To give more context -- even though Zelensky's popularity during his term declined, even before the war polls showed he would win over any known competitor in a potential election. So, he was headed for a second term. Ukrainians are very critical of any leadership, and by their standards, Zelensky was "OK". That actually meets the bar given the corrupt establishment he'd be competing against. Also, factor in the COVID pandemic, the crusade which the oligarchs waged back against his government, and Putin's unwillingness to make peace in Donbas. People got bitter over the situation since they expected more from Zelensky's presidency. It's an achievement he was still headed for a second term despite all these obstacles and his own inexperience. I was watching his presidency closely, and he didn't at all become a "different man" during wartime. But he sure got much more room to prove his worthiness in this new context.

I've been watching "Servant of the People" as well and I think his issues in peacetime as president is the real-life version of what his character faced in that show too, and maybe even worse: bureucratic red tapes, corruption, struggle of power against the oligarchs, etc etc. His initial idealism for change was probably eroded over time due to facing them as someone inexperienced in politics. It's very human. War, however, just cut through all those bureucratic and political mess, and becomes a struggle for survival, and Zelenskyy's idealism and initial hope clearly shines here. Very interesting and balanced view. As a Romanian, the culture(especially surrounding politics and the state apparatus in general) is very similar and a result of largely the same factors(decades of communism, history, the area, etc) so this to me makes perfect sense. In the end, Zelenskyy is a person too, he's not perfect, he's also the product of his time and environment and vulnerable to falling into the traps of East European politics. Corruption in Ukraine and in this entire region is at a scale people in the West can't really imagine, it's everywhere, at every level and takes on so many forms, it's very hard to counter because every corner of the state apparatus is eaten up by it, by the nepotism, the ineptitude, it's a culture in itself and one man, even with good intentions, always risks being dragged into it. I've personally always thought Zelenskyy has a good foundation, a good heart, overall good intentions but was getting a bit lost and influenced by the world he entered as a President. This role now suits him, this isn't about internal day to day politics but about a very human situation where he has to be a leader in a different way, a way that takes him back to his roots, his human qualities and abilities. Hopefully Ukraine can hold on for long enough to not have to compromise too much, certainly not to the demands Putin has now, and he can remain in charge and stay grounded this time ,not let it go to his head and not fall back into those bad influences because I believe he has shown he can in fact be a good, inspiring leader who cares about his nation and is able to make himself respected and listened to even outside the country, the qualities are all there.

Like many reformist leaders have experienced when taking over a country Zelenskyy has found that there are entrenched institutions that are not easily disrupted which is probably one main reason why he was struggling with his presidency. It's the same type of opposition and entrenchment that Obama experienced in the US when he tried to adopt hope and change in the US.
@ingsve2 жыл бұрын
@@HMouse123 Well, they are experiencing the same type of entrenchment but haven't really had the power to actually attempt to do anything to affect change. In common for all of them though is that one man isn't enough to affect change. You need a critical mass of your peers to buy into the vision in order to have any chance of disrupting a status quo. That's perhaps why people expectation are often overly inflated when they elect someone like Zelenskyy because they want his vision but electing him is not all that is needed for it to happen. More people in power need to also share the same vision rather than opposing it. At some point both Obama and Zelenskyy found themselves having to play more within the existing rules rather than trying to reinvent the playbook.

@AlxzAlec2 жыл бұрын
You’re the joke. If you saw evidence, you’d see how Ukraine is shelling people in Eastern Ukraine, Russia is aiding the people in their occupied areas, evidence of aftereffects of drugs on Zelenskyy and false claims that Ukrainian soldiers don’t surrender and that they take no casualties. Have you heard of Kherson, the city in Ukraine? They said that their arguculture was destroyed and they weren’t allowed to speak their mothertongue Russian because the Kiev Regime banned it and didn’t value the region at all, they basically treated them like trash for speaking Russian. They have a vote to join the Russian Federation. Ukraine is the bad guy, and you need to wake up instead of hating on people that have a brain and calling them all Russians.

On the first sight it may appear as a nuanced explanation but in fact doesn’t give nearly enough context to most claims. It also says literally nothing about Zelenskiy’s economic and social policies, which are the most interesting and important part of his presidency. You say falling popularity? Would be nice to mention that Zelenskiy had by far the highest support than any other president in Ukraine at this point of presidency. And this is despite the fact that ALL tv channels in Ukraine are controlled by hostile to him oligarchs. You say he was becoming a strong man and repressing opposition? Maybe you should mention that it was a part of his electoral campaign to make former government officials accountable for their corruption crimes. And that people elected him to do that. Or are you talking about increasing taxes for large business (oligarchs) and redistributing the money to nearly double the salaries of doctors in Ukraine and invest massively in infrastructure (oh no, this horrible populistic move can only be made by an irresponsible strongman in the developed west). It’s not the first time I see on Vox such a superficial analysis of events in other countries. Please be careful with that.

The late Comrade Hugo Chavez also had his own show called Aló Presidente which lasted from 1999 to 2012. He spent an average of 40 hours a week promoting his policies on the show. It started as a call-in show where Venezuelans could call and express their grievances to him. One of the most infamous episodes was when he ordered battalions to Colombia which led to the Andean diplomatic crisis. This show was a HUGE tool in influencing the population with his Chavismo ideals, and it was very popular for those who felt they finally had a direct contact with a presidency after years of being ignored by the previous presidencies.

Guys like Zelenskyy understand politics, and the motivations which drive it all, far better than others, I believe, simply because he's also been a performer. Similar to how Ronald Reagan was an actor who understood his fellow politicians very well indeed. He's an endless inspiration, and very real to his CORE. And many of his recently statements on camera have been very similar to those of Winston Churchill during world war 2.
@vikkipink12882 жыл бұрын
He reminds me a lot of Winston Churchhill. Not popular during times of peace but incredible during a crisis. Even the staying in the country and demonstrating he wasn’t afraid was important to him too. Not to mention they both give incredibly moving speeches. I hope everyone there is safe and that peace will come soon 💜

It seems to me like he was a man with good intentions, but who in peacetime was in over his head in the politcal game, a president that didn't know what promises he could make and that floated between issues without being fully able to address them. However, as a wartime president his ability to inspire, and his ability to lead when there is one overwhelming issue to focus on is astonishing. Wartime leaders and peacetime leaders are rarely the same person, I'm just glad Ukraine seems to have stumbled on the wartime leader it needs.

Thank you for the recap. I'd like to believe that the Volodymyr Zelensky we see today is the real one. Like in his show, it can be difficult for one good person to change an almost entirely corrupt institution. For better or worse, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has separated the wheat from the chaff in the country's leadership, and now we get to see the best that Ukraine has to offer.

Zekenskyy's story heavily reminds me of the show "Designated Survivor", where the main character is merely minister of housing development, but is suddenly thrust into the role of US president. Like Zelenskyy, he doesn't have a traditional political background but his suddenly ascent into presidency cheated the two-party duopoly, thus being an independent. And like Zelenskyy, many expected him to be naïve and not last past the first term, yet he proved otherwise. So if Zelenskyy can do it, perhaps Kiefer Sutherland could try running for US president?
