Ed...don't ever run that Yamaha again with water hooked to the flush mechanism. That's only to be used for a static flush. Use muffs on the lower intakes when running the engine. Check the Yamaha manual if your skeptical of my advice...great video by the way.
@ianadkins4715 жыл бұрын
Agreed with statement. Flush is only for engine. Your water impeller will be trashed in minutes without water to cool and lubricate.

NP...I'd bring an extra impeller for the trip anyway for that outboard...especially if you don't know when it was last changed. I change mine every few years although Yamaha calls for every year...seems like an overkill business model to do it yearly.

A couple things that have made my life easier: 1) *Nitrile gloves.* I like the 7 mil because they almost never tear but they're thin enough that you don't lose much haptic sensation. 5 mil tears way too often & 9 mil feels like you have something thick on. Buy a box of 50 or 100 and you'll wonder how you ever got along without them. I wear an XL but most women will wear M or L. 2) If you *wrap your oil filters in Saran-Wrap* they won't rust as it seals out the moisture. I learned this from collecting old cars and receiving many NOS (new old stock) filters that had sat on a shelf for years like that.

In trucking we call a 30 micron filter a gravel catcher. We filter fuel down to 3 microns its a lot easier on the injectors. I don’t know if your fuel pump could handle that though.

Some mechanical injection Diesel engines do not do well with 30 micron fuel filters as they increase fuel pressure and can, over time, damage the fuel system (pump, etc. ). If your boat has done fine with 30, I would stick with them, but I would add a bulk filter in line before the 30 micron and have 2 stage filtration. Seaboard marine sells these systems. The bulk filters will clog first with a bad batch of marina fuel. You can add a fuel pressure gauge to help you know how dirty they are. I would also run some standyne in the fuel to help keep injectors clean.
@tryingnottosink91075 жыл бұрын
We were actually thinking of doing that,.We have gauges on the Racors now but a re filter sounds good.

You should have some oil absorbent sheets on your boat. Look for the ones on Amazon or wherever that soak oil only and repel water. You can leave them in your bilge if you have a fuel leak they are also great to put down under your filters if you have any spillage while transferring oil the way you are. Good luck
@tryingnottosink91075 жыл бұрын
We buy rolls of them! We should have put one down first. I did not expect it to be that messy.
@lesb34815 жыл бұрын
My personal preference is to use the 10 or 20 micron Racor filters, just because they should catch more contamination. Over time, it seemed I had more injector issues while running the 30's. Not completely sure if the filter contributed to this, but it was enough circumstantial evidence for me. Also, if you don't polish your tanks regularly or haven't had them cleaned out semi-recently, you should probably carry at least a dozen or more spare filters. Years ago, we were ferrying an older boat with sludgy tanks, which worked fine, until they got jostled around in several days of rough seas. Some of the sludge became suspended and we found ourselves changing filters constantly for awhile. Since you'll be crossing the Gulf Stream at least twice, this could be a concern, because it gets rough out there regularly. I was also wondering what sort of oil change pump you have on your boat? On mine, I can pump the old oil out of the engines, then stick the hose into the new bucket of oil, reverse the pump and fill the engines up without having to pour it in from the top. My pump will also transfer about 9-10 quarts per minute. It's a Reverso model #3010 and has three ports, so it will also do my generator. You would probably need a single port (such as a Reverso #OP-7) for each engine, since yours are essentially located in different engine rooms. I also recently installed a two port model on my transmissions, so I can also now easily change the oil in them too. Have fun on your trip and I look forward to more videos!
@tryingnottosink91075 жыл бұрын
I blew out the Impeller on the transfer pump just before doing the oil change. I meant to order one and forgot. I decided to do it manually, and will not make that mistake again. We were thinking of having the tanks cleaned when we get to Ft Lauderdale. We have dual Racors, so we can switch over quickly if there is a problem but better safe than sorry.
@lesb34815 жыл бұрын
Yes, getting your tanks cleaned out is a very good investment. If, you have clean fuel, it eliminates many of the reliability problems with diesels. It's not a huge deal, provided you already have clean out ports installed in your tanks. If not, they can can be retrofitted, but it's a pain and a bit expensive. I also installed a fuel polishing system in my engine room and it's truly been one of the best purchases I've ever made.
@billwilletts5 жыл бұрын
I have the same engines in my Hatteras and I run 30 micron. Recommended by Detroit. Also doesnt your oil change pump do bidirectional? I Reverse flow and let the pump feed it back in.

I'd guess the round/flat antenna you had right in front of you when you were talking about not knowing what they were might be an omni directional HD TV over the air antenna. I like the paint the chain thing ... we do that too. Every ten feet on 120 feet of chain. Red (R), then White (W), then Blue (B), then begin doubling up R/R, R/W, R/B, W/R, W/W, W/B, B/R, B/W, B/B. Single critique ... yarn (while you'll have to replace it more often) is much more environmentally friendly than plastic tie wraps as a backup to the paint.

So happy that you two are back after the tax season. I look forward to your trip, and you said you were working on your production value this year. I urge you to consider either dumping the intro music completely or cutting it way down. In this video it was 1:27 into the video before you said a word..way too long. I would urge you to start with about 5 seconds of a "tease" in which you said something like .."in this episode we do this..." then hit the intro music for about 10 seconds or less, and then get right to it. I know you worked hard on your intro montage and music, but it kills your views. These days most people do not the attention span to wait for 15 seconds for anything..let alone 1:27. Watch how Delos does it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYjddWermZZlhK8 Watch how Sailing with the Wynns does it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXSvlHSCmZijrcU Your viewers want you..they probably fast forward throught the intro music montage, at least you hope you do because it means they are sticking around.
