Loved this reaction, Nick. He was licking his thumb because he cuts it at the beginning of the performance. He threw his guitars like that pretty often so his techs knew to be on standby to catch it. The commenters were asking for this one regularly, and it’s one of my favorites as well so I am happy to oblige the suggestion. As always, thanks for the reaction 💜💜💜

I also love ‘Push & Pull’ LIVE Fukuoka, Japan, November 26th, 2002 but it's just audio. 'Nothing Compare 2 U' live version with Rosie Gaines at Glam Slam in 1992. Dreamer Live in Antwerp 2010, not the best footage but his guitar playing is incendiary! 🔥Musicology Tour, 2004, ‘The question of u/ The one’ and 'Shhh' both from Detroit.... Oh my goodness Nick, I've been waiting for this one for so long. Thank you @JJlovesPrince Totally awesome..this is literally a piece of art. Truly phenomenal guitar playing, vocals and stagecraft. Every time I watch this I get goosebumps. And I have watched it 100's of times as I have it on DVD. My goodness, I wish I’d been there. Really miss this amazing man 😥Epic guitar solos, touching you deep inside your very soul and heart! A performance conveying utter despair, leading into frustration and anger. All emotions visible in this epic performance. He’s almost on another planet, he is so much in “The Zone” here. How he conveys this emotion is unreal. The song was first recorded in 1985 with his band ,the Revolution, after a party for the wedding of Bobby Z (his drummer). It followed an argument with Susannah Melvoin, his girlfriend, at that party. Prince left the party and then called the band in to record. So the original feelings and emotion he put into this song was in 1985 .... 24 years before this performance, yet he manages to channel the same pain! I have watched so many of the biggest rock bands live in concert over the years, yet nobody touches deep in to my soul like Prince. I always say that you don't just listen to Prince .... you literally 'feel' him. That is because he bears his own soul with every performance he gives. He literally left it all 'on the stage'. He's like an angel from Heaven , that GOD shared with us for a while. Regarding him licking his hand, it's because he is bleeding! I have watched this video hundreds of times to see where he cuts it and with my keen eye, I see at around 1.19 that he pulls his hand upward quite sharply and grazes his thumb on the metallic trim on his suit. So for the whole of this song and the other worldly guitar solo, the bridge of his thumb is bleeding. If you watch on a large screen you can see the blood actually dripping. Maybe the sting of the cut even added to the pain on display in this astounding performance? And good grief he looks so gorgeous here at the age of 51! Regarding his guitar, particularly in the 2000s, Prince began customising his Strats. He favoured a setup with EMG pickups at the bridge and neck, entirely removing the middle pickup. He’d also install a Floyd Rose as you thought. See link to his guitars and gear www.gear4music.com/blog/princes-guitars/ He was also a lover of his BOSS pedals. He was like no other, people nowadays don’t even understand. Prince was the Greatest Of All Time, and that is because he as so multi talented and multi faceted. He was just awesome at everything! Sorry for the long comment, I could talk about this amazing human for literally days! 😂

Prince never played a Charvel. That's a Strat with EMG single coils and a Floyd Rose. He never played (regularly) with a whammy bar until around 2004 when he started playing a Strat for the first time. And invariably they had Floyd Rose's. And yes, he did use a Cry Baby throughout his career. He also used a Digitech Whammy.

You can't really see the guitar in the video. Also could have been a Super Strat. I guess you mean a Fender Stratocaster. Fender Strat's are rare with Floyd Rose attached. I saw one that Sambora used to play. Pickups are impossible to see too. I appreciate the info 🤟

Interesting note about this song. There was a movie with Nick Nolte called I'll Do Anything. It was supposed to be a musical comedy and all of the sonfs were written by prince. The cast wasn't really good singers. And the director decided to pull all of the songs and make it a non musical. The songs have been heavily bootlegged, he reworked some of them, he gave one to chaka khan for her album. This song appeared on his live cd, but was never released on a studio album

Yeah it was Susannah Melvoin break-up. We can thank Susannah for some songs Prince wrote about her and their relationship. He got hurt pretty bad and you can see that in the 1987 Sign "☮︎" the Times concert film when he performed 'Forever In My Life' mashed with 'It' Susannah is also the artist of the album ATWIAD
