Busey doesn't dodge the blade not only because that scene is in slow motion, but also because he can't see through three slabs of beef. He has no idea where or when then attack is coming. The idea here is not to just retread the first film with a big, brute force soldier taking on the Predator in foreign territory. Mike has the home team advantage this time. He's not a brute. He's a thinker. He's street smart. You don't need to be strong to beat the Predator, and in fact, strength didn't help Arnold all that much, as no human is a physical match for them. So Glover is perfect here as it turns the whole film into something unique and expands on the mythology of the Predators seeking a unique and worthy hunt. This is also one of the reasons Prey works so well. It's decidedly not a retread on the original concept, but a chapter in the the overall simple premise of what the Predators are.

On a moving subway, Jerry had a hand gun, it was dark and the predator was invisible. 3. As a human male, what did Arnold do, that Danny couldn't? The cop did better than the soldier when going hand to hand. 4. You've seen enough movies to know they use slow motion to indication how fast something is moving. They wanted us to see the effects of that disc. 5. You totally missed the alien skull on the display wall. This is the movie that teased the alien vs predator for the first time. Predators are about the challenge and glory but they adhere to a code as you saw with the pregnant cop, the unarmed people and the victor of the battle. If you're not a threat or a worthy opponent they'll basically pass you by because there's no self preservation or glory in it for them. Leona's pregnancy is significant because that's why the Predator let her live. He's a hunter, and he doesn't kill a pregnant "doe" to put it in more human terms. I do agree I wanted more of her in the movie, though. Mike is a survivor. He's a different type of combatant. He uses his brain and wields the Predator tech against it. But much like Dutch, he doesn't take down the Yautja with strength, but by having the right gear, mindset and a knack for warfare. He takes hits, he fails, he faces his fear and he overcomes, earning the respect of the Predators by narrowly taking down one of their own. Yes, if he had faced the others, he would have died. His bravado was really only that. He knew he was screwed and wasn't stupid enough to think he'd win, but he might as well get one last verbal jab in. "Who's next?" was him flipping them off before they killed him, not arrogance. Danny Glover was the perfect guy for this role. As for Jerry, I think you misread him. He's obnoxious and a brash, but honestly, he's a standup guy who does his part as one of the team and even gives his life to protect his partners and innocents. The fact that he couldn't hurt the Predator was due to the fact that he's firing a gun in the dark at an invisible opponent. Even Mac in the first movie only managed to graze the Predator with both a machine gun and minigun in broad daylight. There's some context you might miss in this. While the movie takes place in '97, it came out in 1990. It's actually a near-future satire in a lot of respects. The "Hard Core" segments are inspired by the real life tabloid show Hard Copy, a sensationalist journalism program that was a thing in the late 80s and 90s as well as trash tv celebrities like Morton Downey Jr. The drug war presented in this movie was a satire of the war on drugs and escalating gang violence during that same time. If you lived through the era, there's an underlying sense of dark humor to this movie.

This was a good sequel with a great cast and story. Action, violence and suspense off the charts. The 2nd film for Glover & Busey after Lethal Weapon. The late Kevin Peter Hall as The Predator (2 films in a row) for one last time. The Alien and Predator film franchises are separate. Alien is set in the deep future. Predator takes place in any era with the possibility of the Xenomorph's existence. The Xenomorph skull reveal was magnificent and the pistol revealed so much of how long the Predators have been around. Alien and Predator were being published as standalone comics from Dark Horse inc. Then came the original Alien vs. Predator crossover, first existing as comics and novels before it's film transition. You had to watch AvP (2004) as the follow-up film and is worth the watch. But you'll definitely enjoy 2010's PREDATORS from producer Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn) as an new story and also paying homage to the 1987 original.

I thought the cast was great. Gary Busey’s “Lions and tigers and bears…oh my!” I’ve always liked how this one is so different from the first movie. So many sequels in the 80’s and early 90’s were retreads of the first movie. The pistol was his trophy for besting the Predator. It’s believable because Danny Glover only beats the Predator using its own weapon. As for taking them on, I think it was resignation, not enthusiasm. What choice did he have? Leona is spared by the Predator because she was pregnant, which is why it’s mentioned.
@everlastingpass1on Жыл бұрын
I think they included that the female cop was pregnant to reinforce the Predator's code. It won't kill an unarmed combatant, and the unborn life was unarmed. Which is why the Predator ended up not taking the life of female cop once it realised that.

According to my info, they wanted Ahnold back for this sequel, offered him 17 million, but he said "the timing wasn't right," so they rewrote it into a sort of ensemble cast. I think Glover is okay and relatable. Also, funny you should mention Rambo. The general Mexico plot for Rambo 5 was in development way back when they did part 4, and they finally made it, but there was also an alternative script where the Government creates and weaponizes a genetically-altered creature, it (of course) goes rogue, and they send in Rambo to clean up the mess. I'm glad they never greenlit that.

The comic book this film took heavy inspiration from (Predator: Concrete Jungle) had two NYPD detectives as leads, the main lead was John Schaefer (brother of Dutch Schaefer/Arnold), and the task force was headed by General Philips (the guy who gives Arnold's team the mission in Predator). For the movie they probably felt it was too far fetched the cop was Dutch's brother, so Arnold returning as Dutch was going to play the General Philips role as task force lead (which eventually became Keyes played by Gary Busey, after Arnold didn't sign up.)

Disagree with your 'miscast' assessment; have never heard anyone else make this criticism. You could call it a plot/script issue if you don't think a mere cop can beat a Predator, but why is it that Danny Glover is 'miscast'? He did just fine, and as others have said, it's more of a relatable everyman aspect although he still has skills from being a cop, which you're downplaying. Plus, he ended up beating an overconfident Predator (which is reasonable, also got overconfident vs Arnold) who got into melee range and Glover won only by using its own technology/weapon to beat it.

There are no humans that are a physical match for a Predator. The whole point of the movies is that it is THE MIND, reason, clear thinking, orientation to reality and a knowledge of how to survive in our surroundings, that allows the one that has the highest level of these attributes to defeat a Predator. The movies are a concretization of the philosophical fact "the human mind is our basic means of survival". The first film does a clearer job of this theme, but this sequel is pretty close too. The film is not quite as good as the original Predator, but then that was the best action movie of all time.

On PS4 there is a game called "Ghost Recon Wildlands". It's about a special unit fighting a drug cartel in Bolivia. There is a mission where you (out of the blue) encounter a Predator. I was so hyped when the Predator theme was starting. That was awesome 😊.

The novelization is great showing the Predator's perspective of things. Best is how it points out the final scene of them tossing Hartigan the old pistol can be read two ways: Is it a show of respect by sharing the trophy of a worthy foe? Or is the Predators warning humanity "you see this ancient piece of weaponry? This is what you are to us. Remember that."

Also it points to the history of the predators hunting on earth in the past and that they will be back which Glovers character alludes to stating that “you’ll get your chance “ to the black ops guy at the end.

RIP Bill Paxton. The only man to be killed by the Alien, Terminator, and the Predator. This movie is total schlock but it's super-fun and ridiculous! Predator 1 is a great movie by all accounts, but I think I might actually enjoy this one more precisely BECAUSE it's so silly and over-the-top!

On the train Jerry and the others used pistols. Some of high caliber, but not enough. Mike was using a high caliber shotgun that could cut off a person's arm and yet the wounds were not deep enough to kill the predator. They are very sturdy.
@Josh-GT Жыл бұрын
Jerry's shots weren't effective because he was shooting a smaller caliber pistol. Mike temporarily stunned the predator because he was shooting much larger slugs out of 12 gauge shotgun..

At 30:40. The predator was going to kill her but the reason he didn't is because she was pregnant.

I think that Leona's pregnancy is the reason why the Predator didn't kill her.

Clearly Danny Glover is having a lot of fun playing a cop who's the complete opposite of Murtaugh. One of my favorite sequels, along with two others from 1990, Robocop 2, and Gremlins 2.

Kevin Peter Hall played the Predator in Predator 1 and 2. He also played Harry in Harry and the Hendersons. He was 7'2'' and by all accounts a wonderful guy. He had a speaking role in the TV show Misfits of Science, where he played someone who could shrink. Unfortunately he died in 1991 from an AIDS-infected blood transfusion.

The last third of this movie is just one surreal chase fight where you almost feel like you're drunk or high! One thing to note, this movie came out in 1991 so when they set it in 1997 it was "in the future". They didn't do a lot to sell this, added some extra scopes and pieces to the guns to make them look a bit more futuristic. And the subway they are on was under construction at the time. The predator in this one has a lot more gadgets, in some ways too many. The reason Jerry couldn't hit the creature in the subway is 1) firing in the dark 2) The invisibility screen means he can't really aim at anything other than a vague shape, and 3) His pistol had a lot less power than Mike's shotgun. As is, he DOES hit it a few times. Once on the shoulder, you see the sparks fly from where he hit the armor.

Obviously Predator was a classic but Predator 2 is definitely an underrated film. Like most I initially thought "No Arnold? Not good!" but over time I came to appreciate this as a solid action flick and liked the direction it took after re-watching it later. Really solid cast IMO. I really liked the way this film took the "Die Hard" approach by making the hero an "every man" not the typical 80's muscle bound cartoon character. The audience can relate to the struggle of all the cast especially Glover.

Funny thing was the film was made in 92 but takes place in LA of '97, but in the real LA of '97 there was a bank robbery gone wrong where two crooks were heavily armed with machine guns and grenades (not sure about the grenades) and wore full body armor and then doubled up on the armor just to be safe. It took several hours and a trip to a local gun store for the police to get the equipment they needed to put an end to the situation. Unfortunately, several blocks had to be evacuated due to stray gunfire and the men were constantly on the move, sometimes in different directions. The news coverage was live from helicopters and on the ground. This was before the rules on live footage was put into place, so as a young man (I was 21 at the time) this was pretty horrific and reminded me of the opening scenes of Predator 2.

The Predator(s) or "Yautja" as they're called in the comics and novels are a very Honorable race. They're a highly advanced species who live for the hunt of hard to kill creatures. They, also, praise honorable fighting during hunts which is why Danny Glover was spared at the end of the movie. The elder, who likely oversaw this hunt, gifted the victor of the fight (Danny Glover) with a weapon as is tradition among the "Yautja." In the comics there was a human woman who sided with the Predator and lived among them. She went on hunts and challenged predators to duels.

How did he beat the Predator? Simple, the same way the girl beat him in Prey, he out smarted it. Its not always about big muscles. He used the most important muscle, his brain. This sequel doesn't get the credit it deserves. I loved the Easter egg with the Alien skull plus there's another connection in it. P2 actually helped propell the Predator and Alien franchises. If there's a great sequel to the 1st Predator, its this one.

In case nobody's said it yet, Keven Peter Hall is the guy in the Predator suit, in this movie and the first one -- he died after this one so this is his last. IMHO opinion his performance is what really made these movies. He was incredible. Anyways, I'm so glad you're watching this before Prey. While it isn't essential, you'll get more out of it.

I lived in LA in the 90s in a neighborly area and even there crazy shit occasionally happened. Woke up to a swat team plus a helicopter going in two houses down the road once. Add the riots, the gangs and the drugs to it and basically every movie portrayed LA going down and self destruct in a spiral of violence. Obviously didn't happen.
@thirteeneighteenfive Жыл бұрын
I know it's a little counter intuitive, but you can't really beat a Predator by being big and strong. The best way to defeat them consistently demonstrated is by outsmarting them and turning their advatages and technology against them. Which is why I love that old meme that Kevin from the Home Alone movies could take out a predator.
