Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

4 жыл бұрын

Our Indian Ocean departure is approaching fast, lets get Nandji ready for the task! www.sailingnandji.com/
This video was filmed early Febuary before the global pandemic really took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves.
In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we arrive back to Chalong bay on the south coast of Thailand to comlpete some more boat jobs to prepare our yacht to cross oceans. We only recently left the boat yard in Krabi and after a great down wind sail, we are back to Phuket where we can readily find everything we need to finish off the niggling jobs at anchor. Our departure date is approaching fast and we need to stock up on engine spares ready for the year of sailing that lied ahead. We cruise around Phuket on the scooter collecting the necessary items and complete some of those jobs off the list like painting the bilge in the V-berth, installing harness points and up grading the running rigging on the mainsail.
With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!!
We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

Good to see you frothers are working your butts off to get Nandji ready for the big crossing. Work, work, work. Everybody who thinks people who sail around the world are just hanging about having a good time should become Nandji subscribers. You would set them straight in a heartbeat. Hope the pandemic doesn't screw things up for you. It's making things difficult for sailors in the Caribbean right now.

You should re do the pad eyes using through bolts and nuts with a backing plate. As you have it, one heavy tug with your weight and its out. With a backing plate that covers a larger surface than the eye pads, you have a chance of it holding and you staying in the boat.

Hi guys love your effort you do great, your safety line attachments should have bolts not screws, as if you go over the side (heaven forbid you dont) those screws will just pull out with the force of being pulled through the water, remember it does not happen on a day of only 5 knots of wind. Please change to bolts with good sized washers on the inside the forces are huge try holding a oar over the side when doing 5 knots . Just thinking of your safety. Keep this great channel going
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 4 жыл бұрын
The anchor points are positioned so that you will not reach the side and end up in the water. That is the idea. If you rip those screws out you are doing pretty good I reckon. Thanks legend.

Remember, force equals mass TIMES velocity. And there appears to be impressive mass in the upper body assets of your awesome crew. Please, for your viewers' sake, thru bolt the tether attachment padeyes with backing blocks. The load on them from one, or maybe more, crew being hurled by a wave to the low side is more than the short screw fastening can reliably handle, especially under tensile load. Also, suggest you check the Harken catalog for how to best reeve your mainsheet so that line twist does not create more friction than you saved with the new ball bearing blocks. Hope you, and the rest of us, are out of lockdown and back to sailing soon!

Hey Yosh and Bon, and Marley man, I'm presuming this was filmed before the most unfortunate grounding?? Boat is looking sweet, gotta love the asymmetric, unicorn fart, brilliant. We are in full lockdown here in SA, most unfortunate as my broker mate in Portland Oregon has a Bob Perry design Hans Christian 34' lined up for me to get surveyed, and there's also a custom built steel hull 38' CC cutter in Mexico that I'm interested in. I'm devos but still hanging in here, I haven't set foot on a yacht in 6 weeks after doing my skippers courses in Cape Town in early March. Fun week of sailing in up to 48 knots true around Cape Town, beating into upper 40's close hauled, 3rd reef and a postage stamp of heady, yeeeew, God Bless and stay safe, I'll keep in touch via email. Fair winds and safe sailing. Here's a thought or two for the future for heavy weather sailing, get a Cunningham fitted to your main (if there isn't one already) this is a great addition for main trim and will allow you to reef later with better boat speed and less heeling, the boat won't get overpowered and want to round up so much when beating. The other thing that I've seen on a few blue water boats is a second track on the mast just next to the main track (just a bit longer than the luff length of a storm tri-sail, obviously you can use the main halyard, for a bagged loose footed storm tri-sail at mast foot, this means that you can drop the 3rd reefed main and switch to the storm tri-sail if required, you just need an outhaul line with a block and cam cleats for the storm sail. The Hans Christian I'm looking at has this setup and short of a fourth reef the best option. PS get your ship's compass/es deviation calibrated before leaving, this should be done annually, they might be as much as 15° off magnetic North, well worth it for long ocean passages. God bless you and keep you safe

Seriously though guys, your strong points need to be within reach of the companionway steps, so that you can clip on BEFORE you cross the threshold into the cockpit!

Aaaargh! What about the backing plate??? Gotta spread that load mate! If you come up hard on the end of your tether (i.e. Lifeline), you’re liable to rip the strong point out of the fibreglass and probably take a fair chunk of the boat with you.... (Shock load of 60-80kgs of human x inertia of a pitching or rolling boat = one less strong point attached to the boat and possibly one man/woman overboard.....) :-(

You can not jump over board attached to the anchor points, that's the point. But yes, general consensus is to backing plate and through bolt. Have plenty of time on our hands now so found another job!
