For incremental approach during Mixing, I believe the 'Mixer Snapshots' is one of the greatest things, Studio One has to offer. Also, Studio One's silent autosave is really a life saver. It has saved a lot of people (including myself) from huge issues.

Thank you, Gregor! This is brilliant! I often have situations just like you describe, where I want to try some significant experiment in the song, so first I want to save another version so I can always go back. I've always just used the "save as" feature in order to create other versions. And then I would create a separate note file in order to write down notes about each version. Now I can do it much quicker and easier without having to add an extra file for notes! I think the tips in this video can also be useful for learning the best way to back up songs to other drives, which I like to do periodically while I work. I always like to save the song to the cloud, to another hard drive on my system and to a removable drive just in case! I used to go out of Studio One and copy and paste all the files, but now I can do it much quicker and easier!

I really like the idea of song versions. However, let's say I forked my project along the way into two versions A and B. A is where I started, I created B and kept working there. Added some FX, a couple instruments, maybe messed with the arrangement. Then I decide I liked A better, but I want to take a few FX-Chains and Instruments from my current version B with me to version A. How would I go about this? If I have multiple song files, at least I'll be able to "Import Session Data" and "Append Tracks", right?

If you are working on a version that you intend to save under a new name (like your half tempo example) but want to retain your original what happens in the autosave time period because now you should have Auto saved something that is incremental to the version that you want to save, meaning it has changes in it for your new version that you don't want in your old version.

One thing that is important and has been overlooked is what happens to your files if your computer crashes or your files become lost - The easy way around this conundrum is to save files to new folder on the desktop and right click on saved file and save to compressed folder.. Once done save compressed folder to an external drive.. The whole file will be saved forever ... From external drive folder you can open file and send to Studio One.. Footnote: I found out the hard way how to save song files after losing tons of work.. Hope this helps and happy song creation

Ok, big question.... If I'd edit a song, let's say I'm happy with a certain version and then I'd like a 2nd version which is shorter, and has some other edits and changes. Before I make this 2nd version, do I have to turn off autosave? Because otherwise it would corrupt my initial version, right? And then after making that 2nd version I "save to new version" and then I have the initial one intact and this 2nd one. Right?

One thing I've not figured out is how to open a new song in the same folder. Use case: a sound design sessions for the current song you're working on, or AB/B ing different mixed down versions. What I do now is copy a song file that already exists in the current folder and delete everything from it. But this feels incredibly inefficient.

Saludos.

Look up how to make a beat map in studio one if the tracks tempo isn't consistent and go into the metronome settings and render the metronome as an independent track. Doing this means you can have queues counted in for you. Once you've recorded your drum tracks you can mute the metronome. This video doesn't really apply to unless your mixing your drums in another session which I wouldn't personally do cause you'll have around 8 drum tracks depending on your setup. I hope that helps :)

Ok using Alternative versions, you are making your changes BEFORE you save as alternative version. Should you have autosave turned off when doing this? It seems that if you make your changes before you save the alternative version, autosave will save the alt version and the original will be gone forever!

Saved it as my preset aswell, Explode them to pitches for arrangement purpose, but did not bounce them to audio files incase i want to come back to song later on and maybe replace sample or any sont of change ( multiple midi files by explode to pitches but still one instance of impactXT in arrangement window) When i save the song it asks for ( want to save external files to song - i press YES ) And now if i move/sort/change/update my library in computer and then open my saved song and open impactXT it says SAMPLE MISSING and ask for locate the file or delete. Now thats a pain because in thousands of samples its impossible to find thE same sample just because library has been modified. Just because of missing samples it won’t play the missing sample in impact. Hopefully you understand the situation Now my question is -- Is there a way that if we can save custom sample pack that we have made out of our own library in that song so doesn’t matter if samples are sitting in the back end or not they should be in song or project all the time... Gregor -- This approach is backwards! If I save as New Version -- I would expect to now be working on that NEW VERSION, while my prior progress was saved as is. Why would Presonus do it the opposite way, and assume that we want to continue working on the prior version? And then if we want to work on the "New Version", we have to close out and reopen what we just said we wanted as a New Version? This has really messed me up, with assumptions of how this should work. I just don't understand why Presonus chose this seemingly backwards approach to an otherwise cool feature.

My thoughts exactly. Moreover: In this example you need to never save before to keep the former original version - what about if in the middle the autosave was triggered? (or the auto almost reflex of hitting ctrl + s). So, if I understand correctly, if I want to safely start a new version I need to: 1. Open my original song that I don't want modified 2. Without modifying anything, save a new version with whatever description/name will the version be 3. Immediately "restore" the new version I just created, to start working in the new version. As an alternative (doing "the same" but thinking about it differently): 1. Open my original song I don't want modified 2. Save new version as "ORIGINAL" 3. Continue working in my current, now new, version. But this wouldn't have a name associated with it until I save it as a new version What an entangled line of thought (I say this loving studio one workflows, but this one is messed up :D)

Hey, if you have 4 or more songs - recorded in the same session, how would you split up and save each song to its own? is it possible? in a smart way. :) Love your videos - spare me a lot of time

Maybe try using the Arranger track? Make an Arranger section for each song. Then you can easily delete sections ("delete range") and move them (drag the section in the Arranger track) and save each section/song as its own song project.

Hi Steen, thanks very much for your kind words! I'd recommend to look into Scratch Pads for this. I'm featuring Scratch Pads in my video here (although in a slightly different way, but it could be used for your purposes also): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHzOloWjh92soK8 ...hope this helps! -GBY

One will never have a single problem knowing what is the latest song version if they use some logical means of altering the "save as" song name. Such as using a suffix of _1s.song, _1b.song, _2g.song, etc. Just know as Gregor points out here that .song files do not contain all of the components in the song. So you'll want to know how Studio One builds song folders within each song, and how to utilize them.
What do these Event icons mean?! #StudioOnewithGregor
