Serum bicarbonate decreases during pregnancy. Increased minute volume would lead to a respiratory alkalosis, and by increasing bicarbonate, that would generate a metabolic alkalosis.

I think she said increased secretion of bicarbonate, so technically it decreases, since more of it is excreted from the body

Hello. Can you do a guide on Pregnancy Physiology Changes in Gastrointestinal tract. I really didn't understand on your other video about the changes in pregnancy because it was only explain briefly plus the video also mix in other changes. There are some other video/guide that I saw online about the GIT changes in pregnancy but they didn't specifi about the changes, they only talked on what is the changes. Also can you also do other guide on the other changes like the GUT, Cardiovascular and Hormon Changes during prenancy. That can really help us out here. Please..... Help me.!!! Please!!

I think the last khan pregnancy video said that BP goes up because of the increased blood volume. I thought that was incorrect. I may have misheard, tho.

"The body responds to that decrease in CO2, a decrease in an acid, by increasing the secretion of bicarbonate, a base" Am I missing something here? Why are we secreting more bicarb when the mother is already slightly more basic from the loss of CO2?
@rayayalmaz9403
@rayayalmaz9403 4 жыл бұрын
Because Co2 helps to link H+ ions during metabolic acidosis and transfom into carbonic acid H2co3- and this later gives back h2o and co2 for further process, now by loosing co2 we depend on bicarb Hco3- to fix H+ ions to form co2 again and H2o.

why bicarb secretion will increase? Low Co2 is already making the blood more alkaline
@c.3263
@c.3263 7 жыл бұрын
Secreting bicarb through the kidneys is the compensation mechanism to try to make the blood more acidic If you were to release more H ions you would in fact be making the blood even more alkalotic, shifting it further away from pH 7.4

Chaz Hernandez so it should be excretion of Bicarb? I think the explanation makes it seem like there is retention of bicarb So just to be clear, it is retention of H and excretion of HCO3 ?

First of all, I'm not entirely sure who is this supposed to be for, but I think it's a bit too dumbed down for the meds. Example on the very beggining, blood volume increases, it is not specified how (Some might be confused why the hemoglobin levels drop below anemia threshold). Not to be overly critical, the video is very educational and thank you for the effort, guess I could have mentioned that at the start :)

This, I think, is best for high schoolers or people taking an overview course. It's informing people and touching on multiple topics/areas, leaving areas of interests open examination.

This is not geared towards medical students but for pre-medical students studying for the MCAT. So details like you mentioned, that even though RBC volume and number increase due to increased erythropoietin release from the kidneys. The increase in plasma volume is greater than hemoglobin volume and number causing physiological anemia. However, I feel those details are given in any medical or other health care professional lecture, but this provides an excellent framework to understand the key concepts so you can explore the more subtle but clinically relevant details for yourself.

I definitely did not learn any of this in high school, nor did I learn it in undergrad (although my major was biomedical engineering). I am just learning this in med now 🙈.

Of course, even in Europe we study this during Gyn/Obs, which kind of proves my point. It is too detailed for the high schoolers, no layman studies pregnancy physiology at this level, yet it is underwhelming for health workers. I wasn't trying to be negative, just thought that if this was a bit more detailed, it would have saved me hours of studying :D
