What sets Homelander apart from the majority of sups is mainly his upbringing. Most sups (Superman being the prime example for obvious reasons) that are represented in media have some sort of morality instilled into them or has something/someone that keeps them in line. However, Homelander has essentially the complete opposite. Being raised in an uncaring laboratory and then allowed to do nearly whatever he wants with next to no negative consequences caused him to become the narcissist that we know and love
