I feel like GTAIV does a great job of capturing a late-autumn kind of timeframe. The days are getting shorter, the sun hangs more dimly in a pale blue sky casting this weak blue-green light over everything, all the natural colours are small patches of muted oranges and greens, contrasted against an overwhelming concrete grey and rust brown of the city towering and sprawling over everything… This also gives this whole feeling that the game is all about the city. Your story is just another series of events among the millions of everyday events happening within it. It’s the kind of oppressive and grim aesthetic that not many games have succeeded in pulling off without appearing boring or unimaginative, but it only adds to the narrative of this game.

I always felt like the unsaturated colors of GTA IV matched perfectly with how the character perceived the world. Niko was a dark man, and his story is traumatic and depressing. Maybe the grayish vibe of the game was just how Niko saw the world around him...

00:40 I agree and kind of disagree. Empty liminal spots are littered throughout the map in GTA IV, they're just blended in so good that they're hard to find. Just one from the top of my head is if you walk from the apartment where you find Lyle Rivas towards the Fire Station of that district (further upwards is Michelle's house) you'd find just before (i think) the intersection from the Fire Station and a sort of park/ promenade on the left side (which is also interesting on its own) a small alleyway which leads to a totally empty square lot with nothing but a garage door. Also the space on the left side of the bridge to Alderney from Algonquin is a big parking lot with lots of alleys and a really bleak playground. There are several more spots like the tightly packed houses behind the bar in Dukes in the northeastern side (i just woke up so im having trouble remembering the names of places 😭) but yeah the alleyway down the row of houses is a really cool place. Another cool place is the apartment in Broker too i think where the ULP guy sends you on a mission to break into a house and log onto a laptop and check the emails of rhis certain person. That house is super cozy and is such a vibe. Even places in the DLCs such as in TLAD : the angels of death clubhouse or the apartment where you rescue Ashley from the first time has a lot of detailing and honestly is such a vibe. Sometimes liminal sometimes just atmospheric. Good video nevertheless man. Btw those texture glitches you see only happen on the pc port afaik because the port is broken. But if you're playing on console then i stand corrected. If its pc, turn on console gamma from display menu if using fusionfix and get a mod called "VariousFixes" which fixes most of the texture issues with the game.

Ah GTAIV. I forget sometimes that GTA used to exist without Take-Two prioritizing selling Shark Cards to little kids. And GTAIV is back from the when all the OG Kings were at Rockstar. 😢 I wonder what kind of parallel world exists, when GTAV was Rockstar’s priority, instead of GTA:O. I wonder if that parallel world got the GTA game with the map of every GTA map combined into one giant map.

I remember being overjoyed at the fact that you could fly through the city, hit a low brick wall, and watch Nico go flying out the window, across the road, colliding with tons of cars on his way along, before skidding to a stop, usually dead, in some gutter. When I finally got a PC fast enough to play it properly, I got a trainer that had a ragdoll mode, so no matter where you were or what you were doing, you could just ragdoll and have a nice seat on a bench, even if Nico did look like you'd removed all the bones from his body and he was just flapping around on a seat.

@6:12 idk if your from New York or even the U.S. but this park area is a depiction of Coney Island Amusement park at the southern tip of Brooklyn, New York, and at the time the events of GTA 4 take place I would say it’s the middle of fall due to the visible breaths coming from peoples mouths cuz it’s so cold, or the car exhaust being visible where it wouldn’t be when it’s warm. And by the end of October (if my memory serves me right) the city closes Coney Island cuz it’s only really a seasonal amusement park. Once it gets cold it’s closed. Guess that’s what rockstar was going for. Would’ve been cool to see the map in game change thru seasons but the game only cycles thru the same season

In GTA 3 the concrete portion north of Portland in game is used to prevent water from spilling into the tunnels since most of that roads decline into it is below sea level, but developement wise I've always head cannoned it to sheer laziness because they didn't know what to put there, one thing to support my theory is that back when the game was in early development there was supposed to be a power plant there and I am almost certain when it was there, the concrete barriers didn't exist.

The 4 video is here! The best map, honestly. Also, you should check out the industrial area on the first island.

At first, i thought this was a mobile game "GTA 4 World Tour". Then i remembered, GTA 4 was just an awesome map.

Some places are places there and detailed because of discarded missions and some of them were used on the DLCs, the carnival in Broker for example is used in the last mission of The Ballad of Gay Tony.

About your comment on the floating grass. GTA 4 automatically generates grass, and then despawns it when it is outside of your view. There is a full video about it by TJGM talking about it.

at 8:46 that alley is the alley that the first safe house is in, in chinatown wars which is set in the same liberty city as gta 4. A cool idea for a video could be comparing certain spots in chinatown wars and in gta 4, there are some interesting differences.

great video of an amazing game. You analyze map and this is the wonderful thing about this game. How beautifully chaotic the map seems, it all integrates to a real, normal NY it's like you are walking there. And if you have the PC to run it, and a 4K tv, connecting those two and putting this gem on, at 60fps, 4K, aren't you a lucky one??

In almost all games prior to GTA 5, there was an aesthetic line to follow. GTA 5 itself has an aesthetic line, but it is so subtle that it seems simple "photorealism" without more. And in my opinion it makes it look like he has less of an identity.

So the reason why GTA IV feels so real is because they basically did try to make it feel that way, the city itself is the real protagonist in these games. I feel like the map is so densely packed with little details and those are basically absent in V because of all the assets from other Rockstar games that game reuses

so weird seeing Liberty City in full third person 3D when I got so used to seeing it top-down in Chinatown Wars on the DS. I'm not sure but I think those train tracks are right outside the very first home base in CTW. good video!
