@@PrincesFriend For everyone: I would have given Prince the advice, give WB a few big hits and they let you release whatever you wanna do. So he could avoid his crash of popularity in the nineties. It hurt him, I saw it, when he promoted EMANCIPATION. WB was needed as editor. Every artist, every company need somebody outstanding to check the quality of the content. Prince also.

The symbol seemed like such a crackpot idea at the time, but in hindsight it's brilliant. In 2019, if you see that symbol it goes straight to your heart and feels magical (you know what it is without uttering a word). It's so sublime and forward thinking, who would have thought of such a thing. No one, just the purple genius. Thanks PF for a good discussion.

Interesting video. Remember first getting into Prince during the time of him changing his name. And remember him commenting at different points on the spiritual aspects of it. Because of my naturally secularized, linear thinking? Found what he was saying in that regard highly internal and lacking coherence. More or less his own inner feelings about himself that we were simply not meant to understand. But in terms of the publicity it brought him? And it being a mechanism to release him from an unjust contract with Warner Brothers? That's always been the primary reason for his name changed I've held in my mind. And my heart. Also another issue that was also perhaps behind his name change was how Prince grew to loath the very idea of contracts. He related them to the chattel slavery of Africans in the Americas. And no longer wanted to participate in any variant of that system. He famously spoke of his last name by saying "My family name is Nelson. I never knew who Nell's son was". It also showed up on different levels later in songs such as "Family Name" and "Colonized Mind". So perhaps Prince's pro black awakening also had to do with his name change on a cultural level.
@PrincesFriend5 жыл бұрын
Prince said a lot of things in his life and I believe each one was very true in the moment. And then you learn and you grow. For instance, he refused contracts and loathed them.... for like 6 years lol. And then he was using them again to make new deals with Arista, and even eventually Warner Bros again down the line. The main takeaway became not “contracts = bad” but “bad contracts = bad” 😂
@melvlnrushll34265 жыл бұрын
Excellent. I always got a kick or laugh when Prince was interviewed on this subject. I mainly thought the move was brilliant and reminded media, the industry(WB), and even us the fam that he was real, independent, and free only to Express himself artistically and spiritually. His geniusness again shined brightly. #MayULive2cTheDawn

Yeah, the main reason seems to be because Prince was under the Warners contract and they were trying to limit his album releases in the '90s so using the symbol was a way to release his music outside of Warners. Prince played it mysterious about the reasons for the name change publicly, revelling in the controversy, but it made him the butt of jokes in the '90s, people thinking it was either just a publicity stunt or he went crazy and having an identity crisis and mid-life crisis or whatever.

Great video. I associated Prince changing his name with Malcolm X changing his second name. Even thought in the Nation of Islam they changed their second name because they didnt know their real second name (usually a slavemaster will let their black slaves to use their second name), i feel like Prince would have done the change because it represent freeing himself from that creative slavery the music industry force the musicians and artists to take and swallow. I mean, like it's not about they share the same reason to change their name, is about they stand by a similar reason (free ourselves from any type of slavery), and their new name represent they are free.

It's good to have a change. Disassociate yourself from the people or parts of yourself that made you unhappy, and focus on a new you, and better you. Great video btw! Very In depth and informative!

so much to learn, but everything you said specifically from this era. Every so often, you need to be able to start fresh, and that's nearly impossible for some celebrities. In this way, Prince gave himself that opportunity.
@ronaldjohnson58365 жыл бұрын
I like the fact that Prince changed his name to something that we couldn't pronounce. Cause that gave him a chance to release new music that Warner Bros would have never been ok with. Plus he gave cd's out at his concert's of new material. And he wrote music nonstop then he had the NPG music which he also released new music. So to me this was a positive move for everybody. Warner Bros got their albums when he was Prince. And the rest of us got new music from him every year.
@PrincesFriend5 жыл бұрын
You’re right, but there’s a bigger picture. Like, he could have changed his name to Steve got the same effect of being able to release other albums and new music. I wanted to explore the other reasons why he may have chosen to do this specifically and there’re a ton of reason, which is the best part of doing this kind of video.

Those are the interesting reasons on why he changed his name. But more interestingly for me was the personal reasons, but I didn’t know that Warner Bros. records just used his name as a main marketing trademark. That’s crazy! It’s like they’re letting prince not have his creativity towards music. It’s his own creativity, why can’t he have that? It’s a good thing that prince parted ways from Warner Bros.for this reason. Warner Bros had wanted to slow down the release of his albums. They felt once a year was too much and they presumably felt if he released a new album every 18 months that they would be appreciated more and sell more. I suppose it's hard to say if commercially it would have been better to do that or not. I can understand him not being happy with being asked to slow down his album releases but I also understand why Warner Bros would have been thinking about the bottom line particularly when they had paid him such a huge advance. What I don't get is that even after he changed his name he still released an album on average about every 12 months after that through Warner Bros so they still put out all those albums. Does that mean that Prince could have kept his name and made albums every 12 months and Warner Bros would have still released them even if they would have prefered he release albums every 12 months instead?

I think Mayte had it the easiest , because that was her husband, she could just say “ Honey can you pass me the salt?” Does she really have to say prince?. 3:50 Tetragrammaton isn't considered God's name, it's the term used for one way of writing it out, as a way to reference God without actually using his name. It's sort of like using the acronym FBI to refer to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Except instead of just calling it an abbreviation, they give the abbreviation a special title-- Tetragrammaton.

How do you sue in the spirit realm where you were raised,and lived a life with ,Prince in,and out of time,before we worked in the night clubs outside of our spirit body,we had to say we loved everyone before stepping into the club to support our children,does he even remember our life we had with him always in my hair,or keeping the phone away so I could sleep from after birthing his spirit child we made after our spirit realm marriege that took place 09-02-1981,Prince I forgot you and our life ,from someone that used my brother's first name to take my spiritual life with you away;So I vowed to do everything to forget him and had two more spirit babies ,and not just the one that has Eyes like Jesus,I forgot you to ease my pain then you go,and write"DREAMER",my memories came crashing back down after a year of listening boy did I do a good job of memory wipe...

Prince stop making albums under his name because the record label owned the rights to his name , that's why he started going by the artist formally known as in order to get copy rights to his later music. He told People he changed his name for other reasons but that was really the only reason .

I have a question for you PF. Why did Prince not allow his music to be played in some TV episodes that requested his songs ? I get some commercials as they are about representing a product . Did he see TV and movies as the same type of the propaganda machine of mass media? Was his music simply his and he felt not to be used for anything other than his truth ? It is a question I've had for a long time. I don't recall him answering this question in detail in any interviews. Maybe it a question for one if your segments ? Sorry if I woke you ! I'm an early riser, not by choice!
@PrincesFriend5 жыл бұрын
Oh my son woke me lol. But as to your question, here’s me guess: the thing about granting permission is that he was always getting requests constantly. And most permissions are just “can I use the song” not “how can I use the song” or “in what context”. And the sheer volume was simply too big to micromanage the use. To me, he likely just said “no” to the whole thing rather than be bothered or distracted from making music. Cheers!
@valalyn13855 жыл бұрын
Prince's Friend You are probably right! To him it probably seemed a waste of his time and the sheer volume might have eaten up his entire days. No one could be the gatekeeper for these decisions but the man himself . To take time to review what context the song would be used in what scene and it's meaning was probably si important to him . I bet he had so many requests that were somewhat repulsive to him . He probably just shut it down all together deeming it a complete waste of his time and energy . Yep , once again I agree with you. 💜🎶💱💜

One of the aspects of P that makes him interesting is that he was beyond confident and completely egotistical in his music and music making, yet personally he was as insecure and immature as a whining baby. We see this dichotomy show up with the silly choice to "change" his name, which of course he never really did, and to try to garner as much attention as he could whist not having any more radio playing his post Purple Rain music (for the most part) nor any real interest paid to him via the music industry (beyond "Kiss" and "You Got the Look"). But as is proven over and over again: those with the biggest egos are also those with the biggest insecurities and therein was his Achilles heel. RIP to an immensely talented yet often too self-critical genius who knew how to layer music tracks like no other yet was foolish enough to self-medicate himself to death.

Do you think part of the journey in Prince learning to embrace his new name with that huge spiritual element about “God’s” actual name being unpronounceable and relating that to his situation was sort of a coping mechanism to take the sting out of him losing the rights to his birth name? I mean once that particular part of his 1992 contract expired in 2000 he didn’t HAVE to go back to using the “Prince” moniker. If that symbol did have such a spiritual meaning and was supposedly such an integral part of his spiritual evolution, why change it back? P.S. My eyes were just drawn to that little stain on your shirt the entire time!😂🤣

Sorry, but I was always told as a Prince fan, that Prince changed his name because "Prince" was owned by the record company. He couldn't produce ANY music under his own name without the record company owning it. So he started this campaign using the symbol to screw over the record company in the hopes to release him.
