Nice first assessment. The dog is far too young to really know what the dog's capable of, so I hope you take a slow approach and have reasonable expectations. A 1 year old presa is often still a baby compared to a herder.

Was watching the Live tracking video yesterday and something went screwy with at 9+ minutes. Not sure what was going on but hope you’ll be able to fix it, in Part 2. I see Lexi is gone … he is ‘sold’ … yes? There was no confirmation as you’ve done for other dogs … that’s why I was asking. I hope Kevin is doing better and putting more weight on. I assume he still hasn’t finished growing and will keep doing so until around 18 months, or more?

watching this reminded me to give my dog some affection and play today 🥰 i love it when dog-training comes up on my feed. it reminds me of just how motivated my dog is to obey when I see y'alls working with you. I rly take my dog for granted at this point 🙁 After the initial training where I had to get rid of her dog-aggression with the e-collar was successful 5 years ago, she's been one of the most impressivem well-behaved dogs a lot of people I know has ever met! i take little credit for it, since I learned all my techniques from youtube! but i will say im pretty good about discipline and applying what im told to 😃 I owe my dog her world 🌈

Shield K9 Dog Training, Awesome puppy! Thank you very much for uploading this video! I have two questions though. I have no experience with this breed, but, online, people say that these dogs are natural protectors and would attack if provoked. Does the avoidance of this puppy mean that he is not very brave or is he so confident that he does not see your actions as a real threat (and, therefore, is confused and annoyed)? If the latter is true and he would attack and protect if he thought that there was a real danger, is it not better, for 99 percent of people, to leave him as he is (with regular obedience training and socialization, of course); rather than training him to be a protection dog? Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

This was incredibly interesting, Haz. I would really enjoy seeing more videos like this, where you're talking about everything that youre doing and why as you go through it with the dog and handler. One question, though, since the dog was so handler sensitive, wouldn't it have helped the dog open up more if the handler encouraged him to do so a little? Like when he started to show a little interest in the toy, why wouldn't you want the handler to say something like "get it" just to let the dog know that going after the toy is ok? Just curious. I wanna understand as much as I can. Thanks for all you do! Your book has been so helpful for me.
@thecawckiestking
@thecawckiestking Жыл бұрын
I'm not Haz but I'm assuming that its because you can't get an assessment of the dog's "baseline" when its following a trained command, and a trained response can fool someone into thinking that there is something there that isn't. Its very important to distinguish between natural behavior and trained response in doing an assessment. It also helps to assess what a dog has been trained in before and how good that training is, that the dog will stick to it even without owner input, which is also a good indicator of how well bite training and more importantly bite inhibition / impulse control will hold up and how much of a liability the dog will be to bite when its not supposed to. I have very little doubts that this dog will do well on the impulse control side of bite work. Its a good 50/50 though whether or not the dog will have the proper commitment and power needed to be more than maybe just a deterrent dog. We won't know which way it'll swing until Haz puts it through its paces in actual training.

Yall remember that video a couple of years ago where there’s a mom in the background telling someone that her son is going to go pro? And then the boys misses a football and gets hit in the face?? 😂😂 ok this dog is that boy. Avoidance like crazy and you can see towards the end before the final bark how he’s really trying to squeeze his rear in between the wall and the handler? Any dog who is even going to be considered for protection, at a minimum should stand his ground next to the handler. At the very very very least!

My Presa has a INSANE amount of prey drive. Also very stable, his drive is like a switch. He can read danger VERY well, he knows if you are a threat. I made sure to get him a bunch of contact with kids so he wouldn't be overly obsessed with them all the time. Before his kid training he would get far too excited to let him off the leash. My Presa is so strong he would be hurting ME just trying to stop him from taking care of what he perceives a threat. Short leash is manageable but if he has slack he has control. He would be on his hind legs testing the strength of me and the leash. No defense training required at all, in fact i try to get him to be LESS scary lol, My boy Tank Scares people just by smiling at them. His happy bark is also scary, I found its not the bark with my Presa you have to worry about. Its the Growl, If my boy is growling at you i am usually taking action to make sure i have control of him because he has perceived you as a threat. I also have a Great Dane, they both have INTENSE prey drive. Its slightly worse in the Great Dane, i can't walk them at the same time if i care about my back at all.

I don't want to be critical of the Presa Canario, like most Mastiff breeds, it is not a dog suitable as a Personal Protection Dog which is something that requires a very different skill set than a guard dog which protects a premise. As a guard dog protecting a premise, your Mastiff breeds ( Presa, Cane Corso, etc ) are fine.They are great in this role because they are very territorial and protect what they perceive as theirs, sometimes too much so. Some owners say that having guests come to the house can be problematic. A personal protection dog for a civilian needs to be a dog that can anywhere the handler goes, is well behaved in public, big enough to do the job and small enough to go anywhere. It must also do what it is told immediately and equally important STOP immediately when told. Despite the fascination with large breeds ( and I myself have been guilty of this ) at the end of the day the top two breeds that check off all the boxes in Personal Protection are the German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois. They enough size speed and agility and more importantly, the most highly developed Nervous system of all suitable breeds. Meaning, they can endure more stress making much more difficult to intimidate them and make them shut down. I shopped around for quite sometime before I found the right company from which to acquire a personal protection dog. Canine Protection International was the best. All I learned about personal protection, suitable breeds and why I learned from him. I'm glad I got my dog when I did, because not long after, John the owner decided to sell the protection end of the business after 35 years and take life easy. They is get working line GSD's and BM's from European Blood lines and in the case of BM's stay away from dogs from the Netherlands. They are too high drive for civilian applications with no off switch. They are suitable for military applications only.

That is a nice looking Presa. Curious which breeder? I am willing to bet this owner put alot of obedience on the dog, socialized it, etc. The OB on the dog probably is keeping him from straying from the owner. But obviously he is also unsure of himself, first instinct is to get away from the threat instead of go towards it. Curious to see what kind of dog he really is. Are his genetics being suppressed by extreme OB or are his genetics on full display here? Most large breed dog owners will say their dog (presa, doby, rottie, GSD, etc.) will protect them naturally....this is a prime example of how false that statement is. Would love to see more presa on your channel. I'm a GSD owner, but always love to see presa.

Same...from what I recall, Haz once basically said (and I'm paraphrasing here), put a mastiff in a compound and let their reactivity do its thing. Probably wouldn't hurt to do an assessment. Giant Schnauzers are in fact used in bite work (protection, police dogs, military, etc), but like all dogs, it really depends on the breeding and nature of the dog. Like all dogs, there's a big difference between a show line vs a working line, for instance.

Lets not try to be overly understanding of apparent lack of drive in this dog. This dog is not concerned about the handler or trying to protect the handler. This dog lack prey drive and defensive drive. Great looking dog, but lacks working quality as protection dog or even as a guard dog. I had a Dutch shepherd, at 3 months, she was completely focused, ton of prey drive and wanted to bite the sleeve hard, and very protective of its owner. This dog is all looks. Perfect dog as family pet. But would not rely on this dog for serious protection work in future. This dog has less necessary drive to be a protection/guard dog than the half of golden retrievers exiting these days.

You even hear the trainer say" don't say nothing"! Dog and owner should work as a team. As long as the dog kept or didn't want trainer near owner and it , the dog reacted correctly. If the dog was tested correctly and with pain the dog would of acted differently
