so intimidated about sizing and washing. It would be great if you could do a video in the series about washing and sanitising nappies.

That was such an informative video! I didn't realised I've watched for half an hour. Don't have a Baby yet, but definitely want to try cloth nappies. Because personally I prefer cloth pads, not just because of the environment, but how they feel, and so might my baby. :)

My mom didn't cloth diaper us, but those pre folds were all over the house! Any time we needed something absorbent, cleaning rag, spit up rag, etc, always a cloth diaper!

I use cloth diapers but not the pre folds, I got some gifted and had no idea what to use the for... until I needed a burp cloth. Never getting those thin burp clothes again.😂

I love to have just the covers, because in a pinch you can use anything absorbent. I used to watch my sobs half sister while her mum worked, after the kids' dad left her and left the state. There was a period when she was only putting one diaper in the bag to bring her home in. I know she was struggling to adjust, she knew I had cloth, so I used them. I needed to watch her on a day normally didn't, and didn't have enough inserts. Two of her diaper changes, I folded up some towel scraps and old t-shirts 😅. As a Doula, I give two covers to all my clients in case they run out of diapers. Most of my clients are very low income, and I take payment in trade of goods and services.

Just to add to the final thoughts section - there may be a nappy library in your area to try without having to buy! (and sling libraries are a thing too) Some online sellers of cloth nappies also offer "renting" bundles of nappies, for giving it a try without having the commit to keeping them, to try out the different options to see what works best for you, or even to rent smaller newborn sizes that your baby will only need for the first couple of months before buying a one-size stash.

My fav is pockey diapers, it was the first and only style i tried but loved it right away. I have swapped from the fleece lined to the athletic wicking jersey (AWJ) for my pocket diapers though. Also the company i buy fron has a larger pocket opening making it easier for the inserts to come out during wash (I remove by hand but if I forget its handy). I also have a bunch of toddler size fitted diapers, just need to buy covers for them. I got them off a local Buy Nothing group so they do need a bit of work (deep clean and elastics need replacing). But since cloth diapering is usually expensive, to start, I don't mind putting in the work if it means getting a good size lot for free.

I love the "La petite ourse" pocket diapers with the double openings and double elastics, which means I don't have to remove the insert. Just put the whole thing in the wash. :D

I love my fitted and pre fold diapers! I use Cloth eez, which is cotton. I really enjoyed the video and i don’t like pockets either. I’d recommend boingo fastners to those using prefold diapers and snappies for fitteds.

My sister bought 2nd hand nappies here in the states and it was a learning curve getting them leak proof because my niece was rather skinny. Disposable fit her better but they were so expensive which is why we went the cloth route. Thanks for showing the pros and cons of each. Looks like they have improved over the years

My mum used prefolds with me and my siblings when we were babies and she still has them and uses them as cleaning rags now- I'm the youngest and I'm 27 so they're very longwearing 😂

My favorite cloth diaper was the bum genius one size pocket diaper after the newborn stage (they didn’t fit when she was a newborn) I also like the elemental bamboo! I have medium hard water so the microfiber cloths would get stinky pretty quick so I used green mountain yellow edge prefolds to stuff the pockets and loved that! I played around with too many types but did have fun! I like fitted diapers when she was a newborn and loved the thirsties covers for them! I also got preemie prefolds and I use them as panty liners for myself for my slight leakage after giving birth! They’re much comfier than disposable panty liners and more absorbent!

Just a little piece of advice with prefolds. Don't get Gerber prefolds. They aren't really meant to be diapers at this point. They're very cheaply made, very thin, not very absorbent, and just don't work well as diapers. They're great burp cloths, though! I also used them to dry my son's hair for a long time. Another thing to remember about prefolds is that you can trifold them and put them in a pocket. I love using prefolds in pockets! Just not the Gerber ones...

Yes Gerber ones are burp clothes or cleaning clothes only! I loved using prefolds to stuff pockets since I have medium hard water and the microfiber stuffers got stinky real quick and I did have that problem with cotton prefolds!

@@karbear26 amen! Have you ever looked at a Gerber prefold package? Some of them say something along the lines of "Top choice for: Crafting, cleaning," and a bunch of other things, but "diapering" is nowhere on the list 🤣.

Thanks for the video! Maybe if you have time it might be worthwhile to make a tutorial on how to make the pre-fold nappy - what sorts of materials to use, what size to make it etc. since I remember you had some tutorials on making reusable menstrual pads a while ago :)

Hi, I want to add one more type: I have tried several types and finally chose some tie on nappies (e.g. by Disana). Cut off the ties, though, and used snappies instead. You need to combine with absorbent layer and cover. But for me, the greatest advantage was that you can tightly tie them to every size or shape of the baby. No other cloth (or disposable!) nappy has worked so leakproof. Cheap, dry quickly, and you won’t need several sizes. If you like the prefolds, you might love the tie ons.

Instead of prefolds, I used cotton flats. Prefolds are made by sewing layers of flats together. They practically dry out in 1-2 hours under the summer sun. The speed is useful in winter. With 30 flats and 6 covers, we only had to wash 2 loads a week. Nowadays I put the potty chair on a cotton flat to catch splashes. They can be used as rags and towels too. So versatile and cheap, it’s worth the learning curve. Funny thing is I only bought 10 flats, and the other 20 flats were given to us by relatives who use them as burp clothes.

I love pocket diapers. I feel like my LO stays so much drier. I hate feeling like she's sitting on a wet liner. The pockets I have (alvababy) do a great job wicking moisture away and dirty poo diapers are a breeze to clean. We pretty much never have a blowout. I also really find stuffing diapers kind of relaxing.

I loved close pop in newborn then “normal” size for couple of months then straight to Pockets 5-6months up to now 22 months and nearing potty training soon

Thank you for the video! I have tried a number of options now and I keep having the same problem. If you look at the seam at the legs from the side, the fleece lining on the inside is sewn together with the waterproof lining at the exact same level. So, whenever my baby wets his nappy, the fleece lining gets wet up to the seam. The seam touches the clothing, therefore everything leaks. Does anyone know how to deal with this problem? Bryony seems to have shown nappies with the exact same seam type but she did not mention any issues. I have also tried having just a waterproof shell with a few pieces of lining within, but it seems that certain movements of the baby put pressure on the lining, which starts leaking and the waterproof shell appears to not be so waterproof anymore. I am confused how to solve this.

All in 2s with Poop Liners are my gold standard for diapering. Poop liners are something to throw away. I like to think in the future, we will find a way to dispose liners so that we can make soil or something. ...*sigh*

Babies tend to have legs in "froggy" position so using cloth doesn't put the legs/hip in an unnatural position

Just want to point out you don't have to use a liner in diapers if you don't want to. If baby has a wetness sensitivity or it is easier for you to use them, sure go ahead.
