Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang - The isle of view

I think of a lot of people when I hear this song. My favorite line in the song is "I found a picture of you; those were the happiest days of my life." Mostly I think of my mom who died at an early age from cancer and my brother who died in Vietnam. Hope this song gives people inspiration to move forward, but to never forget the special ones in their lives that gave them so many great memories. Maybe after we have passed on our friends and family will cherish us as we do our special people. So, look at your pictures and relive the wonderful moments. God Bless

That's so tender thank you for sharing. I think of my mother's world ,my dad's world- how unfair it was then. What does it matter if you have spectacles on your eyes but autumn in your heart. Isaac Babel

Chrissie Hynde dedicated this song to Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman-Scott who was her dear friend and died aged 25 of an accidental drug overdose in June 1982. It was recorded a few weeks after his death, in July of that year. On the record you can really hear the emotion in her voice, the record's producer said she struggled to keep it together. She was also 3 months pregnant when she recorded it. The lyrics were written about her partner Ray Davies, and the breakdown of their relationship. But when Honeyman-Scott died, the meaning changed. The words have a real sense of tragedy and nostalgia. They make me think of people parted forever in wartime. The line that get me every time is: '...Like a break in the battle, was your part, In the wretched life of a lonely heart'.
war is the worst...peace on earth folks and enjoy this classic song!

This is such a beautiful rendition of this song. This song has always been emotionally charged for me. I know it's about the death of James Honeyman Scott, who I greatly admired and it just happened to come out at a time when a very close friend of mine died in a car accident at the age of 18. I always associate this song with my friend Kevin. The lyrics "I found a picture of you. Those were the happiest days of my life" almost always brings me to tears every time.

As a teen suffering quietly in my bedroom one night (adolescence and its oft ugly metamorphosis), listening to a Westwood One broadcast highlighting the Pretenders, I had a strong emotional connection with this song. It happened right after hearing the heartbreaking lead-in of the reason behind it. What followed, a haunting live version that brought me to tears. This is maybe the most wonderfully beautiful and sad song about incredible loss, of its time...

All the greatness of Chrissy’s voice, the amazing words that bring one back in time, her real emotion, never gets old, just so sentimental though. I also love Martin’s percussion skills as it matches Chrissy’s vibrato like the beat and her voice are one instrument. Love it to the day I die. Thanks KZbin for allowing all of us to watch these videos instead of the cheesy, pricey, Time Life records.

Lyrics I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh What hijacked my world that night To a place in the past We've been cast out of? Oh oh oh oh Now we're back in the fight We're back on the train Oh, back on the chain gang A circumstance beyond our control, oh oh oh oh The phone, the TV and the news of the world Got in the house like a pigeon from hell, oh oh oh oh Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies Put us back on the train Oh, back on the chain gang The powers that be That force us to live like we do Bring me to my knees When I see what they've done to you But I'll die as I stand here today Knowing that deep in my heart They'll fall to ruin one day For making us part I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh Those were the happiest days of my life Like a break in the battle was your part, oh oh oh oh In the wretched life of a lonely heart Now we're back on the train Oh, back on the chain gang

This is a tribute to James Honeyman-Scott, the Pretenders guitarist who died of a drug overdose in 1982 at age 26. Scott's death was followed by bass player Pete Farndon's 10 months later. Farndon had been kicked out of the band because of his drug problems and died of an overdose. God I love this song from the first time I saw video in the 80s and still rocks ◕ ‿ ◕

It actually started out about Ray Davies. Chrissie said that she found a photo of Ray after they split up, hence the opening lyrics. It was in the mix for a while and then she finished it after JHS died and it took on a different resonance.
