Reporting back on the NDH30's, these guys are crazy good (being fed by an UAD Apollo). I have bought myself a Topping L30II headphone amp and are waiting for cables so I can run it. But even before that these NDH30's are a good step up from my Sennheiser HD600's. Like you said, it is like listening to the monitors. I have LYD48's and an 18's sub so I have really good monitoring. But I could easily have mixed and in these headphones, they are really good. So thanks for this video so I got around to by these NDH30's. @@MS-vy8ks Hi. Sorry, I did not see this until now. The NDH30's have less top end than the HD600's (that I have at work now), so you can practically sit forever without your ears getting tired. I sold my Sonarworks as I feel it just ruined the sound. Learn the room and the speakers/headphones and you get a better result at the end of the day. I have a Topping A90 headphone amp that go with the NDH30's and the sound is as good as it gets. The HD600's are good, it is not that, but the NDH30's are a little better.

The SRH1840s were a disappointment in terms of build quality, engineering, materials used and distortion in the low frequencies. The Dt1990s combined with aftermarket pads from dekoni (elite velour ones) are much more relaxed in the highs. Audioheaven has some frequency response measurements with these dekoni pads as well.

I think both the 1990 and NDH30 somehow stand above the music (mix), while the Neumann was a bit better (clearer) at showing flaws in a mix. I also prefer the tamed highs of the Neumann (it is in no way dull, just evened out in a way, not as (over)pronounced as the Beyers). RYSY was a good tip by the way, love the song ! I‘m just testing the NDH30 and DT 1990s at home and what really is annoying on the Neumann that the sound changes if you move your headphones a few mm … that’s not cool… and since the Neumann are weaker in the Highs I think I find it better to have a Headphone where I know it has strong highs and keep that in mind working on VoiceOvers etc than hearing less highs, boost more and then freak out at the end on other systems… makes sense ?

How can you resolve the 3rd and 5th harmonics from what is essentially a super position of all frequencies hitting your ear drum. Are you able to do some sort Fourier analysis in you brain ? To be able to detect/resolve a sound that is fundamentally a 3rd/5th harmonic and recognize it as such . I do find that hard to believe. There may be excessive 3rd/5th harmonics, the hard data / graphs indicate as such but you reaction to the headphones looked like you were hearing some an-harmonic sounds or like someone scratching glass! I have the headphones can not resolve in isolation the 3rd/5th harmonics. I have read on other sites, this kind of distortion only reveals itself by a diminishing bass as you get louder. I didn't see you twiddling a volume control.

I didn't want neutral for composing, I have a 2.1 Neumannn system for that. I went with the 1990s and all I did in TotalMixFX was cut 8.5KHz by 10db, Q of 4.0, and a slight dip at 250Hz, and they are a sonic JOY. My mixing time is very low vs composing so I'm fine with that forever EQ on my output and can learn them where they are. SO exciting to listen to. If you need neutral headphones for mixing, don't try to sterilize the 1990s, buy the NDH 30s instead. If you have the money, get Audeze MM-500s and you are done. But for exciting tight bass and a big soundstage, tame the 1990s and you are good to go.

I have DT1990 for 8 months now, and it was precisely that abundance of highs and their crispyness that attracted me to them. And yes, it is true that it can be overwhelming after listening them for more than few hours, so I wear them only when I really need to hear and concentrate on the details. Sanjay C also did a comparison test with them and Neumann's. However, I will still consider getting Neumanns NDH20 or perhaps even a NDH30 model (which are closed-back - and that sometimes can be a benefit, especially when listening in noisy neighbourhoods, sometimes when I wear DT1990 and hearing "outside" noises I feel they are confusing me). Anyway, I did not regret buying DT1990 and I will keep using them. Perhaps Focal Clear Mg Professional headphones might be my next pair, or Audeze, or HEDDphone - I would have to test them first, as they all cost 3x as much (1500 EUR range)

Hi, I got both the closed back and open back Neumann headphones. The closed back works fine but the open back only works in one ear: the left. When I switched the jack to another one it swapped to working in only the right ear. It is not working simultaneously. This was almost a great review, but your reaction to the Shures was bordering on absurd. While the THD measures for this set have been objectively demonstrated, the real world usage isn't nearly as horrible as the metrics might suggest. I've used both the 1990s and 1840s (haven't had a chance to use the NDH30s yet) for mixing and even tracking ITB and truly enjoyed both experiences. Saying the 1840s are no good for mixing is utterly absurd. I have to wonder if forum opinion and graphs are affecting your hearing more than the actual THD.

Would you recommend to use the NDH 30 without a amplifier? At the moment I use DT 990 pro 250 Ohm on a macbook and they have perfect loudness on 50% volume. The NDH 30 have less Ohm, there should be no problem with volume. Would there be a sound quality difference with an amplifier? Great video btw. ;)

Thanks for this review - I’m seriously considering the NDH 30 or HD600 … Subscribed. May I ask how seamlessly the RME remote works with the UFX mk1 … it can’t plug directly into the UFX, can it - it needs to run via your computer? No issues with it, at all? Do you find it very helpful with workflow? Thanks again! Look forward to more videos from you … 😎👍🏼

@@palaHD ...yes my view changed on them, I might edit my remark above. In the end I'm revolving around three headphones, my DT1990 with Dekoni Elite Velour pads (those pads make a useful difference), the Shure 840A with 1540 Alcantara Pads (again those pads make a useful difference), and my MT5. The MT5 are very good in all areas but sound a bit boxy, the Shure 840A highs a bit too hyped and overall slightly confused but otherwise a very good balance and plenty of low end, the DT1990 extremely detailed over all frequencies though again a bit hyped in the highs. The DT1990 are a pro tool and the intricacy of detail is on another level to any headphone I've tried, but they're not the most pleasurable to listen to. The Shure 840 very good and 'fruity' if you can get used to the highs and the slight confusion (not the best transient response), the MT5 as an everyday headphone, very tight sound, clear slightly forward mids and low mids, and nothing annoying - and your brain adapts to the less than open sound. Best of my others, goes to the ATH-A990Z, very good and open sound, very deep low end, clear smooth highs, but not the fastest in transient response, and the weird headband design is annoying, the biggest issue with these is the bass is just too strong for me. The MT8 don't figure for me any more.

@@palaHD Currently I'm using the Shure 840A, liking them, they're not super critical/fast headphones - but that also means they're more listenable. Good bass, openness, freq response flat but far from boring, nothing weird going on. Prefer then with the 1540 Alcantara Pads (which are expensive), they just tame the highs a bit (and are softer on the head!), but the stocks pads have a bit more punch. The Shure 1840 are not good at all in my book, Shure have an issue with distortion (too flexible cones and not powerful enough driver magnets) - which in the 1840 is just not acceptable; in the 840 it's not an issue at all unless you are picky. Shure 840A for listening and 'pleasurable mixing/mastering' or DT1990 for very critical work. MT5 drive easy, and are my rough and ready headphone - I do like their tight response - very defined but overall a bit dark (though due to this you can turn them up !! and really let music hit you - and then the darkness is gone and they give another universe no other headphone can / most headphones are annoying 'turned up') for many the MT5 are a bit too dark though. All I can say... hope it helps.

@@c-samleystudios1573 Hey, forgot to answer, saw the comment previously. Well. First day was really a day of dissapointment. I started looking around the internet and searching whats wrong. They were really to bright and mid focused to my ears. I found an EQ, where people apply some fixes. There are more than just 3-band EQ, but I did it only in 3-band version. +4DB at 150Hz - 0.8Q, -4DB at 3.7k - 2.5Q. Didnt touch any higher freqs, as its completely fine to me after 660s. It fixed at least my will to return it back. I also have Denon 7200, and listened to music only with them first week. But everything whats related to videos, calls, guitar etc I used neumann. What I really liked - is a layered bass, its really great and detailed. The comfort is also better than 660s and with a time got much better. I would say, after 2-3 weeks of usage - I started to use neumann at full time and wanted to sell my Denons aswell. Right now I use only neumann and my speakers. But comparing now to denons.... Some music is better on neumann, some on denon. If its instrumental, like acoustic guiatar or EDM - Neumann If its poor/average quality rock/metal - denon.

With the Shure srh1840, a lot is down to the amount of time you get to burn them in. They only really start to open up after 20 hour an really you need a lot longer than that for them to really sound excellent. I have a pair and I can't really say I get any noticeable harmonic distortion, though I have slightly modified them adding toilet roll to the earcups (others use cotton wool, cigarette tip or rope, all of which slightly adjust the sound.

I own and regularly utilize the 1990 Pro's and the SRH1840 when doing spot checking during mixing and mastering. I find that they are both extremely good headphones. The Shure are the most comfortable headphones of the two. They do not create any wearing fatigue or listening fatigue compared to the 1990's, which have a sizzling high end and are not as comfortable if worn for extended periods of time. I prefer the 1840's overall and make frequent mixing adjustments based on them and the results are very good. I look forward to sampling the Neumann's. I expect them to be better, but I doubt they will be more comfortable than the 1840's. If they are, bonus. My 1840's sound great, as do my 1990's. Perhaps you have a faulty pair, or perhaps you just enjoy bashing Shure 1840's. Either way, not a good look.

Fascinating. I had these too once upon a time but thought mine were defective too with the bass. every sine wave from 60hz-1khz sounded more like a triangle wave lol. but I absolutely loved the midrange and treble (most detailed I've heard). there may have been a few peaks and dips but nothing too out of the ordinary, like I didn't hear that roll-off in the highs he mentioned. so seeing this video and his reaction matching most of what I heard was alarming. but if you really don't hear that distortion, I may try them again in the future. I don't have the dt1990's or ndh30's, but I have the ndh20's. they sound a bit better than the sennheisers overall, yes. so do the srh1840's honestly moreso than the neumanns. and the bass is boosted, but I've adapted and still seem to make good mixing decisions with it like that. the actual frequency response is horrifying. but they mask almost *nothing* in practice. I've never heard headphones with this kind of instrument separation. it's also easier to hear some of the quiet details as a result. mud in the 200-500hz sort of range is identifiable but you can hear a lot more clearly the exact causes and find more relevant fixes that way. so as a tool the neumanns are crazy useful.

I have DT 1990 from like a two years and I am surprised that so many people prize them and use them for purely enjoyment purposes. I think they are very transparent and bring up the transients in your face, even when you EQ out the high frequency peaks you can still hear the transients very clearly. I find these technicalities not very musical for the common audiophile who is not producing music. Definitely very polarizing headphone, you love or hate it.
