The question Prince asked in this song reminds me somewhat of the plot of the Fallout games where people are told to go inside underground vaults (which have some shady intentions which are revealed later ) after a massive global nuclear war happens.

I read everything! I love both of those songs, but I think they might be a little TOO different to actually compare them. One is about environmentalism, and the other is about humanity coming together. Both great songs, but I don't know about that one. Also, people hate MJ vs Prince videos nowadays 🤣

Recording likely exists. I don’t believe it was ever recorded live. Prince was good about letting songs live where they feel right.

Man I was so excited when I received the cassette in the mail. My mom said I had a package from 1-800-New-Funk or NPG Music Club. I opened it and there was a cassette inside that said The War. I said mama Prince sent me a cassette! Lol. Very political song with lots of peaks and valleys. The groove is nasty once it really gets going. I've always loved this song. I don't mind that it's almost 30 minutes long lol. Good review.

I’m thinking this is deep, the cover is “Mother Earth” and the lyrics are biblical and relates to Armageddon and people living underground and the mark of the beast, otherwise known as a “chip”...or in Prince’s case a chocolate chip😆😂

I really loved this song, often listened to it in the sauna (ok, it was hard to get to the end ;) ). I did not like the lyrics very much, this is the one partof his careerIdidn't liked the most, his love to conspiracyand Jehovas Witness for some time.But I ignore it on the wonderful Rainbow Children, I ignor it on the Truth, I ignore it on War. What a musical genuis. My favorite Part is, when his voice is getting harder, taken the rhyme, it is so strong. Greetings from Germany.

@@PrincesFriend I agree, he could write great lyrics and this often ttrough questions. But when it comes to conspiracy, my hairs go a little upwards (if this term fits in english). Nevertheless, he is a master of words, but I lose a little of my emotions I ride on when hearing music because I can't go with the words. But the music catches me back in the saddle. Thank Prince for thy lyrics of Controversy, Little Red Corvette, Darling Nikki, Sometimes it snows in April, Sign O the Times, the Cross, Anna Stesia, Dance on, Eye No, Seven, Papa, Baltimore and so many more I just forgot to mention.

This is a great song musicially, with a great groove. However, let’s be honest. The lyrics are crap. It’s conspiratorial clap trap and I think we should call it what it is. Prince had a tendency towards unfounded conspiracy theories and it’s not something that is mentioned enough. As much as I would love to hear the 45 minute version, if the lyrics are indication, it would be more of the lyrical garbage that was presented. I can only imagine what would have been released if Prince was around during COVID and I don’t mean that in a good way. Then again, we’re not supposed to criticize Prince, are we?

Also, I was one of the people that had my Crystal Ball order messed up. That whole time period was horrendous, with a number of people losing money, not getting product and dealing with an indifferent and sometimes rude staff. He was a great musician but a horrible business person. And that who CB fiasco was a prime example of his lack of business acumen.

It does not lessen the appreciation of his musical talent to acknowledge that there was not only questionable material (conspiracies) but potentially dangerous info at times.
