WOW! This is akin to "Phantom of the Opera" kind of sinister - especially at the end. Never heard a Prince song like dark. Prince... the master of music, period. Thanks for this!

For all who like to take songs and art for that matter out of context this song is based on a line in the Batman movie, that the Joker says to Vickey Vale. Not every song reflects the heart and soul of its writer but is told in third person through a character like in a book or movie script. Its a story, and if your honest no matter your religious faith, you have more than flirted with evil thoughts, intentions and deeds..or in other words Danced with The Devil.

Why do many commenters seem to take this song so literally? It's not Prince's personal beliefs for fucksake. it was based on the Joker's line in Tim Burton's Batman which was based on the "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novels; a track written for that movie originally. "The Dark Knight" is dark, Joker is a Psychotic criminal...Tim Burton was looking for a dark vibe, Prince nailed it and then some...
@Wscate3 ай бұрын
So much so that Prince didn't put it on the final album because he thought it would bring the whole album down. I would love a rerelease of the Batman album with this ,

@z00ts00t777 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's unfinished at all. It's just a low quality bootleg version that has been leaked, I'd imagine that sitting in the vault is a copy of this exactly as it is with pristine sound that was ready to go on the Batman album before the track was pulled.

Ahh. Thanks for posting. The song that eventually got replaced by Batdance. (As his royal badness felt this 'too dark') This track would have rounded out the album just perfectly, and provided just the right amount of darkness that matched the tone of the movie , whereas Batdance became the track wherein people believed that Prince 'fell off', and the album was his first dip into critical skepticism. How many songs do you know where the chorus kick in so late. Love this shizz.

Perhaps early on in sessions...kinda has 'by a dashboard light' feel. Batman was great work, but I think unless done creatively, (like 'Batdance,') the movie dialogue can take away from overall song. Slightly foreboding, and yes Prince's arc was always leaning to the dark. No surprise the songs of redemption and faith will stand all time. It makes Lovesexy an important juncture artistically, a mature Prince seams together styles of contrast and abstract like no one then or since. True modern pop art.

Chris Redfield i didnt mind either to be honest. There were a cpl songs that were left off of purple rain that i thought should have been included too. But who am i to 2nd guess his royal badness. But this is good stuff. You can tell prince was in quite the inner crisis from the end of sign of the times, thru lovesexy and thru this project. And thats an understatement. Ive heard some pretty creepy and haunting tales around him during that era. The type that will separate you from getting any quality sleep. And still have u thirsty for more. Prince tales never get old.

+Daftendirekt Productions absolutely. Black Album was done in 1987. and thats right in the middle of Sign of The Times and LoveSexy, with the Batman sdtk work right after. Basically it could be any holiday at Prince's house on any given day........Halloween included lol. his former engineer Susan Rogers tells some great tales from her time with him. There is one in particular though....that she told, if you put yourself in her shoes during that story......you might still be losing sleep over it.

Sometimes i cannot understand.Once Prince said he saw an Angel for having this fenomenal career and jet he sing about the greates enemies of angels.To hold tied the devil.Seems like a little bit confused, all this.I don't know.Ok, Prince wasn't a "normal" Person.I see a little bit narcism and egocentrism in his personality.It's very sad an artist like him going away.R.I.P. i hope by the angels naturally.

I think his song is a cautionary tale, not a worship song. A tragic song about spiritual struggle. And apparently even he thought it was too dark and he buried the track.

Dude, it was based on the Joker's line in Tim Burton's Batman, it probably has nothing to do with Prince's personal philosophy. Lol He had pretty strong Christian faith from what I understand from celebrities that met him/knew him.

I didn't like Prince's Batman contributions. I did like Batdance when I was a kid, but now it is an empty lame song. Prince was WAY WAY WAY better than this.
