I feel like GTAIV does a great job of capturing a late-autumn kind of timeframe. The days are getting shorter, the sun hangs more dimly in a pale blue sky casting this weak blue-green light over everything, all the natural colours are small patches of muted oranges and greens, contrasted against an overwhelming concrete grey and rust brown of the city towering and sprawling over everything… This also gives this whole feeling that the game is all about the city. Your story is just another series of events among the millions of everyday events happening within it. It’s the kind of oppressive and grim aesthetic that not many games have succeeded in pulling off without appearing boring or unimaginative, but it only adds to the narrative of this game.

00:40 I agree and kind of disagree. Empty liminal spots are littered throughout the map in GTA IV, they're just blended in so good that they're hard to find. Just one from the top of my head is if you walk from the apartment where you find Lyle Rivas towards the Fire Station of that district (further upwards is Michelle's house) you'd find just before (i think) the intersection from the Fire Station and a sort of park/ promenade on the left side (which is also interesting on its own) a small alleyway which leads to a totally empty square lot with nothing but a garage door. Also the space on the left side of the bridge to Alderney from Algonquin is a big parking lot with lots of alleys and a really bleak playground. There are several more spots like the tightly packed houses behind the bar in Dukes in the northeastern side (i just woke up so im having trouble remembering the names of places 😭) but yeah the alleyway down the row of houses is a really cool place. Another cool place is the apartment in Broker too i think where the ULP guy sends you on a mission to break into a house and log onto a laptop and check the emails of rhis certain person. That house is super cozy and is such a vibe. Even places in the DLCs such as in TLAD : the angels of death clubhouse or the apartment where you rescue Ashley from the first time has a lot of detailing and honestly is such a vibe. Sometimes liminal sometimes just atmospheric. Good video nevertheless man. Btw those texture glitches you see only happen on the pc port afaik because the port is broken. But if you're playing on console then i stand corrected. If its pc, turn on console gamma from display menu if using fusionfix and get a mod called "VariousFixes" which fixes most of the texture issues with the game.

I remember being overjoyed at the fact that you could fly through the city, hit a low brick wall, and watch Nico go flying out the window, across the road, colliding with tons of cars on his way along, before skidding to a stop, usually dead, in some gutter. And by the end of October (if my memory serves me right) the city closes Coney Island cuz it’s only really a seasonal amusement park. Once it gets cold it’s closed. Guess that’s what rockstar was going for. Would’ve been cool to see the map in game change thru seasons but the game only cycles thru the same season

In GTA 3 the concrete portion north of Portland in game is used to prevent water from spilling into the tunnels since most of that roads decline into it is below sea level, but developement wise I've always head cannoned it to sheer laziness because they didn't know what to put there, one thing to support my theory is that back when the game was in early development there was supposed to be a power plant there and I am almost certain when it was there, the concrete barriers didn't exist.

So the reason why GTA IV feels so real is because they basically did try to make it feel that way, the city itself is the real protagonist in these games.
