Not only did Prince produce his music, but he played all the instruments for the track. Interesting tidbit, there's no bass line in this song. A unique feature of music at the time. As for deep tracks from Prince, I'd suggest D. M. S. R., Computer Blue, Get Off, Mountains, or Controversy.

Prince played over 27 instruments to my knowledge. I've been a fan for as long as I can remember. I notice he studies music forwards and backward. This is one of the reasons he is so musicly gifted because he listens to every little detail. I'm also a fan of Michael Jackson. I grew up in a music filled house of different musicians of the 70s, 80s, 90s to the early 2000s. Music now is in a choke hold. Nobody really listens to radio anymore.

Good reaction guys, but you should’ve reacted to the extended version. Prince was always his own producer. This track is from the Purple Rain movie so the video clips are from the movie. This song is 100% Prince including the opening guitar solo. It was originally a lot fuller with more instrumentation but over 2 days he unproduced it and took a lot out and finally took out the bass line. The extended version includes a fabulous keyboard part and also shows more of his insane vocal range. Classic track. Please react to more live performances. This is where he shines the most. His instrumental prowess is second to none. Prince pretty much composed, arranged and produced all his own music and for his first 5 albums played every instrument and sang every vocal. He was a one man army 💜 If you want to go down the Prince rabbit hole prepare yourself for a fabulous but long journey. 40+ studio albums and literally 1000’s of songs. He also wrote hits for many other artists. Wrote for film soundtracks and had several protégés he wrote full albums for. The rabbit hole is very deep indeed. The greatest artist of all time, and that’s no joke 💜

I don't remember who said it but there was a quote that said "Prince was the only guy who could walk into a party in high heeled boots and a frilly blouse, and take your woman home with him." and he did all of his own producing--- everything.

He would finish a song and record it going home at night to write another, hum different instruments into a cassette recorder and come to the studio next morning to produce another record. His engineer Susan Rogers would have the studio set up ready and then only do what Prince gave directions to do. He set up the drum machine first, then the instruments as needed he would play where they were needed. ( can you imagine the skill in doing that.) then he would ask Susan to leave and he always did vocals alone. Then he and Susan finished the recording. Maybe do another record before quitting for the day. His work ethic was incredible. You need to hear Susan Rogers or Peggy McCreary on what working for him was like and how much was expected of them with his work ethic.

By the age of 7, Prince could play 12 different instruments...semi-professionally. Produced the entire song, played all guitar riffs in this song. Strings and some guitar was performed and produced by one of his lead guitarist Wendy Melvoin. But 80% of the whole Purple Rain album....all Prince, literally.

Prince and engineer Susan Rogers made this song in ONE afternoon. Susan said, at the last minute Prince said "Pull out the bass" and then said "people are gonna think I'm crazy". A #1 pop song with no bass line? He did it. He then did it again with "Kiss"....pull out the bass guitar, another #1 hit. The man was not to be fucked with. BTW, this is the short version of the video.

Prince is a genius and icon. One of, if not the most talented pop musician ever. Prince was a multi-faceted musician. He played a ton of instruments and on his earlier albums you could bet he played them for the albums. This is Prince's first album with the Revolution. The talent of the Revolution helped open him up to outside ideas. Prince produced most of his music, rarely bringing in outside producers. He was a control freak and had the sound in his mind for how it should be made. He was a perfectionist. There are so many songs to check out. His catalog is huge. But some worth mentioning - "International Lover", "7", "Girls & Boys", "Mountains", "Batdance", "Controversy", "Anotherloverholeinyohead", "Thieves in the Temple"

As others have mentioned, you should check out the extended version so you can hear the great vocals and keyboard at the end. There are so many deep cuts to listen to. He had sooo many songs. I recommend checking out live performances. Some recommendations are Purple Rain (from 1985 American Music Awards), Nothing Compares 2 U (from Glam Slam), America (live), Shh (from Detroit, Paris, or Hong Kong), The Question of U (from Detroit Musicology tour)… I could keep going, but I’ll stop there for now. Love seeing younger generations exploring Prince. He was the greatest to ever do it!

Prince was involved in all of the production except for anything released after his death. They basically went into his music vault and did their own production of what he had in there. But everything from when Prince was alive was 100% Prince-approved and orchestrated. That doesn't mean he didn't take some things from other people, but he credits when he does. A case can be made for Brown Mark's work with Mazarati on "Kiss" but it was Prince's originally, he just took the song back before they could finish changing it into a rock song, because he had a change of heart. Was it wrong? Yeah, probably, but it was his song after all. Anyway, yes, Prince played guitar at the beginning and all the instruments on the track except where noted. The Revolution would come in and play for the tours. Exceptions are always there like Wendy and Lisa came up with the start of the Purple Rain song, but Prince finished it on his own.

This song will be 40 years old this year and it's still fire. This is the version that usually played on the radio, the album version is two-plus minutes longer (there is a longer version of the video you watched for that version as well). As a lot of people have noted, Prince was the creative force behind his music: writer, producer, played all (or most) of the instruments on his songs in the studio. He was legitimately a musical genius.

He was the first artist who wanted his name on all of his recordings, and not whoeverowned his recordings, he sued to get his music back instead of paying somebody to promote him, but his first for albums. It was only him playing all the music and melted it one on top of each other. That is why he is so phenomenal. Sad day with Prince passed away you also lied to watch purple rain at the halftime show pouring down rain electric guitar. They wanted to know if he wanted to wait to see if it cleared up and he said tell them I wanted to rain harder!

There is no BASE. Music flowed out of him all the time. Apparently 8000 unreleased songs in his vault. You must watch Purple Rain. That movie catapulted him to worldwide fame. If you want to see his guitar skills look at the film of a live concert, song called Bambi, in Japan, 1992, I think in the Tokyo Dome. Also Susan Roger’s was his engineer for five years and her interview about working with Prince will amaze you. Never been anyone like him, never will again.

Prince played all instruments for his first five albums and only got the band when he needed them for touring and public shows. He wrote all his music, apparently 8000 unreleased songs in the vault along with finished albums, films and rehearsals, everything filmed. He produced all his music in the recording studio alone. That is why he built Paisley Park, so he could record whenever 24/7. Try to listen to an engineer called Susan Roger’s, who worked with him for around five years. You will understand how unique he was then. Also watch the movie Purple Rain to really understand the magic of his entertaining.

Definitely check it out..... "Purple Rain" came out in 1984 age 13. That album flipped the script on the music industry. Most importantly is how the album affected Gen-X. In a world of Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, MJ, & groups iike Def Leppard & Metallica - there was the genius who set the standard for creativity, uniqueness, & musicianship. He truly is his own genre.
