I didn’t even know what ranunculuses were until I started working in the floral dept at my job. I’ve always loved growing food for myself and other but never been a person to want to grow flowers - although I have always appreciated them. Working in floral has changed my perspective of flowers in art! It’s such a fun, calming hobby to work with flowers (and plants) but is also a very focused and intentional art. Thanks for showing and explaining the starting of their growth! Also very cool to hear how you plan to use them once they are harvested (:

I have 3 trays started in enclosed porch. Kitty water doesn't freeze..stays pretty cool. Some have sprouted ...have some mold on a tray? That didn't happen last yr. but I think it was warmer/later when I stared them. I have to put them out in the field. I am also trying to get something to market in June. I think your hoophouse will be your golden ticket! It's the temps. that get us!!

Wow you are growing so many this year. Serena and Ian( from You can't eat the grass) grow beautiful ranunculus in their hoophouse with shade cloth.

This season I'm doing better at ranunculus also. Last season I went right to grow lights and it didn't work as well. I gave it the two weeks of dark and cold and I got quite a bit of roots before growth. Hopefully that makes all the difference. Thanks for the fun videos.

Try putting ranunculus on the north side of the house/structure. It worked well for me.

Thank you Christina, good luck! I’m trying Ranuculus again this year. I put mine in the bath tub. Just one small tray. We have a very old fashioned bath tub and it is cold I’m mean cold ! Not a good place to start them, they sat there and did nothing and I thought oh no here we go again. I did end up moving them and about 3/4 of them started sprouting yay! I plan on potting them up soon and I’m also hoping to get them to bloom this year, if not I’m definitely giving up. So fingers crossed for both of us🤞🏻🤞🏻💨❄️💚🙃

Anemones are always much harder than ranunculus, even after soaking. They are also much more prone to molding/rotting in the soil. Try not to keep them as wet and you should do fine. I sprouted 1000 ranunculus and 300 anemones this year and my did much better after I warmed them up a bit. I kept them cool and dark for 10 days with no sprouting at all. I moved them into my kitchen and they got diffused light and 68° and sprouted like crazy. Good luck Christina! Your hoop house is calling for some beautiful flowers!!

Thanks!! Should be a fun season for both of us! Also agree about some light. I have never covered my ranunculus and they sprout just fine

Last year was my first time and I didnt get blooms until end of june right when the heat kicked in. This year, i started them earlier, and plan to get them outside when it is much colder. I didnt realize how cold tolerant they are. 1 flat already sprouted and under lights today (on my washing machine in the basement). The other flat planted a week ago is still on my basement stairs covered with a 10 ×20 tray to keep it dark. I see a few roots, but no shoots yet.

Great content as usual..thank you for the great info. One question I have is I hear that mice like to eat rannunculus corms. Does anyone know if this is true? It's not that my house is infested..lol..but they come into my basement in winter as we haul firewood in. Does it hurt to cover them with a board until they start to sprout? Thanks so much.
@SunshineFlora
@SunshineFlora Жыл бұрын
I haven’t had that happen but it never hurts to set traps. Mice will probably eat anything!

Good luck with your anemones and ranuculus. I have never grown any before. I'm just a home gardener. Could I start them in the house and then transfer to containers on my deck later. Bonny zone 5b

Thanks for another great video! wondering if it would work to put them out in your greenhouse once they have sprouted? Or would the temps in the greenhouse not be conducive for them...? The snowstorm you mentioned has started here - we are in the bullseye of it here in Minnesota - when it is done we should have another 20-24" in snow! Yikes!

oh my! Stay home thru that one! My greenhouse is great in mild weather, but doesn't hold temperature in the winter when it's this cold!

Aren't you supposed to cover the flats. I heard they like dark to sprout. Mine are on my basement stairs, covered with a 10 x20 tray.

@marty stevens it helps keep the water oxygenated supposedly, & will help decrease chance of rotting, but I haven't done it for the past 2 years & none have rotted except the cheap Aviv ranuncs I bought from Lowe's!

They are buried in soil so there is no light on them even if they are under grow lights. I kept mine under grow lights so that when they sprouted they immediately got light as I didn't check on them every day. I believe the majority of mine sprouted on day nine with a seed room temp. of 19 or 20deg celsius.

Why don’t you just keep the dried flowers in the stand until you have fresh flowers again. Just put the sign out when you want. It’s not costing you anything but your time to put the sign out and bring it in. It won’t hurt to try. Good luck! I hope you sell lots more.
