Hi Moose Scrapper. I was wondering about putting the fire brick in while the rigidizer is still wet. Cheers for answering that
@mridaho78713 жыл бұрын
There are two reasons to put the brick in while the rigidizer is wet. It prevents you from cracking the rigidizer while putting the brick I n after the rigidizer is dry. It helps stick the brick to the bottom so it doesn’t come out when you’re pulling the crucible out.

You're only supposed to let it dry for 24 hours and then fire it up in several stages to drive out the rest of the moisture and cure it. It's like clay in that it needs to be fired to reach its proper strength. It'll work if you don't cure it but you'll have to fix it sooner.

I am where you were at 2 weeks go. Like a moron, I accidentally closed the lid but I caught it before it got screwed up. Thank God!

Just received a 10 Kg crucible for my new Devilforge, but like you, I have a problem - The crucible only just fits into the space. There's barely 1/4 inch of space around it. I applied the rigidiser as advised, but it looks like my liner is too thick. There's no room for get lifting tongs down the sides of the crucible ! - Looks like I'm going to have to remove the rigidiser, which incidentally, has remained quite flexible and it's now several weeks since applying it. Has anyone else had this problem ? - Should I have pressed the ceramic wool harder against the sides of the forge before rigidising ? The crucible is 175mm in diameter at the top. According to Devilforge's specs, the inner diameter of the forge should be 200mm, but it's actually around 185mm.

I always wonder about furnaces. I don't do the volume you do but would be cool to have
@moosescrapper59285 жыл бұрын
I really do not do much for volume these days, honestly. I am just very selective on what i scrap now. It either needs to be something new or interesting or something I know has a lot of value or specific metals I am looking for. But you are right, a furnace is an investment, unless you make your own. The King of Random has several tutorials on it.

Nice furnace. I have the refractory one, it's a beast. It will bearly hold a 10kg crucible, but a #6 8kg works perfectly. Also, the smaller 4kg kaowool version, great little furnace, really good on propane usage, the big 10kg one will suck down a 20lb cylinder in no time.

Got my Devils Forge furnace today . Had no idea what is Refractory coating Rigidizer is for. bigstackD directed me here.

I didn't get a brush or a firebrick for the bottom of my forge, I only got the 4kg one though, not doing big pours as of yet, 4 kilos of anything molten is plenty enough for me. Hope to see if fired up!

Was that 1 part powder to .7 water or 1 part powder to 2.7 water?

can I buy the rigidizer on amazon? what type is it?
@LordPadriac4 жыл бұрын
It's just refractory cement. You can find it all over the place on Amazon. There is a range of cements though so you want to make sure that you buy a refractory cement rated for the heat your forge is rated for or better. Also check out for local masonry supply places first. The shit is heavy and no one offers free shipping on it so that will ding you quite a bit. My local place carries the HeatStop brand which is excellent. They use it for outdoor fireplaces and fire bowls. You'll probably be stuck buying either a 25lb or 50lb bag of it whether your buy it online or locally so make sure you have an airtight container for the excess. You'll need to repair the surfacing job from time to time.

Ok, so your saying .7 to 1 but then your saying a weight to a volume, is that a mix up? I have never heard of a ratio that compares a weight measurement to a volume measurement

How about some american standard weights not everyone uses metric system
@mawalst14 жыл бұрын
1 Kilogram is 2.2 lbs. The 10 kilo forge should be able to handle 22lbs. Crucibles, just be sure to check your dimensions
