Under the sun of Dorne, wealth is measured in water as much as in gold. So I always thought Drinkwater makes perfect sense as a Dornish surname. It would be stupid af in the Riverlands, that's for sure.

Thoroughly enjoy all your videos, particularly how you piece together the seemingly disparate supporting evidence throughout the source material. But if I had to push back on one conclusion you've made it is that GRRM is essentially a hippie at heart and that the "point" of the whole series is that War is futile and itself is the great evil. I’ve seen interviews where GRRM discusses his conscientious objector status in Vietnam, and he mentions, that if he had been drafted during WWII he would have fought, because that was a war worth fighting. If there exists a Hippie Scale with a 10 being your quintessential tie-dyed flower child, and a 1 being Curtis LeMay, I’d say GRRM is about a 6 (maybe 6.5). He certainly leans towards the Love&Peace side, but when I read GRRM there is nothing written in black and white. He loves the gray areas where opposing views on any subject can make very valid points; and this never leads to a clean, concise conclusion to be made. This is the #1 reason I love his stories, it is a much more compelling reflection of the real world. Without a doubt a major theme in his works is the human cost that comes from war. But if GRRM believes that WWII was a war worth fighting, is there any corollary in the World of Ice and Fire? If Dragons represent nuclear weapons, is there any reason that justifies using Nuclear weapons? Let’s say there exists a worldwide slave trade… would it be worth using nuclear weapons to end a worldwide slave trade? Maybe so. This seems to be much more in line with the moral dilemmas the show up throughout his stories.

congratulations on the Esquire article. It's wonderful to see you as a part of the ASOIAF Game of Thrones community, being written about in Esquire. The mainstream media is taking more of an interest in GRRM's ASOIAF, which is wonderful. Only good can come from that!. This period of time we are so lucky to have; to be able to listen to George speak, be interviewed and him giving so much information, such is a gift and has never really happened before with great literature. We've never had the means of knowing a great author while enjoying his books, especially when they aren't even finished yet. It's an important story, and I'm so glad you're getting recognized for your videos. i know how much hard work goes into making a video, so thanks for all your work and being recognized for it. Be careful about the media. I have great respect for real journalism, but there are so many out there who don't follow that hard line to do the research, get the facts straight and only report those! But, all of that aside, great job. Your view on ASOIAF it's really interesting and does make sense if you've read all of GRRM's writing. It's pretty obvious that it's about trauma from war, ptsd, senseless death and what the planet does with that, because the planet feels it too.

Peston, I been a huge proponent of yours since your first video, your pink letter video about 2 years ago. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video by chance all those years ago and had the opportunity to forward your new videos to my friends to enjoy.I like when you baffle me with out of this world tin foil and feel even better when I see eye to eye with you, posting comments, etc. I love your takes, your wit and am grateful for all your wonderful videos. you are most def a great and integral part of this community. I think you are highly intelligent and articulate And I couldn't be more stoked or happy for your success I can only hope that you are actually making some good bank from all your hard work. With that being said; ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR DAMN MIND? As Butch from PULP FICTION would put it-QUENTYNS DEAD BABY, QUENTYNS DEAD. His arch is pure perfection, brilliant and wrapped tight with a nice little bow on it. Its an anti-Kerouac story a deconstructed take on the adventure trope. It shows Doran is a stupid ass who loves kids but then sends his only son on a fools errand. Even his close friend Drink drops his swag demeanor and calls him out before the dragon foley because its such a fools errand. Its about how hard it is for a son to live up to his fathers standards, about a boy willing to do anything to have his father respect him and pat him on the back. Its what every man has to deal with, stepping out of his father's shadow. And Doran cast a huge shadow being the leader and prince of his country. The reason I love these books is because at its heart ASOIAF is a bunch of short stories with a bigger universe at its core, its an anthology series really. Im sure you like me are a fan of TALES FROM THE CRYPT, TWILIGHT ZONE, TALES FROM THE DARK SIDE, etc These books contain short stories blended into a bigger universe with its own stories to be told. Similar to the DARK TOWER series (King combined all his previous works into one bigger whole)or DC/MARVELL comics universes, the 90s OUTTER LIMITS did this as well or AMERICAN HORROR STORY to a lesser degree. GRRM has always been an anthology writer inspired by these short stories that share a collective universe. Think about it, in 1 chapter ARYA does her thing while in the next DAVOS does his thing and , JON SNOW plot deals with the grand universe.they have a story One chapter is horror like the red wedding in STORM while then theres a funny one like the Squishers tale from FEAST . What I can't get my head around is how someone so smart and well read could be so short sided, off base and just plain out wrong about something so obvious. I mean you can obviously write and I assume you studied creative writing. Cant you see this? I can tell you as a want-to-be writer, its really, really hard. Heck, even writing the worst professional script in the history of tv , film is hard, let alone a sweeping fantasy epic. GRRM is just one person, no one is smart enough or has a memory good enough to be able to twist and stretch all these event, places, characters around. I know the devil is in the details, but the poor guy is just one man. Its just impossible for one person to be that detailed and precise let alone a hippie writer. If you break down every minute sentence and word you can twist anything the man writes into whatever you want it to be to prove a point. If QM is indeed alive, and he most def isn't I would say GRRM has jumped the shark even. Okay my friend, sorry for the really long post. Thanks for getting me and keeping me passionate and excited about ASOIAF. I haven't read them since last spring and although I decided I'm not watching this season, and even though I'm convinced GRRM will not be finishing this series theres a tiny part of me that holds out hope that theres a chance because of people like you and RADIO WESTEROS, UNSPOILED, BFISH ETC. Thanks for the fun!

I respectfully disagree. Quentyn's story, IMO, is a fable (in part) about being a good person without the moral fortitude to challenge atrocities. Quentyn was a nice kid who fails immediately in the hero's quest by refusing to resist or question his father. He is a good soldier who does as he was told. Making his journey into a chivalrous quest was Quentyn talking himself into war and atrocities as glory, as people will do about war. His father knew he would do anything to please him, and also to not be humiliated, and set him up to either steal a dragon, or fail with Arianne as the beneficiary of the failure (part of the greater Dornish Master Plan). Doran is "the princely sort", willing play high born children like chess pieces, and Arianne is his chosen queen...or "king", but under Dornish law. I'm probably wrong about at least half of this. ;) But I believe that Doran is going to back f'Aegon, not Daenerys. I agree that Quentyn was a distraction from the *real* Dornish Master Plan, and I am interested in what you have to say about Doran not wanting to steal a dragon. I've kind of theorized that Doran set Quentyn up to fail, but being able to steal a dragon would be a "value added", if unexpected, benefit to sending him to Meereen. Do you believe that Marwyn is related by marriage to Doran, and that they would have some [long forgotten by most] knowledge about your theory about dragon riding and hatching genetics? Will have to check out the Esquire piece. Congratulations!

I think a more correct interpretation is Quentyn is dead, and given that he was the only point of view character in the room, he had to observe what was happening for the sake of the narrative. Had he died instantly, it would have read "Quentyn turned and threw his left arm across his face to shield his eyes from the furnace wind... END CHAPTER (Because he died suddenly, and dead people can't narrate)

I just noticed that the video for "What You Are Missing 3.7" is tagged with a picture of Jaime who is noticeably missing a hand. To see if this was a running gag, I looked at the playlist. The only comparables were 2.10 that shows Arya missing most of her hair, and 3.1 where Davos is conspicuously missing his fingerbones. But that's just 3 out of 26, so it's probably not a real thing. But it should be. There are so many characters with missing bits.

Preston, I know it's been YEARS since any action was on this video, but I recently discovered a bit of Stuart history which Quentyn's story seems (at least to me) to be directly pulled from. It's from English history, yes, specifically under the Stuart dynasty (I seem to recall GRRM saying in an interview he was inspired partly by the Stuart dynasty for the Targaryens in exile, but that's my memory at work, so take that for what it's worth). In any case, the history: Charles I, was not supposed to be his father's heir, his older brother Henry was, but Henry died of typhoid fever, leaving Charles his father's heir. Charles was not known for being that handsome (his older brother once teased him for having "rickety legs", nor was he see as a golden boy like his older brother Henry had been. However he was his father's heir and so a great match had to be made for him. An idea was proposed for Charles to be betrothed to a Princess of Spain, Charles and his buddies got the notion into their head that they'd travel to Spain themselves for Charles to ask the Infanta himself, and that he and his companions would do so in disguise passing as a common merchant for most of the trip. It was an idea out of a chivalric romance and Charles was a keen reader of those so he liked the notion. Heck, just to give you an idea of the kind of people on the party with him: the Duke of Buckingham, Charles' best friend, was more charming and handsome than Charles was (remind you of someone?). The trip was plagued with hazards and not all of Charles' buddies made it, but eventually Charles did get to Spain, and he did ask the Infanta to marry him, and she was at first shocked who she thought was a common merchant was in fact the Prince of Wales her parents had been negotiating to betrothe her to, and then seeing he was likely to pull many other crazy stunts like this, ultimately refused his offer. Charles slunk home in humiliation from the entire affair. Found that out from a documentary about the Stuart dynasty that you can find here on KZbin (specifically one which is about a minor lordly Welsh family which rose in power thanks to the Stuart dynasty, and stopped existing along the same time as the Stuarts--one of the sons of that family traveling and dying on the way to Spain). ETA: Found the title if you want to check it out yourself: The Stuarts A Bloody Reign. So, given that it's plainly clear GRRM isn't "subverting the Hero's Journey" but instead is repackaging history here, I think you have another tool in your arsenal when someone brings up the "subverting the Hero's Journey" argument when arguing about whether Quentyn is alive or not. It's not so much subversion, as it is history repackaged.

Nettles was a dragonseed, aye. Dragonseeds are the populace of Dragonstone, not necessarily direct sons and daughters of Targaryens. Dragonseeds are also mostly descended from male Targs pre-Conquest or until Good Queen Alysanne, who practiced the first night rite. Nettles most likely does not have the dragon x gene.

If Illyrio had no intention of hatching dragons, why did he give Dany the dragon eggs? They are (apparently) extremely expensive/valuable for him to give them as a gift if he was merely feigning his support for her and had no intention of her or her brother taking the Iron Throne, and possibly even planning with Varys to assassinate her.

+Wolf AU I suspect that Illyrio was giving her and her eggs to Red God extremists in Asshai in order to please them. Though I'm super confident on that. All we know is Jorah really really wanted to take Dany to Asshai and Illyrio seems to be want to please the religion of the Red God.

Preston Jacobs So... Step 1. Give Dany dragon eggs and send with her Jorah who is loyal to Varys (your friend, maybe). Step 2. Have Jorah repeatedly try to get her to go to Asshai, and she will bring with her the eggs. Step 3. Have Jorah and Doreah manipulate events to try to see Viserys come to harm (giving her one less reason to stick around). Step 4. Someone in or near Asshai intercepts Dany and the eggs as a sort of "gift" (for reasons unknown). Something like that? That still raises the issue of the assassination attempt by Varys (unless Illyrio and Varys are not working as closely together as it may appear, which would make sense if Illyrio is supporting the Red God, either as a true believer or merely faking it for political reasons, and Varys is sincere about his hatred of magic, particularly fire magic, but he could be lying about how he was mutilated).

***** That works if you believe in prophecy (which I think I still do). If you subscribe to Preston's idea that prophecy is BS, then it would have to be someone like Quaithe influencing multiple people to try to lead to the dragons being born (Daenerys, Illyrio, possibly someone in Asshai, Mirri and/or Marwin and possibly others, such as to try to result in Viserys and Drogo dying).

Nice. Looking forward to other Q&A episodes. Do you have any plans to make this a more/less regular series, like answering questions after finishing each series?

preston, are you going to talk of the princess of Dorne - doran, elia and oberyn mother - in the Deep Dorne series? She is the reason of Doran and Oberyn are so pro-Rhoynar, she also sent Oberyn to Oldtown when he was very young, he must have had older companions, loyal to the Princess - maybe even Marwyn was her agent in Oldtown. I would also like to know what you think of each of the Sand Snakes missions? And where is Septa Eglantine and the rest of the Lannister guards? If they all escaped with Myrcella, Doran knows about the swap than why is "desert girl" going to KL, and putting Tristane life at risk.
