This is because after a certain time they get dependent on them like a coping mechanism. This is how addiction (an illness) works and why criminals often fall back into crime even if they know it's bad for them. People like her need professional help and support system to get out of it. It's not so black and white.

For as much of a pill of a human being that Ashley can be, I want her to do well for herself. Leave Vought, take a year long vacation in the Caribbean and become the agent for an indie film studio.
