It's about time we had another Predator movie, where the Predator is legitimately terrifying. The beauty of the first movie is it's these muscle bound, 6'3, armed to the teeth, trained mercenaries shitting themselves as it closes in; whereas this one it's the lack of technology and proper defences against something far superior than them.

Just when you think a franchise is dead, wow, I absolutely loved this. Keep it simple stupid holds true, this had a 'thriller/horror' vibe to it and whomever designed the look of the predator in this one did amazing, absolutely horrific looking, couldn't tell at times if it was practical or CGI, just know it was grotesque in a good way. Give the makers of this a shot at terminator, Robocop, maybe they can raise those franchises from the dead as well, cheers.

@@hou942 I'm not saying it's a common thing to occur. What I'm saying that all it takes is a good quality movie to resurrect a dead franchise (considering dead franchise as one that has had too many bad movies as you said), I was saying that such an event is possible for every franchise, not that it is a common occurrence. As for examples, I think the X-Men movies went through such process: the first two movies were really good, but the third one was mediocre, and the then the first Wolverine movie was shit, I don't know if two bad movies made it into a dead franchise, but there were projects to make Origin movies for lots of X-Men characters and they got cancelled because of how bad Wolverine was. Then First Class came, and it resurrected the franchise, a good movie that was also a breath of fresh air, and then Days of Future Past was great too, franchise resurrected during that time. Then it got killed again now.

Rethink your friendship… lol. Seriously tho, I think the first predator movie gets seen like that by some people because of the stars (cast) of its time. Seeing muscular people and whatnot can give the felling that it’s about muscle action mainly than anything else to other people. However, Predator 1 is more than just that! And Prey finally, in my opinion, gives us a predator film faithful to the spirit of the first one for the most part. Quality, mindful and creative. Trachtenberg understands that spirit and I hope he remains an overseer of future installments.

Yet the girl only wins by inexplicably being a more skilled fighter than the predator. Edit: For those arguing against me about this, she was fighting it face to face with melee weapons and winning. The teenage Native American girl was spinning and doing backflips off of trees while fighting with stone weapons against a predator, and winning. She wasn't hurt a single time during that fight if I remember correctly, she literally cut off its arm in the first bit of the fight despite not having any experience or training with the kind of weapon she was using, and she was able to outrun it despite it being established to be far faster than any human. Then she had to end the fight with the trap, which would be fine if it wasn't predicated on the Predator stopping in the middle of the mud field DIRECTLY in front of the stationary and easily avoided helmet beam, and using the ranged weapon. Yet even though it used the ranged weapon, it saw the lasers pointing directly at itself... And didn't realize it should step a little to the left or right. Literally one step in either direction would have made this trap USELESS, and I don't see why she didn't just hold and point the helmet herself.

I feel like the biggest missed opportunity to build tension and suspense was the lacknof side effects of that body heat suppression plant/mushroom or what was it. I can buy that there is such a thing, but lowering the core body temperature should cone with some kind of nausea, tremmors, weakness or something. If the protagonist were to gain 'invisibility' at the cost of feeling like shit, that could really ramp up the stakes in the third act. Her fighting like a power ranger seemed a bit too much. Just to be frank, that goes for her brother as well.

If they do continue doing this trend of a Predator throughout history, they need to have the Predator win at some point. Maybe even the next film (if one is being made) so it'll immediately shake up the formula and surprise people that the protagonists don't always win against a race that literally worships the idea of "The Hunt". A monster stops being scary and threatening if it keeps losing.

What I love is that I cared about these characters. That entire tribe. The movie was well written. The foreshadowing from the brother. “I know you will, because you have to.” Naru came into her power as a last resort. Not because she was given some over the top hero ability. The way her journey shadowed the predator. There was a naive aspect to them both. She simply did what the humans always do In these films, adapt faster. I haven’t even mentioned the cinematography. It wasn't as well written as you make it seem. Like why was the forest burn? Why they made the comache warriors kinda stupid. Weren't they hunters? How they didn't realize the situation that they are in? How Taabe knew they can kill the Predator? He didn't see the predator hurt so why the line "if it bleeds, we can kill it"? They bring the French hunters only to be killed when they hind that can be more. They basically did what the old movies did with the natives. And making Predator die by his own weapon, seriously? They made him stupid as well. Oh, and from where does she knows that the Predator has thermal vision? Why the Predator didn't kill her if he deem her not worthy to kill but the man who was badly hurt at his leg was? Better then The Predator, sure, but not close to the original. They put some contemporany tropes and an old setting which is not new also. The concept is not new. The fans of the series made a short film a few years back with the Predator fighting knights in a forest. The movie was titled Dark Ages if I'm not wrong. I don't know if the movie is still uploaded to KZbin or was deleted?

This movie is beyond believability. A little girl gets tossed and slammed to the ground several times by a predator and just bounces back like nothing happened. Also jealousy of your warrior brother's success and getting him killed is okey as long as you bring home some weird creature's head and claim your brother's place even though the village has no idea whatever you just brought. A hatchet with a self made magic rope? The predator picking odd times to forget it has infinite invisibility shield. Its a movie made of dull brains, no wonder the wokies love it. And to think these people believe the Chamanchi would ever give warrior chief title to a woman is the height of delusion. Those days were not the joke these days are. So what happened was he came back to the tree found her unconscious and the lion almost dead. So he finished the lion off, carried her back then went back to take off the lion's head. One of the reasons he sacrificed himself for her in the end is he said she's smarter, better than him. He couldn't admit that before and was making amends.

Weird this movie was on Disney+ for me. It was decent there were many moments where I thought, sure whatever, but the ending really did not do it for me. She seen many members of her tribe die even her brother and when she is named War Chief she has a big smile on her face whilst everyone cheers for her..... Compare that with Dutch at the ending of Predator, physically exhausted, mentally scarred that he lost his team and good friend and probably already riddled with survivor's guilt. Prey was solid nonetheless, a lot better than The Predator. I give it a 6/10

Ever since I saw “Predator 2” and sat in the theater in adoration with the lore; the pistol of Adolini’s from that Yautja clan to Harrigan, after the earlier Predator VHS viewing & all the Dark Horse comics- 30 years later, they finally gave me the prequel I have been waiting for as a longtime 80s fan: a gorgeous film on Comanche life that happens to be a violent as hell Predator prequel. Hopefully, this is just the start and we’ll get Feudal Japan, Norse Viking, etc, etc done authentically & respectfully and if they pulled this off, their “Alien” project could be what I’ve been hoping for but never received from Scott.

The French trappers felt like their were chewing on the scenery like bad guys from a scooby do cartoon. Also The CGI felt half cooked which wouldn’t have held up on the big screen and probably part of the reason it was tv release. Did like this movie, not as good as the first Predator movie, but this was way better than I expected (based on the sequels and spinoffs). I liked when the Predator arrived, the top-down Predator chase in the grass, and Amber Midthunder is not only stunning, she was really awesome as Naru. Dakota Beavers as Taabe was also really good, the whole cast is. That being said, the big issues were the Predator did not follow the rules (killed an unarmed, wounded man just for surprising it, which is not Predator behavior). The original Predator looked way more realistic to me, and that movie was from 1987. The CGI was very CGI at times, but could have been so much worse.

I think the exact same thing about not furthering any specific timeline. I love how the far (for the most part) the Predator has been put in different timelines, fighting different people each time and I think they should continue to do this. My only concern is that in every single movie, essentially, the predator loses and is killed so you always know the new hero is going to win. I'm not sure how to fix that or if it should be fixed at all but I'd like the predator to win too sometimes. Give us some suspense on the ending

5:10 I think the whole “releasing only on Hulu” was 100% because the last Predator was a flop. I personally think Disney didn’t wanna risk Prey doing the same. Supposedly, due to a previously existing contract going back to 20th Century Fox (prior to the Disney acquisition) the next Predator movie released would have gone straight to HBOMax for streaming after finishing its theatrical run. I felt like the movie did a great job and introducing us to a capable but “green” protagonist that survived because of her ability to see and do things differently. It would have been easy to live action Mulan her and have her just better than everyone just because. I felt like it was similar to animated Mulan a girl with courage who was different and overcome not inspite or to spite the others in the story. The story could have easily belittled the tribe, culture and men for the sake of a rah rah women message. It didn’t. It respects her brother, his honor and sacrifice and uses the hints she picks up throughout the story to defeat her overpowered foe. I could have used a trap setup scene because I felt that added to the tension in the original Predator film, but that’s a small gripe overall. I honestly like Predators a lot but this comes close on it’s heals for me and at times surpasses it.

Just watched it over the weekend. Serious thumbs up all round. It's a David V Goliath excellently executed. Very few blips in it. It did have 3 Predator references 2 of which were not required however, the handing over of the pistol at the end was perfect and the only reference point required. It's par for the timeframe. People forget that just a couple hundred years ago everyone had to fight to survive in one way or another very often literally. Specifically a group of individuals that sailed across an ocean to hunt and trap in a foreign land would not allow sheep to come along. Nor would they last long in a group like that. Firstly I love how this predator, since its they're first time on earth, doesn't stalk prey like jungle or city hunter do and takes them one by one but instead since he's on new territory just engages in fight and kills everything that present threat. From snakes, bear to humans. You can clearly see how the actually adopt to hunting human warriors after that in predator and later. I just saw the movie and I agree. I was so deeply saddened when the native "Punch Rocker!" girl's brother was killed. He did really well. I was hoping for a ship to come out of cloak and return her to her village with a gift. What I would like to have seen is that as the creature observes her hunting skill, she gets taken by the french canadian trackers to only be rescued by the thing shortly after the leg iron scene. With the help of the thing, she and her brother decimate the killers, and finally at the end, the legend being told of the sky, or "Ant" people who come out to hunt. Finally as a wonderful grandma, on the mantle of her great grand children's fireplace is the facial apparatus the creature wore. Can you tell I really liked "Aliens Vs Predator" It would seem to convey that at one point in time humans were visited by "Sky People" and had offspring who to this day, give value to Bigfoot Sassquach, and tales of the cave people. (all of which are very similar around the world: this I think for the storyline's sake, would be where the dna line would have corrupted to lates of moronic trolls living under bridges. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ever since the last scene of Predator 2, when the Predator Chief throws Dan Glover the flint lock pistol and says "take it" and it had 1715 on it, I always thought that Predators running around in other time periods would be great. Just explore how other people in other times and cultures dealt with the creature and what it does. Feudal Japan, Vikings, Spartans, South Pacific in WWII, you could do a lot. Hell even a sci-fi version farther into the future on a space colony (which was the location of the original Aliens vs. Predator in the comics). But I was really happy with this movie. It felt like they took the material seriously and just wanted to make a good film. I also liked the two throw backs to Predator 1 and 2 as well as their choice to not subtitle the French trappers when they spoke, because if Naru can't understand them, then why would the audience? Dang. I feel like I've been living on snob island lately.... I COULDN'T EVEN FINISH THIS MOVIE! The dialog felt SO inauthentic and after the first 20 minutes I couldn't take anything the characters said seriously. I also felt that the little preliminary scenes showcasing the Predator before the Tribe engaged with it just took all the mystery and fear out of the character. Like, there was no room for the audience join in on Naru's piecing together the mystery and building fear. I know that might have been hard to do considering most of us already know what the Predator is all about, but it just seemed lazy like, "here's an invisible alien killing and skinning a snake..... be afraid" and "watch this highly advanced alien, who's invisible, kill a coyote... Yeah, that's right, this thing means business". I also thought that Top Gun Maverick was WAY overhyped. Between these two summer flicks, I'm not sure what's going on but I feel like I'm goin a little crazy...

“Predator: Dark Ages” already had successfully (especially for an independent fan film) married the Predator with an historical timeline some 7 years ago. It is easy to assume that Hulu was aware of it, recognized the potential and did their own version. Prey is indeed a nice ride, albeit having some pacing problems and weird behavioral choices.

@@Eazydatdude91 The characters in general came a bit too close to cartoonish in their singlemindedness. Naru, especially, felt a bit too cardboardy. It is very clear that she is aching to prove herself as a capable warrior, but in no moment of the film did it feel like she was in a situation that’s way over her head, which was absolutely the case; it felt like she had too much control of the situation, which makes no sense from a dramatic standpoint. It should feel like she and everyone else are fighting some sort of demon or supernatural identity, as they have no possible understanding of what this thing is; instead, it feels like they are simply fighting a bear that is a bit tougher than usual but nothing to worry about.

@@alexalexis7899 I definitely agree with you to a certain extent for sure. I think Naru herself was written fine, but the supporting characters were 100% how you stated.

@@Eazydatdude91 Oh, I would have responded better to the film if the other characters still were as one dimensional as I said, just as long as she wasn’t; I really don’t think that character was effectively written. Given how the story is setup, I think she could only by portrayed as a resilient character but still behaving very much like she could have her last second on earth at any moment. Not wanting to make a cliche comparison, but think the work Scott and Weaver did with Ellen Ripley: her attitude is dramatically and humanly appropriate to the situation at hand - she pushes forward in the face of extreme unknown danger, but she is grounded because her active goal is just to get as far away from the xenomorph as possible. Naru’s active goal is the same from the first frame to the last: she wants to prove herself as a fighter and, in the context she is in, it ends up bringing it dangerously close to cartoon territory, while if they had written her in the other direction, it would have elevated the film from a mere fun watch to a potentially phenomenal entry for the ages.
