Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

The caution of the dark isn't irrational; it's an evolved survival skill, it's the same as assuming a twig snapping in the bush is some predator. This is due to the false positive of assuming it's a predator has little negative consequences, while a false negative of assuming it's nothing can remove you from the gene pool. This is also why; assuming the dark alley may be hiding some threat is a logical position; while assuming it doesn't lose any threat can end your life.

It needs to be balanced - if you are *too* afraid you will never sleep and die anyway - but your point still stands. There was a woman who was dreaming about a crown of thorns being placed on her head after a night of drinking while camping - she awoke a while later to find a fox eating her scalp as she slept, with chunks of scalp and hair completely gone as the fox had already devoured them. She has one of the worst cases of PTSD I've ever heard of - I thought mine was bad because I scared my wife one night by taking swings in my sleep and knocking everything off the bedside table, but this chick had it way way worse. From not enough fear, to way way too much.

But the light of reason can analyze that darkness better than instinct. The light of reason tells you the darkness of your bedroom at night isn't filled with monsters and predators. The worst threat is your bed corner. But that darkness of an unknown alley in the bad part of town? That's a perfectly rational fear. Let's keep that one. It's useful.

I don’t think darkness is the universal fear of life on earth, as there are many creatures able to see through it or who don’t need to. I feel like a more accurate universal fear of life on earth is sudden loud noises, because in nature a sudden loud noise could be a number of things but all of those things would benefit from the fight or flight reaction.

My 6 year old nephew was afraid of the dark. His 3 year old sister used to walk into dark rooms and turn the light on for him. I sat him down and asked what he was scared of. He said monsters, I asked him who were the scariest people he knew he looked me in the eye and said you and dad (both of us have a violence in us only child abuse can create and it's.obvious over time). I said that's right and can you think of anything scarier than us? He looked me in the eye scared and said no. I asked will me and ya dad always be on your side. He proudly said yes. The. I said if the scariest things you can think of are on your side why be afraid of monsters? He was able to walk into dark rooms after that. Terrifying that worked and saddening that is how his dad and uncle are.

Sound similar to my kids. They get afraid of the dark. Told them that after years in the military and deployments over seas that I learned to become the thing that people feared in the dark. My unit had done so many night time raids, snatched so many people from their homes, and killed terrorists as they thought the night protected them, I never gave it much though of the fear that could induce. Imagine being outside thinking you're gonna attack an enemy just to find out their in your yard as you walk out the door. You're out gunned, out classed, and out played. Thinking that the darkness would help hide you has now become you're biggest disadvantage. Tell my kids that they need to learn to become the things that go BUMP in the night.

I used to get terrible nightmares as a child, all ending the same way: that I was being crushed between two flat walls, each one moving in the opposite direction. Then I watched the old film "Clash of the Titans" and, before bed that night, I looked around in my darkened room. The window had a faint blue glow due to the curtains, and the door I could just make out but seemed more "red" to me. So I imagined two new imaginary friends. One to guard the window, one to guard the door. The Kraken and Medusa. The nightmares stopped then. Sometimes to fight fear one needs to make Fear your friend.

This story reminds me of a movie I was watching on TV about 60 years or so ago. (I was around 10 or 12 years old) It was about 2 am in the morning, on the late, late, movie channel, I was falling asleep and would jerk awake and watch a bit then fall asleep again and repeat. I had seen this at a Drive Inn Theatre and on TV before. Well, the alien was just about to neutralize or shut down all electrical energy all over the whole Earth to show why they shouldn't have attacked him when he stepped out of his saucer, and then imprisoned him, and shot and killed him when he was helped to escape Just as he did, we had a major power failure in my city Seattle. Everything went dark, TV, Lights, all just gone instantly! I woke up so fast from that, I leaped off the couch to look out the window, dark everywhere! I will admit I was scared ***tless After a while in the dark the power came back on, but I was wide awake and couldn't sleep if I wanted to The movie was the 1951 film, "The Day The Earth Stood" still not the remake from 2007 obviously. Yes, I know the robot looked like a giant Rubber suit used as a Robot, but remember it was made in 1951, so no CGI or computer anything at the time

So by telling her interrogators about the Fear, they started worrying about its potential danger to them, thereby allowing it to manifest in the interrogation room. Makes sense. But how would it spread outside of the police dept & gang territory if no one’s around to perceive it? You can’t fear what you’re unaware of, after all. :/

Either it's a darkness that roams so when a well lit street starts getting darker people start worrying and then scared as the darkness starts its act. Or it spread thru the station only for someone outside to notice all the dead or something and it just snowballed.

I was looking for a comment about this. At first they say she is safe so the room *is* Safe for her. Then as everyone gets unnerved, the room slowly gets worse and worse. Really good details in it imo.

What a lot of people are not getting is it's not the fear of darkness, it's the fear the unknown. Darkness can exist while also knowing what is there. The unknown can exist regardless of conditions, it's just removing the sense of sight is the best way to describe the concept of unknown. The human fear of the unknown is a loss of control, a loss of security. The unknown can be a predator that you do know about, but because you don't know WHICH predator makes it so you can't take proper measures to defend yourself. The unknown could be a sound that you can't figure out, and wondering if or when it'll reveal something meant to kill you. So much of human's process of adapting is safely observing that which is unknown, studying it, and then interacting with greater knowledge about it.

Humans true fear really is the unknown, but humans do tend to conquer our fears, and the unknown is no exception to this... some will study it, quantify it, define it to chip away at the fear by making it known... others will come to embrace it, finding solace and peace instead of terror and paranoia... and yet still others will seek it out, finding joy in the fear of the unknown. The child they kidnapped had fear manifest, but during the time they took her... she confronted her fear and realized it for what it is.. irrational paranoia.

I'm not really afraid of the same dark as most folks. It takes an extremely small amount of light in a room to actually render me blind. I think this has given me a bit of a unique issue with actual pitch darkness given that in anything less I see well enough. Pitch darkness though, I see shit. I know having a very active imagination is a thing some people want, but in a pure dark room, you really don't. It becomes a canvas of all the irrational monsterous lunacy of the subconscious mind.
