Glad to see you advocate a little freer interpretation of rhythms here. So many people think Bach should be played metronomically. Contemporaneous writing talks about how Bach encouraged his students to play his music very freely. CPE Bach talked about how important rubato was to evoking emotion in music. I have not played that suite in years, but I always loved the Prelude and the Gigue.

I love this format where you focus on interpretation and musical ideas (as opposed to fingerings and technical "how to play"). Having practiced this piece for a couple of months now, I can really appreciate your thoughts on tempo and phrasing. Thank you very much.

Ya, the idea that one could "learn to play" this piece from a video is pretty silly anyway. I really think of all my videos as just explorations and idea building rather than 'learn guitar online' stuff.

@@Thisisclassicalguitar I gave up playing a year ago after 55 years of mediocre accomplishment. It was part of an identity crisis that, once dealt with, left me with a wonderful sense of emancipation which I carry to this day. It has to be said that I was never a classical guitarist in the true sense but I dabbled. I was obsessed with attempting all styles of guitar some of which gave me acceptance while, with others, I always just enjoyed for their own sake. When I gave up I immediately wrote a book about the whole story. I wish you well in your profession, an obvious gift.

This is so beautifully played. Well done sir! I am a a very good folk and rock guitar player, and I have been playing professionally all my life. But I learned early on that playing Bach on guitar is incredibly challenging.... Now, many years later, I’ve returned to Bach, but I’ve taken up piano I order to do so. Learning a new instrument at my age (56) has been quite an undertaking. But in this video I’m inspired to go back and try some Bach on guitar though I’ll start with something else, something easier, perhaps BWV 999 as suggested here. Thanks for a beautiful performance and an engaging lesson.

thanks for pointing out the opening part of the presto, i just don't realise it when i practice. the low & high voicing parts are easy to recoginize, but the middle part is not. I still try to hear all these parts before I go for speed.

@@Thisisclassicalguitar I would say my level is early advanced. Actually I’ve been playing electric guitar for 25 years and just switched to classical two years ago. Although I appreciate all your lessons I specially enjoy baroque guitar (Bach, Weiss..) as well as Tarrega music and renaissance (guárdame las vacas..). I like your teaching approach, I wouldn’t hesitate to take live lessons with you if I lived in Canada!

I totally get that this one is done with different interpretations. Julian Bream alone did it two different ways 30 or so years apart with the latter being very loose and improvisational. For the purposes of playing it, I prefer the middle ground as you call it.

Hi could you tell me which ornament that is mordent you played in 4th bar lower or upper in th book it is lower
@Thisisclassicalguitar Жыл бұрын
Hi, at the marked ornament in the score I play a trill starting on the upper note: C-B-C-B. A little before that on the 4th beat of the 3rd measure I play a mordent D#-D-D# (or D#-CX-D# for the theory folks).

How would you grade the piece? I'd say I'm an RCM 8 or a low 9, and I know there are quite a few pieces above standard 9 repertoire.
@Thisisclassicalguitar4 жыл бұрын
I would place it at grade 10 as the RCM Toronto does. It's not crazy but it's thick and mature. Really depends on the player and the quality of performance we are looking for. For a refined and motivic performance of the fugue we are talking off the graded scale but to just play it maybe grade 8. So grade 10 makes sense to me...I hate grading anything!
