I feel like people just find a way to criticize moms no matter what they do. Excercise or no excercise, formula or breastfeeding, working or stay-at-home, screen time or no screen time. There's nothing we can do right, and EVERYONE seem to have an opinion about it and feel no inhibitions to express it publicly

It's coz pregnant women are given very little independence, they almost become property of their community, expected to act as perfect baby making machines otherwise they're awful terrible mothers. Most women aren't told that you can actually drink during pregnancy in small amounts because women aren't trusted to make the right decisions. It's the same with the exercising and sex, so many people are told not to because women aren't trusted. It's all rooted in misogyny, if it's not your baby and you're not their doctor, it's not your problem, leave pregnant women alone

I wonder if that's part of where the old-school medical ideas around pregnancy came from. The idea that women are fragile really only applied to wealthier women in the past, women who could afford servants. Working class women were busy getting shit done, and unsurprisingly, were also less likely to have a doctor care for them during pregnancy or delivery.

My sister miscarried her first child. She went through a period where she wondered what she did wrong. The answer was nothing. But people judge. People will assume that when you miscarry it’s your fault. I nearly cried when Shawn mentioned that someone stated she’d lose her daughter just like she miscarried her first baby.

People are stupid, ignorant, and even horrible. My heart goes out to your sister and I hope she’s doing better. The same thing happened to an aunt. Sadly everything in nature is flawed in some way. Even if we do everything as perfectly as we can, there is always a chance that an accident can occur in our bodies and affect the baby 😔

I worked out pretty intensely 5- 6 days a week up until the day I gave birth and had no complications or issues. I felt amazing and strong being pregnant, no aches or pains. My baby was born a normal healthy weight with no issues. I’m going to do it again during my next pregnancy. I shared my journey on my Instagram and only had one person say something negative towards the end of my pregnancy. Most people were supportive.

@emmamemma4162
@emmamemma4162 3 жыл бұрын
@@caribbean9829 There's not one correct answer to this question. Depending on what happened to one's body during the pregnancy and delivery we could be talking days, weeks, or months before a person is ready to work out. For some people it is appropriate to start doing light pelvic floor exercises the day after delivery, but hold off on regular abdominal exercises until the linea alba is back to normal. Going for short walks is usually OK in the first weeks, but make sure to increase distance and speed gradually. Before hitting the weights, try some easy exercises like pulling the shoulders down and back, or cat/cow on all four. In the postpartum exercise classes I run, people will start coming to class between 6 weeks and 6 months after delivery.

There's a perception out there that pregnant females are public property. Strangers will touch pregnant bellies; give totally unsolicited advice on extremely personal and intimate subjects; speak for pregnant women; treat pregnant female like they're fragile and need protection. If a pregnant female gets upset about a stranger assaulting her; giving her unsolicited advice; treating her like she's fragile and breakable and has no idea what she's talking about/doing, strangers have become very upset and offended and outraged.

Too many woman have heard the very generalized guideline of not lifting more than 25 lbs while pregnant. This advice is for the average inactive woman. They don’t consider the fact that active women have the muscle tone and stamina to do more without causing unnecessary stress to the body. I hate seeing mothers being shamed for doing something that is actually healthier for both her and her baby. Don’t try going for any personal records, but you certainly don’t need to stop doing what your body is already used to.

There's this weird double standard about exercise in pregnancy that I see in a lot of people. On one hand, everyone talks about how women "in the good ol' days" worked super hard the whole time and gave birth on the field like no big deal, while simultaneously shaming anyone who does as much as a squat while pregnant these days. It's weird, but I am determined to be s fit as possible now, so that when I decide to have a kid I can continue being active even in pregnancy (because honestly, not doing anything for 9 months would freak me out). While I admire her perspective of "people are just so protective of children", the criticism she got was just so wrong. When society sees a pregnant person, they just see the unborn child and not the mother. Because of this, people feel it's right to judge pregnant people about almost anything they do, especially if the action is in part to keep the mother healthy (for example, exercise, taking medications in pregnancy, working/not working, etc.). They seem to forget that the mother has needs too, but is also the one whose most protective of the unborn child. So leave mothers alone and keep your advice/criticism to yourself.

As a former (amateur) rock climber, I'm curious about how far into your pregnancy you were able to climb. The position of the developing fetus (and associated weight) on the front of your midsection seems like it would not only destroy your balance, but prevent you from keeping close enough to the face/wall/whatever to climb as usual.

My mom was a letter carrier while she was pregnant with me. She said I didn't kick much because I was regularly being moved around with her as she delivered mail. I apparently kicked to Beatles music at a music festival. Towards the end of her pregnancy she would case routes for other people but not deliver them. I was born on her day off, which then became her maternity leave, healthy weight, no complications. She said she only had pregnancy cravings once, for chocolate.

I noticed with both my pregnancies my babies wouldn't really kick much when I was moving around but then when I was sitting still they would move around and kick. My husband family is chinese and while they would be considered progressive his mom doesn't want me lifting weights while pregnant, but I keep telling him explain to her I cant just stop exercising I gain weight very easily and would quickly become overweight plus I'm asthmatic not exercising plus extra weight gain could make me high risk and probably miscarriage or have much harder pregnancy because of the excess stress of struggling to breathe and get oxygen and just my body losing so much mobility . I already experienced how bad my body felt with extra weight and not being able to exercise like I used to cuz my legs hurt while I was on a new asthma medicine and I blew up 40 pounds. It was very uncomfortable and I couldn't breathe well. I would be winded and my back hurting just from walking i and wasnt breathing correctly while I slept. I'm not going thru that again while pregnant I'm going to keep working out and lifting just modify my routine as I see fit. I'm also a personal trainer so I don't know why they wont listen to me on this. That's family for you they don't listen until it comes from a different person's mouth.

I am SO HAPPY to see you addressing this! A few weeks ago I saw a KZbin short video of a professional ballerina, she's actually a prima at the NYC ballet, doing a series of fouettes during a class while 8 months pregnant. For anyone who doesn't know what fouettes are, it's a type of turn in ballet where your supporting/balancing leg propels you up and down on pointe while the other leg sort of helps whip you around in your turn, so when you're down the exterior leg is extended out in front of your body and as you rise up on pointe you pull it in toward your body and that's how you turn. These are done in rapid succession and they are not easy! Anyway, this woman was getting so much criticism for doing this while pregnant! And all I could think was that she obviously has a doctor and MDJ should address this!!!! She wouldn't be doing it if it weren't safe. Plus it was only a class, not a rehearsal for a performance! All my dance teachers and my own sister continued to dance throughout their pregnancies. It's not a disability, for crying out loud!

I always find it amazing that in a country where obesity is running rampant, to the point people are losing weight specifically to get pregnant, it’s the fit mom’s people seem up in arms about. It’s almost like some people are jealous or projecting. Of course being fit isn’t a virtue, you can be reckless and fit, but if your aren’t dolling out your sage “advice” to that pregnant person eating their third slice of cake, you’re probably insincere in your concern. *Also probably don’t give unsolicited advice to strangers.

Even though I was an elite dancer and dance teacher, as soon as I became pregnant, I stopped almost everythinggg because I’m sooo prone to injury and didn’t want to be pregnant and injured. 6 months prior to becoming pregnant I dislocated my elbow... my hand touched my elbow after bending the complete wrong way, while doing a front walkover, which is not a skill that really ever results in dislocating an elbow. Very rare and weird. Instead, I did a lottt of walking and some stretching. But since I know my own body so well, I knew what I had to do. If I wasn’t so prone to injury I would have loved to keep up my workouts. My little girl is almost a year and a half, and I’m just getting back into building back strength and flexibility. I still don’t want to be injured until she doesn’t need to me to hold her so much. Every body is different, every pregnancy is different. I probably will do the same thing next pregnancy only because of how easily I get injured.

I loved power walking but had to switch to lap swimming, only, at seven months-after my knee gave out and I fell stomach first into a rock garden. I was still able to sing and do choreography (somewhat modified) in a musical production I was in, which ended two weeks before my due date. I swam laps the day I went into labor. My husband commented, the night my baby was born, on how energetic and rested I looked.

I do feel like there is a big misconception that the biggest risk of exercise in pregnancy is to the baby which is not true. The risk is more for the pregnant person, but, as discussed, the benefits FAR outweigh the risks if you listen to your body. Just like Shawn I felt way better when I exercised, especially in the 3rd trimester!

Regardless, mental health is very separate from suicide. I seriously considered suicide four years ago. Needless to say, it had nothing to do with my my mom or dad’s parenting and everything to do with my depression due to a sexual assault. Anyway, please do not listen to such horrific commentary. Your child is watching over you 🙏🏼 and I’m sure wouldn’t want you to stress over people whom in the long run DONT matter.

I feel like this is a chronic issue. Both during pregnancy and in actual child rearing people really do love to weigh in and say things like “you’ll cause a miscarriage if you...” or “you’ll mess up your children if you...” and it’s just awful. There’s so much self doubt of if you’re doing good enough in both situations it’s really just cruel to do that to parents.

I had to stop exercising during my first trimester because i was too nauseous and weak to get out of bed, and then as soon as I started to get active again during my second trimester, I developed a subchorionic hemorrhage. I've since healed and have been given the go ahead by my doctor to work out again, but I am still SO SCARED. I'll be 33 weeks in a few days. I lost my previous baby after delivering at 26 weeks and this time around I had placenta previa. Even though I've been on pelvic rest since 16 weeks, my doctor still approved me to work out (on my stationary bike, I'm sure had I asked about running that would've not been a good idea). I've been too scared to actually work out, but I definitely encourage everyone to ask their OB just like MDJ said. I think one ironic thing is people will encourage their friends to "eat for two" more than they will encourage them to exercise and obesity in pregnancy definitely has it's own risks!

I don't know why *anyone* would be anti-exercise-in-pregnancy and give her so much crap about that. That's really odd to me. Like, I had complications due to "exercise," it was really my job, but it was a very physical job, waitressing in a busy restaurant - and I still don't think there's anything wrong with exercising or working while pregnant. I don't know why that happened to me, I was having severely painful contractions for hours, and hours, and hours every time I'd go to work at around 25-30 weeks, so I quit my job and it stopped after that. So for me, it was obvious that level of activity was potentially dangerous for my baby, and I think that's probably the case for almost everyone. If you're doing too much, your body WILL warn you. So I'd absolutely keep doing any level of activity you did before as long as you're doctor gives you the okay.

This is so empowering and informative! I had many pple, well-meaning family included, "warn" me and criticize me for exercising during pregnancy. Understandably, they were trying to look out for me and the health of my baby but it often felt that they were more concerned about my unborn child than about me and my health (mental health included... I rely heavily on exercise for mental health.) It is nice to know that if I get pregnant again, I can listen to myself and my doctor and feel empowered that I know what I am doing. Thanks for a great video with an exceptional athlete!

My OB has been so supportive and actually has a lot of the same recommendations as you! I was kind of afraid that she would be pretty old school and give me a lot of limitations since she's been doing this for a long time but she has been so helpful and supportive of knowing what I can and can't do and is huge on listening to your body! I absolutely love your videos and all the information you share!

Although I don’t recommend, I did an ultra marathon in my first trimester 😅 it was a personal best. I’ve been running for years though and was training all year for this race, only to find out 3 weeks before that I was pregnant. I am registered for a half marathon next week at 31 weeks, wish me luck! (I’ll obvs play by ear and walk as much as I need to, and will stop if needed)

@@samterry1062 thanks, the half marathon went well! Glad I finished it. For my ultra in my first trimester, I signed up for the 100km way before I knew I was pregnant. I didn’t want to push myself too hard but I still wanted to run what I could, so I told myself I would run the first 21.1km then walk till I got time cut off. In the end, finished 65km.

This is my third pregnancy, and it’s with twins. My first one, I did probably push myself too hard and didn’t gain weight like my doctor wanted. My second I felt like I knew where to modify as I got heavier but was consistent in exercising and felt great the whole way. The twins have definitely made me scale waaaay back. (And having 2 toddlers keeps me plenty active). I do what I can to keep my back strong to avoid pain. My mom had twins and she told me “my doctor said not to vacuum.” And I said “that was 26 years ago.” Have to work with the information you have. And you know your body!

I was working with a trainer prior to getting pregnant and would have continued but had horrible morning sickness until about 18 weeks, so I stopped...then COVID hit and the gym closed. Once I started to feel better, I walked as much as I could, did yoga, and lifted weights at home. I got comments from people, but I didn’t care because I had talked at length about it (several times) with my doctor.

After watching a lot of your videos a few months ago i finally decided to make myself on obgyn appointment to figure out why i wasnt getting periods and why i hadnt been able to get pregnant. This is something id been dealing with since puberty (the no period thing at least) and my pcp had never been able to figure out, i was just put on birth control and while it worked, when i stopped my BC to try and conceive, they completely went away again. It took my obgyn 2 appointments and 1 ultrasound to find what my pcp couldn't in 10 years with 3 ultrasounds. Ive been officially diagnosed with PCOS and im finally on the road to managing it, hopefully by next year my cycle will be back and i'll be able to start my family. I really cant thank you enough for making the content you do. I was terrified of seeing an obgyn and watching your videos helped me get over that and get help and finally an answer. I cried the moment i got back in the car because i was so happy to finally know what was wrong and have a path towards getting healthy again.

This is such an important message!!! Exercise is 100% okay, if you’re okay. I was the extreme outlier where I was on bed rest because my lupus was very aggressive against my uterus....lol. But so many of my clients (I’m a massage therapist) are active before during and after pregnancy! It’s so great to see this being talked about!!!💖💖💖💖💖💖😁😁

I have been actively working out for 6-7 days a week for about 4 years now. I went on a weightloss journey because I was overweight and I wanted a baby but I didn't want to add weight to my already overweight body. I reached my goal weight a year and a half in and continued to just keep myself healthy and build muscle from there. I got pregnant (which was the goal) and kept working out. I got cleared from my doctor and did everything right and I lost her at at 16 weeks. When I told some of my immediate family I got asked "What did you lift?" People said I caused it because I didn't stop working out. So now I'm actively trying again and I WILL NOT STOP WORKING OUT. I solved the problem. The people who said harmful things are just no longer a part of my life or they are just loved from a distance. Thank you for this!

I did a positive pregnancy test today! Since my club put team practices on hold last autumn due to covid, I didn't feel like working out on my own at all for the rest of the year. At the start of this year I decided I need to be in shape for both myself and for our family planning reasons, and also so that I could be in shape when my team can get back to practicing and competing. I've been working out daily and feeling so good and I want to continue this into the pregnancy as long as possible.
