1. If you're fresh out of high school... Think about taking 2 summer classes at community college. You're not a kid anymore, 'summertime off' is OVER.. DEAL WITH IT. By taking two summer classes right after your Senior year graduation, you lighten your load for you first fall semester at College. Its simple logic. (and do that every summer, then pickup a part time job too) 2. Make sure you're taking TRANSFER CLASSES, if you intend to transfer to a 4 year college.... AND.. Not all TRANSFER CLASSES are accepted to BOTH UC and CS schools... DOUBLE CHECK YOUR CLASSES. 3. PART TIME STUDENT SUCCESS. I was working full time and going to night school. I took 2 evening/night school classes per semester, YEAR-ROUND, for 3 years and I got my AA/AS degree, and three Career Certificates, in Elect/Mech Design Drafting and CAD. My pay when I started school was $8.50 to $9.00 per hour. 3 years of Community College, 1/2 time evenings, I got my degree, after 2 years more working my new job skills, my pay rose to $22. per hour... I more than DOUBLED MY PAY with a Community College degree. YOU can do it too. 4. Planning to transfer to a 4 year? 4 year universities have a 50% dropout rate the first year. The second year, nearly 40% of the remainder dropout. UCI, UCLA, UC Berkley LOVE Community college graduates.. They have a lot of empty seats, after shedding their first two year failures. So, work hard, get good grades, and make sure to take ALL TRANSFER UNITS. You have already proved you're smarter than the average at UCLA, by entering as a Jr, with NO SCHOOL DEBT. cha-ching - you just saved $100,000 over your peers at UCLA... OH, and BTW, your final degree at UCLA, will look just like theirs... Or UCI, or UC Berkley

A bit of info. for first time college students. Most people don’t finish a 2 year school in 2 years it usually take 2 and 1/2 to 3 years. The same goes for 4 year schools. Most people don’t actually finish in 4 years it’s usually 4 and 1/2 to 5 years because of and depending on when a course you need is offered (spring or fall only courses), prerequisites, remedial courses needed before taking general education courses...
@jasonjackson45552 жыл бұрын
Tip 9 is the TRUTH! Never lose sight of the goal! I transferred from SMC to UCLA years ago and saw so many people give up and drop out. You have to stay on mission at all times because there are so many distractions at community college. Take an inventory of your friends. I made friends with people who were dead serious about transferring and got rid of everyone who just wanted to smoke cigarettes and play hackey sack outside all day. I definitely felt the stigma of being a community college student and was hell bent on transferring as soon as possible. It felt surreal to go to orientation at UCLA because it was my life’s dream to study there. Good luck to everyone!

Does everyone have to give the placement test? Like is it compulsory for those who have already given the SAT and have a good score?
@arag60916 жыл бұрын
Rutabish Not everyone. Although some schools make you take placement tests if you score below a certain number. If you recieved good scores you just have to take the accuplacer test which is different from a placement test. But then again this is only some schools. Make sure to research schools near you.
@lyrac7236 жыл бұрын
For us the English placement I had to take but I took it when I had ap language since it was a dual enrollment class. The math placement test I didn't have to take because I took ap calculus and passed. It really just depends on what classes you took in hs and what your cc will allow.

Hey, first off great video, it helped me a lot.. I have a few questions -Is the application process the same for international students? -Degrees of a community college are the same of degrees of a college? like If I major psychology, can I transfer to a uni or college to take a master in criminology? or do I have to study 2 years minimum at the cc and then transfer to a college, major in psychology and then take a phd? -Can i get a real job after community college? or it has less value than normal colleges and universities? Thanks a lot!
@whosaidthat847 жыл бұрын
Me&Meself the app for international students is a little different. check with your local institution and also check with the American college you want to attend. standards are higher to get in for international students. -as for degrees at a CC, most only offer certificates or associate's degrees, which are two year degrees. by themselves, they're not worth a whole lot, but if you are applying for a job then it'll spruce up your application -you can transfer from a community college to a university (or Uni, as some know it) to get a bachelor's. know that community colleges don't offer the same as a four-year university. there seems to be some confusion there in your comment -as I mentioned earlier, an associate's degree from a CC, alone, isn't likely to get you a job but it can make your application fancier. if you transfer, you have to have a declared major but once your in a university, you can change majors.

Hey! Thank you for the comment! Community college is technically supposed to be two years minimum, but I do know people who took less time than that! It depends on your major and how fast you finish your general education classes and any major requirements you have! :)

Thank you so much for your nice videos! They helped me a lot. And I have a question, As you mentioned that you were enrolled into UC Berkeley in the Spring semester, does it mean that you submitted the application at a time different than the usual date(half a year later)? Or was is like UCB just told you that you're accepted to start school in the Spring semester but not in the Fall semester after the summer...? Thanks!
@aprilweicosplay8 жыл бұрын
Oh and another question, Do we show our extracurricular experiences in our transfer application? Do you think having leadership experiences or internship or being involved in some clubs or volunteering are important in order to transfer? My goal is Industrial Engineering in UCB, and I wish I can maximize my chance to get in there :)
@kimikochelsea8 жыл бұрын

I think having leadership experiences are important to have in order to show you are a well rounded student! I think it helps balance out your entire application/show the schools that you are committed to your passion and it shows what you do with your free time. That being said, if you don't have time for these things I would say at least join a club and be a member(not a club leader) so you have more time to do other things. But, as always having a strong GPA is the most important thing!

Hi! Congrats on picking out which community college you want to go to! Normally you can apply directly on the community college's website! You just input all of your information like address, name, social security number, etc! Then after that they will send you an email with more instructions on what to do next. After that, you will probably take a placement test and then you can move onto registration! :) You can totally do it! Let me know if you have any more questions!
