I never felt that Teri was the antagonist. Not when I was a 16 yr. old child watching the movie, nor when I was an 18-22 yr. old young adult watching the TV series. She wasn't perfect, and she had her moments, but at the same time, she had to put up with a lot of foolishness from her family and the men she loved.

@@danimoorehead I assumed Faith is the daughter of Big Momma's sister or the daughter of a best friend who's no longer with us. But my theory hinges on black mama theory that every black mama's tolerance for hoe shit is directly related to whether or not hoe shit worked out for them and making their daughters act according to their own personal regrets. Big momma is way too permissive of her other daughters at Terri's expense and way too like into getting Terri to forgive Faith in a tight time frame to have not been there done that. Because I don't care how kind and religious your mama is she sure will drag a cousins ass if her own kid gets hurt...unless she can relate or is sitting on some info. Why Terri and Faith gotta get along.... 🤔

This really is a hood classic for sure. I remember having the Soul Food VHS back at my grandmothers house. We would watch that shit every time during thanksgiving. We would even eat the same foods from the movie. As an adult it really makes you see how super unhealthy all of it was. I also did not know miles was cheating on his wife while watching it as a kid. I was always so confused when Vanessa Williams was tripping since they would always tell us kids to stop watching during that scene.

In my opinion Teri is a complex character. It makes the audience feel sorry for her and want her to win such as getting a chance of happiness in life due to her family betraying her as Maxine stole her boyfriend Kenny, Faith slept with her husband Miles, and they constantly kept relaying on her for money for financial issues. She was responsible and independent I give her credit for that and I feel like her family should have gave her more recognition and credibility so she can feel loved and appreciated but at the same time Teri was arrogant, cocky, and narcissistic.
