Primitive Skills

Күн бұрын

Hello everyone, my name is Duong.
I am 32 years old.
I live in a poor mountainous area of Vietnam.
From a young age, I had to work hard to help my parents.
Difficult life is always around, I work and learn everything from my grandparents and the old people in the village.
Gradually, I mastered the skills.
5 years ago, I decided to live the challenge.
Determined to learn about the primitive way of life, I chose to live in the wilderness, alone.
Where there's no technology and forcing yourself to pass, it feels great!
How about you? Your life is definitely different from mine.
Have fun watching the video!

Watching this channel while you create this result through each individual painstaking step is a reminder of how much we in the modern world take for granted. Never before did I consider how much work went into making cotton thread, creating fabric from it, crafting the scissors and needles required to hand-make a simple elegant bag. I am humbled by your diligence and self discipline. If I had achieved that, I would be incredibly proud.

When he first made the cloth, I was all excited because I expected something bum-simple, like curtains for the hut and a table-cloth for when the wife visits. As always, Duong's ideas are not simple. I have come to terms with the fact that if I am feeling all smart and say to myself "Oh, they should be doing [X] with [Whatever resource there's a surplus of]," rest assured that they will either do [X] shortly, or have a reason not to do [X] that I missed. I have yet to catch them actually missing a trick over the long term. I still get caught by the fact that Duong's and Hoang's _ambitions_ for their places are far grander than I expect. But, I'm learning.

Hello DUONG, here it is : 2024, I am still here with my family following you from SWITZERLAND (in the center of the European continent) we love you very much, you are truly a good man, and we have been following you for years. my son Jonas Alexis has grown up too, he will be 5 years old this spring. It's Winter here and we have snow on the peaks. Don't worry, it's nice and dry in our old stone house. Unfortunately our house was not built by us and was renovated haphazardly. The floor is made of plastic-cardboard and it doesn't even hold water (it swells if you let the floor pump water). The stone walls are very thick and old, this is really good, however I have to repair it in certain places. Every time I use lime for stone wall repairs, I think of you.

Amazing as always; I struggle just to properly sharpen a pair of scissors or shears - and here you go making a pair from scratch like some sort of alchemist mage! Looks like it's time for a treadle-driven grinding wheel - perhaps your old water-driven one could be adapted to a treadle/pedal/foot-drive?.. ..*brow furrows* are those really the same pair of scissors at 24:30?

I liked the bag very much. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and what you do. While watching you clean up the forge area, I had an idea I'd like to share with you. As I'm sure you know, when clay is fired, it shrinks. This causes cracks to form. To avoid having as many cracks, I would suggest that you crush the clay that has already gotten hard from firing and mix it with the clay you're using to build your next furnace or forge. Because the clay that has already been fired has already shrunk, your new clay mixture won't shrink as much. Therefore, it won't crack as much. I wish you good health and happiness. Thank you.

(14:41) "Look to see if it is flat": that would indeed be the major problem. The cutting must take place along the WHOLE edge, not just here and there. So very good eyesight is essential in ensuring that the each cutting edge touches the other everywhere. Thus "flat" is not really the key word. The touching everywhere IS. As can be seen in scissors that are curved...

Quick questions. What happened to your log workbench? It looked very useful as it helped with working standing up. Also, noticed you have been doing quite a bit of metal work. Would it be better for your spine if you smithed and did your forging standing up? Is there a way to mason some kind of elevated furnace and smithing area with stones and mortar? Separate question. If you fix the water wheel are you going to make a universal joint for it? You can then attach and detach diffrent functions to it. like a grindstone or an arm for the blower or spin a pottery wheel. Maybe even a mil saw And an emergency break for it. I wouldn't worry about the house just yet. Protect your health and back!

IDEA!!! Who needs a waterwheel? You see, weight is always a problem as it ruins the centre shaft. It also splashes a lot, wrecking the wood. Now - hold on: What is Duong missing? Number 1: Air to power the fire. This should be easier now that he can make fabric. He can double up the fabric and semi - water and airproof it. This way he can make a see-saw water powered air bellows. He can rig two bamboo water chutes with a trip switch that alternates them, with a bag under each. Just like the Monjolo, but doubled up. This would be a hands free way of providing serious air. And half of it is already built. He just needs a seperate monjolo on the other side. And everything stays kinda dry. Why? Production time. At some stage, Duong must create a lathe. In order to do that, he needs metal bearings and cogs and shafts. If he builds this air system, that dramatically reduces the time needed to perfect a cog. Once he has his cylinder bearings made, he is good to go with the heavy equipment. Then he can get serious about a proper waterwheel for torque. As you have all seen, Duong did build the waterwheel, but was kind of lost as to what to do with it. Time moves on, and things fail. I'm all up for it. Maybe we can create an "Ideas for Duong" FB page. I really like the idea of people knowing how to crawl out of a stone age. While not wrecking the enviroment. And I think this is a really important point. CONTEXT. Duong lives in a place where trees grow faster than a bankers wallet. Other fans should take their nature into account. Chopping a few trees down for Duong is fine. They will be right back there in 5 years. Not so much in Europe or the US. A European contributor will have to consider that. No 2: He is a content creator and has to take shortcuts. Yes. He showed you how to smelt iron. It is utterly impossible to get a wage from KZbin using all the processes involved each time. To do so would take years between content. There would be no point. So, yes. He does get some ignots in. Same way our Australian friend gets a car up to his neck of the woods. Both guys - (and I consider them perfectly equal in terms of content) do a great service to us. Different cultures, different enviroment, different materials. John is a great guy. So is Duong. So is Lar's over at Survival Russia. These are the real lads. They don't make or do stupid things. Like an "Underground retreat with a swimming pool." These are real skills. For people with a mentality over 5 years old or a tendancy to move more than an inch on their lard ass computer chair.

Oh wow. Those scissors are an accomplishment. Scissors are particlarly hard to hand make because they need two cutting surfaces aligned correctly to cut. Bravo!
