Just some quick maintenance on a Prevost 45xl here in the shop.

The 60 Series is one of the best Diesel engines ever made, they had a long production run, 25 years or more before they were replaced with the DD15 series. Truckers still love them to this day!

Every engine has it's advantages and disadvantages, the 12.7 series 60 is definitely the best around engine with the least downside. The only real downside to a series 60 is when it comes to pulling power, they just don't pull hard like a 15L or 16L even with similar ratings. I re-powered my prevost xl-45 with a 600hp 12.7 series 60 when the 8v92ta broke for the last time. That swap removed 1200 lbs from the rear of the coach.

I have the same engine in my 40 foot prevost bus conversion. When I'm not towing my 7000lbs jeep and the coach isn't loaded down, driving on the interstate is like driving a 50,000lbs Cadillac! Smooth and fast as you want. Tons of fun to drive.

Yes! Nothing like the sound of the whine of straight cut timing gears. The 60 Series sounds somewhat similar to the CAT 3406 engines as well because of that aspect.

First coach I’ve seen on your channel with disc brakes! Didn’t think they ever used them. Biggest solid rotors I’ve ever seen too!

Most new trucks and buses are equipped with disc brakes. Much easier maintenance than drum brakes and more reliable.

When Roger Penske bought Detroit Diesel from GM, the agreement only allowed him to produce the Series 60 for GM for ten years before he owned the rights to it. He then took Detroit Diesel from a liability to profitability in a year! Employees became team players because of the way he treated them.

You are so right the old two stroke is like a model T ford compared to a 60 series. It's entertaining to watch two strokes being worked on, but all you can do is shake your head when you think of the high maintenance , fragility, belching smoke and low horsepower. They might have been ok 75 years ago but high quality four-stroke diesels make them look just plain silly in modern times.

Sorry what? Packed with sensors, computers, valve trains, atrocious little room to work around and lower quality parts. There's a reason 2 stroke Detroits are (generally) tough as hell.

My mistake for not clarifying the era of engines that I was talking four stroke versus two-stroke. But you take a 3406 Cat like I had- never did a thing to it you couldn't break it tough as nails had 800,000 miles on it didn't burn oil, ran like a clock never failed ,simple as all get out you compare that to those two strokes? Same with the old 5.9 Cummins .lt is rare but not unheard of to see a million miles on a 5.9 Cummins WITHOUT an overhaul ,try that with a two-stroke what a joke, it's laughable how much better the four-stroke is, not even a close - sorry fellas.

Sorry Bill, but the "Crown Royal" conversions were done on a Prevost bus in Indiana by Monaco! The Bus (Shell) was made in Canada, but the "Coach" part was all done in the states!

Hi Scott and Tyler, I live in the UK so why do some US coaches have the tag axle behind the main rear wheel, whilst some have it in front? Is it to do with whether the tag axle is steerable? Also, just wanted to congratulate you on having started up your business from scratch on your present site. You should be very proud of what you've achieved. The radiator was cold the first time. Once it warms up, the fan clutch will engage.

Stick with the XLII pre emissions series 60. The new Volvo engines are nice with plenty of power but they do have lots of problems with the DPF system, like all diesel engines after 2010! Had one and went back to a XL40 Marathon with a pre emissions series 60 and love it!

All of the metal can be recycled, as well as the used oil for now. Scott was considering an oil heater for the shop, where he could use the old oil.

What is the three way valve? What does it do? How do you know it’s defective? I heard you say the five way valve and the purpose of manually manipulating the air bags to level the coach. What year? Mileage?

Scott, I'll take a picture of a New Flyer brake rotor when I get back to work on Tuesday and send it to you via Instagram direct message. They're larger than that tag axle unit and vented on every axle. The articulating 60 footer will stop in a shorter distance at 20 MPH than the 2 axle 40 and 35 foot coaches.

Did you see them AFTER the tensioner had been reactivated? They don`t let them flop around like that in road service. Same thing on the big blower units on the older MCI coaches that were up above the engine in the blower bay. You release the tensioners if going to be parked for a long time or if need to remove the belts for access to something.

So what’s your opinion on the new Super Single on the drive axles. The 2017 Prevost H I drive has them. I’m not crazy about them myself. At least with the duels you could at least limp the bus off at the nearest exit. You don’t have that luxury with the super single tires

I ran super singles on a KW truck. Flat tires are rare these days and when you do get a leaker, they have such a huge volume of air in them that it takes forever for them to go flat.

I prefer duals anyday over super singles. Better traction, better water or snow or slush dispersal in extreme conditions, and yes, the ability to limp limited distances on one tire if its mate has failed. Super singles are good at one thing, reducing overall weight, so if you`re one of those carriers who promises their customers that you can carry 48,000 on a tandem configuration, then SS is the way to go, but when push comes to shove, the dual config still reigns supreme.

I much prefer duals over super singles because of bad weather performance. I dove part time back in the 90’s for a company that replaced their entire fleet with KW’s with disc brakes and super singles and didn’t car much for either of them. I drove in the DC Metro area and as long as the road was dry the super singles were great but if it was raining, sleeting, or snowing than that was a different story as for the disc brakes at least back then in heavy traffic the disc brakes did not work as well as drum brakes to me they seemed to suffer brake fade from heat build up when compared to trucks with drum brakes. I think the disc brakes would be fine flat land trucking but driving in heavy traffic or on winding twisting roads with hills they reminded me of driving 1960’s land yachts or trucks with drum brakes that you got a couple of good hard stops and the next time you better just toss out the anchor because the brakes had gone on vacation. The company took it on the chin and dumped almost half of the KW’s with the Super Singles and Disc brakes well before the least on them was up in favor of Mack’s with duals and drum brakes because of accidents by drivers who had perfect driving records and drivers who quite because they hated the KW’s so much.

When was the last time the trans fluid and filters were changed? This isn’t something to over look either. Transynd fluid is a must, make sure those filters are OEM and not after market trash. What about the coolant?

You got to start looking at alternative power electric or hydrogen fuel cells, 7 Years Time these diesel buses will be banned from the road already phasing out the gas buses they haven't been out long the quicker you do it the better better for everybody's health and the environment. Have you spoken to them bus manufactured are they planning on doing conversion kits
