I'd like to add my experience with discus: they were my first 'big' fish after about 3 months of keeping guppies in a 10 gallon. I kept 7 discus, they were super friendly and actually pretty easy to care for. I did water changes once to twice a week and fed them twice a day, 86-89°F. The only reason I let them go was because the tank cracked. It wasn't resting properly on its table, sadly.

Just seeing this video. I have swordtails and platys in my 55. They both have had babies and the tank is so active. Plus I have red male betta and albino corys l. They are all so sweet and don’t bother each other. Love all your videos and watch you guys all the time, even your old videos 😃

One bit of advice I can give for keeping Rams is to do a lot of research on the species you want. I was surprised at what a Bolivian can tolerate compared to German Blue or Gold rams.
@bernardschaumburg3341
@bernardschaumburg3341 2 жыл бұрын
Yep to this. I have naturally hard well water and dont want to chase parameters. I had read that German Blues will acclimate to a wide range and yet have lost them all after they seemingly do well for weeks. My PH is 8, GH is about the same, KH around 12. I realize it's the high end of their tolerance yet thought they'd adjust as I had read. NO! German Blues are finicky and need proper water. This is just my experience...

Rosy barbs are GREAT replacement for goldfish too. You can still keep them in an unheated tank, they get a handsome 4 to 6 inches, you can keep an nice sized shoal in a 40-55 gallon AND they're as tough as nails.

@@knyghtryder3599 I started in the hobby with cichlids and kept them for 12 years or so. For whatever reason I decided I wanted to try goldfish and was sadly disappointed. I didn't have a big enough tank for single tails so I tried fancies and to this day I haven't found a single fish that's harder to keep. I guess it's their wonky genes. Rosy barbs are FAR easier to keep.

Honey gourami are definently amazing trades for betas, I have one in my 200lt (50 gallon) long and he's always at the front of the glass to greet me, when I put my finger against the glass hell swim right up and twiddle his little feelers against the glass in an attempt to see what's up, its adorable, never seen a single moment of aggression from my dwarf honey gourami
@Tool970
@Tool970 2 жыл бұрын
Added side note, just like Betas it's best to have lots of cover, though for Betas one of the main reasons is to hide their sight from other fish to curve aggressive behavior, but for the gourami mentioned they can be very timid and easily spooked by other fish or just by people moving past the tank, so please try out them in a heavily planted tank, even if it's just one corner, the more the better, mine had the same problem when I first moved them in there and the plants were rooting down instead of growing bushy or taller, where he's get scared by the other fish in the tank, and would hide and glass surf all day, but once I got more plants hea much more happy yo engage with me and the other fish because he knows he has a safe place to go if mulm hits the fan

There could be a number of things: quality of the breeding stock, color of the substrate and background, whether or not the are dominant in the tank, breeding activity, and of course - if someone decided to go crazy with the saturation adjustments for their pictures it will give an unrealistic color too.

Ramirezi cichlids (German Blue) are cool species, but they have some specific requirements. The key is they like their water warm (27 °C or 80.6 F at least). It doesn't hurt to give them quality food and have a good filtration. I've got hard water (270 ppm) with high nitrate levels (30 - 40 ppm) at home and the female Ram had even Ich when I bought the pair. They've been thriving. However I agree Bolivian Rams might be easier to keep. I agree platies are more docile than swordtails. With Red Tail Shark barb I thought Red Finned Shark would be good replacement, but I found out Red Finned Shark barb still likes to nip on SAE for some reason. So far it's limited, but I need to monitor the situation. They are in a tank with swordtails. Injured or overfed fish are open game to them, which was the case with one SAE. I had to move the old fish into a large bucket (with an established filter) for a month until it got better.

I have housed rams many times and they end up fighting. Do you have a profile on these? How do I create an environment that they will be able to thrive in? Maybe I didn’t have a big enough group of them, I tried providing more females to male ratio, not the kind of hiding spots they like, I’m really not sure where I’m going wrong but man blue electrics are some of my favorites amongst other rams and I’ve about given up on them. I’m about to create a new 55 gal tank and thinking about returning To an angelfish + buddies type tank. Mostly because they are great but in another video you mentioned geophasgus and severum fish that sounded amaz! will be good buds. I just got a fish order today with one honey gourami (should have been three) and three powder blue gourami. Would adding a beta to the mix be a bad idea?

Probably - we haven’t had luck mixing bettas with any type of Gourami.

Any ideas for Parrot/convicts mixed? I have a chocolate cichlid with a male and I knew parrots and convicts we're aggressive. I wanted to put a Geophagas in there but maybe not a good idea?

I've kept a comet goldfish. Now I keep a small butterfly koi. They are much more hardy, and have more colour and patterns varieties. Thank you for the video! 👍🏻

As long as you are meeting their water parameter requirements. Sometimes, it can be a little challenging finding fish that like the soft water, low pH and warm water.

If you can also add some cycled media in your filter you should be able to add them now.

I will never understand why people say discus are hard to keep. As long as you follow amazon basin water temps aka 76f-86f, and keep your ph between 5.5-7.0 they will breed and thrive like any other SA cichlid in those parameters. Heck ive accidentally had a heater sensor fail raising my temp over 100f. My discus, and rams, and angels were in that for 3 days without my knowledge and they showed no signs of stress. It then took me a 2 days to get a new heater after taking that one out and the water went to room temp of 76f from 102f and they also showed no reaction. These are very very hardy fish.
